Green Gables Heritage Place is farm and landmark in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is recognized as a Federal Historic Building by the government of Canada. Green Gables was used as settings for Ann Green Gables.

Green Gables constructed by the MacNeil family during the 1830s. They were the relatives of Montgomery, who was born nearby the homestead. The property grew in the decades after Montgomery published her novels which resulted to government of Canada buying the Green Gables in 1936. It was further developed to Prince Edward Island National Park.

The farm house became famous after the publication of Anne of Green Gables. It served As the home of character Anne Shirley. The home grew after Ann of Green Gable released a movie based on the novels. After the home was vacated in 1930 the government of  Canada purchased and made some development on the farm house

Montgomery published Anne of Green Gables1908 and Green Gables acted as the home for the titular character Anne Shirley. The home grew after the publication of Anne of Green Gables and the release of a movie based on the novels in 1934. 

The novel is about the adventures of Ann Shirley an 11 years old orphan girl who was sent by mistake to two middle aged siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. They originally wanted to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island. Anne make a way through life with the Cuthbert’s

2.Green Gables is a 1+1⁄2-storey L-shaped home

The home was furnished with period-appropriate furniture and was used as a historic house in 1950s.And in 1970 the building was refurnished and remodeled to resemble the Green Gables as portrayed in Montgomery’s novels.

Green Gables is a storey L-shaped home clad in white-painted everywhere. It is the the only other color present on the building being the green-gabled rooftop and its window shutters.

The building has six windows on the two floors of the building each with shutters. The 220-square-metre-building including the five bedrooms, a dining room, sewing room, and a parlor. The wood was used throughout the home and the building’s chimneys are made of brick.

Green Gables served as a served as the home for Montgomery who was the author of Anne of Green Gables. The Site consist of the ruins of her home and other farm buildings.

Where’s the Green Gables is situated to the west of Montgomery’s home. The lands surrounding Green Gables also included of historic schoolhouse, farm buildings, and trails.

Also an interpretive Centre was built north of Green Gables in 2019. It was opened to the public, and houses exhibitions on Montgomery and her novels, particularly Anne of Green Gables.

After the government of Canada purchased the Green Gables in 1936. It initially operated as a historic house that depicted 19th century farming life on Prince Edward Island.

5. The Green Gables acts as Montgomery novel museum

James Campbell who opened their home to the public as the Anne of Green Gables Museum in 1972. He dedicated the museum to the author Lucy Maud Montgomery. The Museum is full of many of Montgomery’s hand-developed photographs, that allow you to see the world through the author’s eyes. It is also completed with a collection of her books she autographed for the Campbell family.

Visitors enter the Museum through the old kitchen. The actual Blue Chest from the Story Girl was featured in the kitchen. It was Montgomery’s favorite book to write since it was all based on true stories.

Prince Edward Island is Canada’s most rural province. It is Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Prince Edward Island is a land of charming rural communities, rolling hills, and great seafood. The island is the setting for Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s who is world-famous novel.

The island has a unique feature which is the lighthouse that provide fantastic views over the island and its red shores by climbing to the top of a lighthouse.

7. Enjoy the green gables golf course

In 1938, plans were made to develop Green Gables into a clubhouse for the adjacent golf course. Green Gables Golf Club is 18 Holes of Championship It is located Cavendish’s National Park. The golf course offers both public play and seasonal memberships. Green Gables GC has provided many golf memories for generations in Prince Edward Island since 1939.

Green Gables provides fantastic historic views of Anne of Green Gables House, Cavendish Beach Dunes, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The surrounding views aren’t overshadow by this amazing golf product. It is a Par 72 6874 yard design offers four different tee decks to accommodate golfers of all skill levels.

8. Green Gables was owned by Lucy Maud Montgomery relatives

The farm house was originally owned by David and Margaret MacNeil  cousins of Montgomery’s grandfather. It was built in several sections in the 1830s and 1870s.

Montgomery came to know the area by living in proximity with her grandparents, and exploring the nearby wooded areas which she would later call as ‘Lover’s Lane’ and the ‘Haunted Wood’. She became close friends with Myrtle, David and Margaret’ niece.

In 1905 Myrtle married Ernest Webb, with the ceremony being conducted by Montgomery’s future husband Reverend Ewan MacDonald. Myrtle and Ernest ran the farmhouse and took care of David and Margaret until they passed in 1914 and 1924.

9. The restoration of Green Gable costed the Government 9.5 millions

The government unveiled the plan to restore the green gables building into interpretive Centre would cost them 9.5 million in 2017.Later 2020  the interpretive Centre was built in the north of green gables homestead. The centre  was opened to the public with Hisako, princess Takamado.

10. The Green Gables was  designated as a federal Heritage building

 Green Gable was officially  selected as a Federal Heritage building in 1985. It was an example of architecture in the 19th century in the province. Also the home was important to literary community. Later on 2004 it was designated as  the  L.M. Montgomery’s  Cavendish Historic site of Canada
