Windsor sculpture park was formerly known as the Odette Sculpture Park. The park is located on the shore of the Detroit River. It has been spanning from Assumption Park to Centennial Park.

The Windsor Sculpture Park is a museum without walls. This is because it is located in an open space on the shore of the Detroit River. It is between the Ambassador Bridge and the Art Gallery of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

2. A free public guided tours are offered in the park

The City of Windsor provides free public guided tours of the five-kilometer open-air gallery. Well, the tours are done in a vehicle called the Art Cart. For those who usually play golf, am sure you have experienced rides in these kinds of electric golf cart vehicles.

The vehicle maximumly ferries only up to five people or less. The tours in the park follow the rule of a first come first serve basis. If you visit the museum, the electric golf carts are usually parked at the base of the Great Canadian Flag at Ouellette Avenue.

3. The sculpture park was funded by the Odette family and Group

Miss and Mr. Louis Odette and the P & L Odette Foundation funded the Windsor Sculpture Park. Loui Odette was a great admirer of the arts. He provided support to numerous artists. Because of his love for art, he offered together with his wife and the P & L foundation to fund the establishment of Windsor Sculpture Park.

Their fund served as the initial fund for starting the park and also maintaining the park. Louis also founded the Toronto sculpture park. Thus, we can conclude that the park was formerly named after Louis as The Odette Sculpture Park, because of his fund to create the park.

Tembo is a large bronze sculpture located in Windsor Sculpture Park. The sculpture was created by Derrick Stephan Hudson. It features a mother elephant and two young babies. Every year, the citizens of Windsor are invited to participate in washing the tempo hence the name Tempo Day.

The citizens in the festival use clean warm water and soap to bathe the sculpture using toothbrushes. Waxing is done by sculpture assistants in order to protect the sculpture during the winter season.

The goal of tempo day is to create a better understanding for people to know the importance of maintaining and preserving bronze sculptures in the park. Tempo day is recognized by Windsor, for engaging the community in its activities. It also has been featured in the Windsor Star and CBC Windsor.

Did you know that Windsor Sculpture Park is jointly managed? Well, the park is maintained by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. The Sculptures on the other side are cared for and maintained by the Cultural Affairs Department.

A regular maintenance program was started in 2015 as a result of the RFP issued in 2012. The program was to evaluate all of the sculpture pieces both for insurance appraisal reasons. Also, it was to ensure all pieces are maintained correctly for the length of their lifespan.

Windsor Sculpture Park is part of a project funded by The City of Windsor’s Arts, Culture & Heritage (ACHF). The park receives financial assistance because it provides exciting, surprising, and meaningful opportunities that strengthen the creative community of Windsor. Funding is administered by ACHF twice a year.
