Anna Paquin is a Canadian-born New Zealand actress. When growing up, she aspired to become the Prime Minister of New Zealand or a lawyer before venturing into acting.
She is famous for her role in the television series True Blood. She has managed to keep her life private even after accomplishing so much in her acting career.

1. Anna Worked in a Soup Kitchen While in School
Anna Helene Paquin was born on 24th July 1982 in Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. Her family would later move to New Zealand when she was four years old.
She is the third child of Brian and Mary Paquin, a Canadian high school physical education teacher and an English teacher respectively. She has two elder siblings, Andrew and Katya Paquin.
While in school, she enjoyed gymnastics, cello, piano, viola, ballet, downhill skiing, and swimming. After her parents divorced in 1995, she moved with her mother to Los Angeles.
It is in Los Angeles at Windward School, where she worked in a soup kitchen and at a special education center as part of her school’s community services.
2. She Won Her First Award at the Age of Eleven
Paquin’s sister saw an advertisement in the newspaper for an open audition. They were looking for a little girl who could play the piano to act in the leading role in a film. Her sister went to try out the audition with her friend inspiring Paquin to also audition.
Director Jane Campion was impressed by the nine-year-old’s performance, choosing her out of 5000 candidates, despite having no previous acting experience.
She debuted her acting career playing the role of Flora McGrath in the film The Piano in 1993. Her outstanding performance won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at only 11 years old. She keeps the Oscar in her bedroom closet to keep her friends from commenting about it.
3. Anna Was Not Sure She Wanted to be an Actor
Anna and by extension her parents, had no intention of venturing into acting as a career after her role in The Piano. However, The William Morris Agency had other ideas and kept inviting Anna to audition for roles.
She was consistent in rejecting the offers. She however appeared in three commercials for MCI, a phone operating company, and later made several TV commercials in Winnipeg.
4. She Dropped out of School to Concentrate on Acting
While living in New Zealand, Anna attended Raphael House Rudolf Steiner School in Lower Hutt until she was 9 years old, then went to Hutt Intermediate School.
She proceeded to secondary education in Wellington at Wellington Girls’ College, but would later transfer and complete her high school diploma at Windward School in Los Angeles.
Anna then went to Columbia University but did not graduate because she only studied for one year before dropping out to continue with her acting career.
5. Anna Married Her ‘True Blood’ Co-star
In 2007, Paquin met her husband Stephen Moyer while filming the series True Blood.’ In an interview, Paquin’s husband said, “When we were filming the pilot, we were the only two actors who didn’t live in Los Angeles, so we ended up going to dinner almost every night.”
They dated for a while before announcing their engagement in August of 2009 and tying the knot a year later in Malibu, California.
They have two children, fraternal twins Poppy and Charlie, born in September 2012. She is also a stepmother to Moyer’s two children from previous relationships.
Though married to a man, Anna Paquin Is Bisexual. In one of her tweets on Twitter, she said she’s proud to be a happily married bisexual mother.
6. She Filmed the Fifth Season of True Blood While Pregnant
Anna Paquin filmed the fifth season of True Blood while she was 6 months pregnant with her twins. She worked hard as usual and her pregnancy did not interfere with her work. She did a great job.
After giving birth, she resumed work after only five months. Paquin and her husband chose to keep their children’s names and pictures private for nine months.
7. Anna Gives Back to the Community Through Donations
Paquin is a generous person supporting various charities and foundations such as the Make a Wish Foundation, Elton John AIDS Foundations, The Art of Elysium, and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Paquin also made a bet with a television show host when she shot a basketball through a hoop to donate $10,000 to charity.
8. She Has Won Several Awards Over the Years
Apart from the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress that she won at the age of 11, Anna has won other awards over the years.
She bagged Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Ensemble Performance in 2004, Satellite Award for Best Actress in a series Drama/Genre in 2008, Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama in 2009, Satellite Award for Best Ensemble: Television in 2009.
Some of her recent nominations include Screen Actors Guild Awards-Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries (2007) and Golden Globe-Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series.
Others include Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television (2008), Screen Actors Guild Awards-Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series (2009), Golden Globe-Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama (2010), and Screen Actors Guild Awards-Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (2019).
9. Anna comfortably Acts Nude Scenes in Movies
Paquin had no issue performing nude scenes in ‘The True Blood television series. She is very comfortable in her skin.
In an interview, Paquin said, “I don’t think a naked body is particularly shocking or interesting. It’s not the culture I was raised in.”
She continued to say how Ironic it is that graphic violence on TV with blood all over the place is okay but nakedness, even someone’s nipples, is frowned upon.
During the premiere of the seventh and final season of the popular show, Paquin stated, “Actually, it’s not uncomfortable because we’re all like kind of cozy and friends.”
10. Her Accent Interferes With Her Work at Times
Paquin admitted that she sometimes struggles with her New Zealand accent when filming scenes as her true dialect keeps interfering with her takes.
To reduce this, she avoids chatting with her friends and family before going on set because she thinks it could be part of the problem.
