Elephant Trunk Hill is an attractive site and a landmark located in Guilin, China. It is a natural rock formation along the junction of the Peach Blossom River.
The hill is located approximately 5 kilometres from the CLI centre. The top of the hill is 200 meters above sea level.
The Elephant Trunk Hill got its name from its natural formation, which looks like an elephant trunk. Other rocks form a figure of an animal’s body and legs.
The hill is surrounded by the Elephant Trunk Hill Park which was officially established as a tourist attraction site in 1986. It is one of the four tourist attraction sites in Guilin.

1. How did the Elephant Trunk Hill come into Being?
The Elephant Trunk Hill has been associated with the legend explanation of how the hill came about with its unique shape.
The myth is about an elephant that resided with the Jade Emperor in heaven. He was considered a celestial ruler of an incarnation God in the theology of China.
One time the emperor decided to visit the earth. When he visited the beautiful Guilin, the elephant got stuck. The emperor was angry at the elephant. He threw a blade at it and turned it into a stone.
The second myth states that the elephant got tired of carrying the emperor. It was nursed back to his health by the villager. As a result of this kindness, the emperor dedicated his life to serving mankind.
2. Elephant Trunk Hill is a Tourist Attraction Site
Elephant Trunk Hill is a very interesting scenic site that attracts huge populations of tourists. The main site is a huge mountain with the figure of an elephant trunk.
It creates very distinctive sites that appear like gods. The beautiful Shuiyue cave is located near the riverside where water passes through appearing like a moon floating on water.
The distance between the trunk and the leg is about one hundred and five. There is a hole of about ten square meters which appears like a floating moon as the water passes through.
3. Love Island Lies Ahead of Elephant Trunk Hill
This is a very attractive island that appears just in front of the Elephant Trunk Hill. Visitors find it very appealing due to the stone statues, winding paths, and other objects that have been dedicated to love.

4. Water – Moon Cave is Found in Elephant Trunk Hill
Water-moon cave is the first feature that is observed by the visitors at the Elephant Trunk Hill. It is formed in between the trunk and the leg.
The cave is about 12 meters high with a circular rock formation. Inside the cave, several songs are inscribed on the wall using Chinese characters.
The river Li passes through the cave and at the night it appears like a full bright moon floating on water creating a romantic site.
The cave has its uniqueness from the mud pit which is knee-deep. It is believed to be very healthy for the skin.
5. Yunfeng Temple is Located on the Foot of Elephant Trunk Hill
This is one of the temples found in the Elephant trunk hill park located at the southwest foot of the hill.
The temple was rebuilt in 1897 and it is one of the four most famous temples in Guilin city. The temple holds most of the cultural relics and history of Guilin accent times.
The temple was used for bringing together the comrades of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. This was a period between 1850 – 1864 and 1911 a revolution led by Dr Sun Yat-Sen.
6. Elephant Truck Hill Hosts the Puxian Pagoda
This is a two-story brick tower that rests on top of the Elephant Trunk Hill. It is 13.6 meters high it looks like a vase from a far distance.
According to the myth, the Puxian Pagoda was the sword that the legend “Jade emperor” threw toward the elephant. It was built to worship Samantabhadra from 1368 to 1644 in Tibetan style.
Puxian Pagoda’s story by the legends is also affirmed by the Buddhists who believe that Samantabhadra shows up with an elephant.
7. The Trunk Hill has an Elephant Eye Rock
This is an oblong-shaped cave that got its name from the right placement of the eye of the elephant hill. It is about 50 meters long, 5-10 meters wide and 2 meters high.
It is a good site where travellers can have a good view of the whole Guilin site. It is used as a highway towards the top of the hill.

The limestone increases the microbial activity in that after the decomposition the soil becomes acidic.
The limestone disintegrates the organic matter producing porous soil which makes the site natural not requiring any artificial inputs.
