Mayra Andrade is a musician who was born in Havana, Cuba, to parents from Cape Verde. She and her family returned to Cape Verde a few days after her birth. Hence she spent the first years of her life in Cape Verde.
Additionally, because her father was a diplomat for the Cape Verdean government, she traveled extensively with her family and lived in many countries during her childhood. She is multilingual though most of her songs are influenced by Cape Verde’s Crioulo language, which happens to be her native dialect.
2. Aguinaldo Fonseca
Fonseca was a Cape Verdean poet. He was born in Mindelo, the capital of the island of São Vicente on 22 September 1922. He moved to Lisbon in 1945 and published several poems in Portuguese journals.
Aguinaldo’s publicity began with his first collaboration with the journal Claridade in 1945. Later, he joined the Portuguese review Mundo Literário (World of Literature) published between 1946 and 1948.
He was dubbed the “forgotten poet” even though his creations were published in 1951’s “Linha do Horizonte” collection. About seven years later his works were also featured in the “NotÃcias de Cabo Verde” cultural supplement. Further, his poems made appearances in the Great Soviet Encyclopedia in 1979. He died on 24 January 2014 at the age of 91 in Lisbon, Portugal.
3. Carlos Veiga

Veiga is a Cape Verdean politician. He was Prime Minister of Cape Verde and he unsuccessfully ran for President as the candidate of the Movement for Democracy
(MpD) in 2001 and 2006.
He served as prime minister under President António Mascarenhas Monteiro and resigned in July 2000 to stand as the MpD’s candidate in the February 2001 presidential election. He ran again in the February 2006 presidential election but lost again to Pire.
4. Honório Barreto
He was born in Portuguese Guinea to a Guinean mother and Cape Verdean father João Pereira Barreto, Jr. He was educated in Lisbon. Before the independence of Guinea-Bissau, Barreto was cited by the Portuguese as the most famous governor and an example of what the local population had the potential to achieve.
He was captain major (governor) of Cacheu for three terms, the first between March 30, 1834, to 1835, the second between 1846 and 1848, and the third in 1852.

He is a Cape Verde politician and the third president of the country. He was the head of state from March 2001 to September 2011. Besides, he was prime minister from 1975 to 1991.
6. Sergio Frusoni
Sergio Frusoni was born on August 10, 1901, and died on May 29, 1975. He was a poet and promoter of the Cape Verdean Creole language. He was born in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. He was the son of Italian immigrants Giuseppe Frusoni and Erminia Bonucci.
For several years, he was a chronicler at the radio Barlavento, where he produced the program Mosaico Mindelense in the Crioulo language. He wrote many short stories and poems in the Creole of São Vicent dialect. He died, aged 73, in Lisbon.
Frusoni is well known in Cape Verde, but almost unknown internationally. On June 7, 2005, Cape Verde’s then-President Pedro Pires paid homage to Sergio Frusoni and declared him one of the greatest Crioulo poets.
7. Gualberto Do Rosário
Antóntio Rosário was the Prime Minister of Cape Verde starting July 2000 until February 2001. Moreover, he was the leader of the Movement for Democracy in 2000. The position lasted a few months from July to October of the same year. After his service, he tried his luck for the Municipal Council of St. Vincent as an independent candidate in 2008.
8. Athlete Carlos Almeida

The 2000 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal, was Almeida’s first international appearance representing Cape Verde. He finished 138th in the men’s short race.
Also, he ran the Madrid Marathon for the 25th time managing a personal best timing of 2:25:50. He placed 69th in the 2003 World Championships in Athletics held in Âé¶¹APP where he finished in 2:33:31.
Her other opportunity at the Olympics was the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She made history along with António Zeferino and Henry Andrade by becoming the first athletes to represent the tiny African nation at the Olympic Games.
During the competition, she took part in the women’s 100 meters and finished 52nd in a time of 13.03 seconds. The following year she competed in the 1997 Francophone Games, recording her all-time personal best in the 100 meters with a time of 12.75 seconds.
Thereafter, at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, she was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. In the100 meters race, she finished in 78th place crossing the line in 12.99 seconds.
10. Flávio Furtado
Flávio Furtado was born on 15 March 1978 .He is a Cape Verdean former amateur boxer who competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2005 World Championships.
