Gao was born in Guizhou Jiangxi during the war period in China in early 1940. His original paternal ancestral hometown is in Taizhou, Jiangsu with his maternal roots from Zhejiang. He then settled in Nanjing with his family following the aftermath of World War II.

Gao lived with both his parents. Gao’s father worked at a bank while his mother was a member of the YMCA.His mother was also an actress in anti-Japanese theatre during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

In the year 1962, he graduated from the department of French in Beijing Foreign Studies. After completion, he worked for the Chinese international bookstore.

Gao suffered prosecution because of his creations and was forced to work hard labor at some point in his life. He was sent to Anhui province for six years which was intended to serve as a form of discipline. There he become a teacher and taught Chinese in Gankou Middle School, Ningguo county for a short period.

Gao returned to Beijing after finishing his punishment in 1975. He then became the leader of the French translation for a magazine.
