To settle the dispute of the Pilgrim zone, the region was then designated a gold mine in 1873. The town expanded fast to roughly 1500 people after the declaration, increasing pollution while in search of alluvial gold.

The Pilgrim’s Rest properties are part of the Transvaal Gold Mining Estates (T.G.M.E. ), which later sold them to Rand Mines.
