Through the production of innovative products and services by successful entrepreneurs in Canada, economic growth has been impacted positively. However, these products and services have changed the way people do business in Canada. Indeed, their success has paved way for various activities such creation of job opportunities, investment opportunities, and so many others.

However, not only have these entrepreneurs helped to create wealth and also drive economic growth in Canada but they have helped to build the culture and identity of the country.  Therefore they have become inspirational figures to the younger generation and individuals who have started or want to start their businesses.

1. Jim Balsillie

Jim Balsillie is an entrepreneur and philanthropist from Canada.  He is the former co-CEO of the Canadian technology giant Research in Motion, best known for the BlackBerry mobile device.  However, after he left Blackberry, he preoccupied himself with various roles in Canadian business and society. 

As a philanthropist, Balsillie has contributes to a variety of local and national causes. In addition, he was appointed Chair of Sustainable Development Technology Canada by the Harper government in June 2013. Whereas, in  2021 he was named the sponsor of the $60,000 Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. 

2. Mike Lazaridis

Mike Lazaridis is not only a famous Canadian entrepreneur, and investor in quantum computing technologies, but also the founder of BlackBerry. In 2011 he was ranked by Forbes as the 17th wealthiest Canadian and the 651st in the world.

For his technical achievements, Lazaridis received an Academy Award and an Emmy Award. Jay Baruchel portrays him in the 2023 film BlackBerry.  Also, he received an honorary doctor of engineering degree from the University of Waterloo, and in June 2003, he became its eighth chancellor.

3. Guy Laliberté

Guy Laliberté is a Canadian entrepreneur and businessman best known as the founder of Cirque du Soleil.  After leaving school at the age of 12, Laliberté took various odd jobs before forming the troupe that would become Cirque du Soleil in 1984. He has since become a billionaire and is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Canadian history. Thus in 2006, he was considered the Ernst and Young Canadian Entrepreneur of the year. While the consecutive year 2007 he was named also the Ernst and Young World Entrepreneur of the Year.

4. Garrett Camp

Garrett Camp is not only a Canadian billionaire entrepreneur. He is best known for co-founding the ride-sharing company Uber in 2009 with Travis Kalanick.  Other than that he has managed to help build many companies. Some of which are StumbleUpon and, a web discovery too. However, he is the chairman of Mix and the successor of Stumbleupon.

However, according to  Forbes, Camp’s net worth is estimated to be $2.7 billion as of November 2022. In 2015 he was named as third richest in Canada and 283rd richest in the world by Forbes. In addition, he has received various awards and honors.

5. Jeff Skoll

Jeff Skoll is not only a famous Canadian entrepreneur but also an engineer and a film producer. He is the founder of eBay and the Skoll Foundation. Moreover, is also an active philanthropist, and his efforts have helped many organizations and projects around the world. Skoll was ranked by Forbes as the 7th wealthiest Canadian and 134th in the United States, with an estimated net worth of US$4 billion as of December 2016.

However, he became a minority owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment in November 2022. It owns the NHL’s 2018 Champion Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NBA G League’s Capital City Go-Go, the WNBA’s 2019 Champion Washington Mystics, and the NBA 2K League’s 2020 & 2021 Champion Wizard District Gaming. Monumental Sports also owns Washington, D.C.’s Capital One Arena, NBC Sports Washington, and manages the MedStar Capitals Iceplex and George Mason University’s EagleBank Arena. 

6. David Cheriton

David Cheriton is a lot of things other than being a businessman. He is not only a billionaire businessman and philanthropist but also a computer scientist, mathematician, and venture capitalist. Even though he has founded and invested in various technology companies, David currently serves as a computer science professor at Stanford University.  Moreover, Cheriton is popular for being an expert in distributed computing and computer networking. Further, as a philanthropist, he has contributed most of his donations to educational purposes. While, in 2021, he was ranked by Forbes with an estimated net worth of $8.8 billion.

7. Frank Stronach

Frank Stronach is not an Austrian and Canadian businessman t also a politician. At the age 14of  Frank left school and started s career as a tool and die-maker. However, he is the founder of Maof gna International. Moreover, Stronach enjoys football as well. From 1999 to 2005, he was the primary sponsor of FK Austria Vienna. However, he, later on, founded the Frank Stronach Football Academy in Hollabrunn to train and educate adolescent players. But the academy closed in 2009.

8. Prem Watsa

Prem Watsa is a Canadian businessman and investor who serves as chairman of BlackBerry Limited. He is popular for being a savvy investor. Watsa has made numerous successful investments in Canadian companies.

 His philanthropic effort has been noticed by many because he donated millions of dollars to charities and various causes. Therefore he is referred to as the “Warren Buffett of Canada”  due to his successful investment strategies.

9. Edward Rogers

Edward Samuel Rogers III  is not only the chairman of Rogers Communications and a Canadian businessman. But also the chairman of the Rogers Control Trust.  However, Rogers was removed as chairman of Rogers Communications Inc in 2021 and later on was reinstated as chairman by order of the British Columbia Supreme Court.  Moreover, he has received numerous awards for his business acumen and philanthropic activities.

10. Ryan Holmes

Ryan Holmes is a Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and investor. He is most famous for founding Hootsuite, a social media management platform, in 2008. He is also the founder of Invoke Media, a venture capital firm specializing in digital media, and he sits on the boards of several companies.

 He is a strong advocate of corporate social responsibility and is actively involved in several philanthropic initiatives. In 2009 Globe and Mail named him as one of the “Top 40 under 40” business leaders in Canada, additional he is one of Canada’s Most Admired CEOs by the National Post in 2012.
