Johannes Albertus Morkel was born on 10 June 1981. He is better known as Albie Morkel. Albie is a former South African cricketer. He is an all-rounder who bowls right-arm medium fast and bats left-handed.

He was earmarked as the new Lance Klusener from an early age and is famous for his six-hitting abilities. Currently, he is the assistant coach of the Namibia national cricket team which qualified for the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia on 29th Oct 2019. Morné Morkel is a South African former cricketer who played international cricket between 2006 and 2018. He is a right-arm fast bowler and lower-order left-handed batsman.

Morkel made his Test match debut in 2006 and went on to play 86 Tests for the South African national cricket team. In March 2018, he became the fifth bowler to take 300 Test wickets for South Africa.

He also played in 117 One Day Internationals and 44 Twenty20 International matches, making his debut in both formats in 2007. He played the Legends League Cricket in Oman in January 2022, representing World Giants and was awarded the Legend of the Tournament award.

A first-class match is one of three or more days’ scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by the standard of the competing teams.

Albie’s bowling was quite impressive in his first seasons in first-class cricket. This is because he burst onto the scene with six for 36 for Easterns against Griqualand West, but in the 2004/05 season, he was expected to take more of the bowling effort for the Titans but took only 20 wickets at a bowling average of 40.65.

4. Albie played for Durham County Cricket Club in the 2008 summer season

David Andrew Miller is a South African professional cricketer. He currently plays for KwaZulu-Natal and the South African national team in Limited overs cricket. He is an aggressive left-handed middle-order batsman and an occasional wicketkeeper.

Albie was dropped from the national team for the tour of the West Indies. He opened the door for David Miller and others to join the national team.

6. He joined Derbyshire in 2013

In 2012, Morkel was confirmed as Somerset’s second overseas player alongside Chris Gayle. Roelof van der Merwe was expected to be retained by Somerset but it was expected that a work permit would not be granted.

However, he joined Derbyshire in 2013 as an overseas player for their Friends Life t20 campaign. The T20 Blast, currently named the Vitality Blast for sponsorship reasons, is a professional Twenty20 cricket competition for English and Welsh first-class counties.

7. 2007 was the historic year for the Morkel brothers

Morkel was picked for the Africa squad to play Asia in the 2005 Afro-Asia Cup but withdrew due to injury. He appeared however for Africa in the following series, in 2007

He made history in the second game when he opened the bowling with his brother Morné.To be exclusive, this was the first time two brothers have done so in ODI cricket.

8. Albie secured two-man-of-the-match accolades against Australia in 2009

The secured two-man-of-the-match accolades were from the match against Australia in the Commonwealth Series down under. Therefore, he was promoted to the Test side for the third Test of the home series against Australia in 2008/09, replacing his brother Morné in the side.

Albie played for the Chennai Super Kings since the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League where he had a very successful tournament as an all-rounder. Morkel’s big-hitting abilities and consistent bowling performances have been one of the key reasons that he was chosen to play overseas.

Their daughter Cara Morkel was born on 4 June 2011. The family lives in Pretoria.
