Carly Rae Jepsen is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist and actress who skyrocketed into fame with the success of her single “Call Me Maybe” in 2012.

Carly Rae’s single ‘Call Me Maybe’ was acknowledged to be a path-breaking song worldwide. This song ruled the chart busters in dozens of countries for a long period of time.

Jepsen was born in Mission, British Columbia, to Alexandra Lanzarotta and Larry Jepsen. As a child, her father would sing three songs before bed instead of the traditional book reading.  

Her parents loved listening to music and jamming out. She explained, “I just grew up in a family where every celebration or party would end in a big jam session. “Moondance” by Van Morrison always resulted in a late-night dance party.”

She further added, “My mom would sit me down with a half-glass of wine and a Leonard Cohen song and ask me what the song was about. I wanted to be a part of that world.”

From the age of 7 years old, Jespen has always wanted to perform. While attending Heritage Park Secondary School, she pursued her passion for musical theatre by appearing in student productions of Annie, Grease, and The Wiz. She played the respective lead roles of Annie, Sandy Olsson and Dorothy Gale.

She auditioned for the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, British Columbia. Carly was one of 25 female students to gain admission into its year-long program: “It was very clear to me after that school, as much fun as I had, I really did want to pursue more of a purely musical career rather than acting and all the dancing.”

In 2007 Carly was convinced to audition for Canadian Idol by her drama teacher. For the audition in, she sang her original song “Sweet Talker”. All four judges voted “yes”, sending her to the next round.

She advanced round by round while singing songs such as “Georgia on My Mind” by Ray Charles, “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia, “Chuck E.’s In Love” by Rickie Lee Jones, “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” by Ella Fitzgerald and “At Seventeen” by Janis Ian. She finished the season in third place.

Carly was also a part of the Canadian Idol Top 3 concert tour. At the end of the Idol tour, she was signed by Fontana and MapleMusic. After this, she devoted all her time in the preparation of her first album with producer Ryan Stewart.

Jepsen parents and stepparents were teachers, so Jepsen considered a career in music instruction as a second option. This is before she attended Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, British Columbia.

Fortunately, once attending the school, she caught the songwriting bug and has never looked back ever since.

5. The happiest time in her life

After graduating, Jepsen relocated to Vancouver’s west side, and worked at Trees Organic Coffee as a barista and pastry chef assistant. She was able to start its open mic night.

Jepsen describes this as “the happiest time in her life”; she slept on a pull-out sofa, wrote songs in her downtime with a guitar her parents gave her, and “performed multiple nights a week at musician-friendly holes in the wall”

Carly Rae Jepsen revealed in an interview that she likes being in the kitchen baking. She credits this t her stepparents, who are both Italian and installed in her the love of cooking.

She was able to improve her cooking skills while she worked as a pastry chef assistance at the Trees Organic Coffee.

In between shows and being on the road, she always finds time to cook up new concoctions in the kitchen.

Carly’s single was greatly praised by Justin Bieber, who tweeted, “Call me maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen is possibly the catchiest song I’ve ever heard.” He went on to upload a wacky video to YouTube of him lip-synching the song with then-girlfriend Selena Gomez, that it began to gain international attention.

In early February 2012, Jepsen signed a deal with Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, and his School Boy Records. Scooter Braun, told Rolling Stone, “He’s [Justin Bieber] never jumped out and promoted an artist like this.”

On 4 February 2014, Jepsen made her Broadway debut at New York City’s Broadway Theatre. She was offered the lead role in the renewed version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella’, a role she played to near perfection.

Reviews of her performance ranged from “serviceable” and “so-so” to one that praised her “impressive vocals.” Variety reported that her debut “helped drive up the show’s box office by 25 per cent vs. the prior week.”

In 2016, she played Frenchy in Grease Live, Fox’s critically acclaimed live television presentation of the musical Grease. During the performance, she sang a new song written specifically for her called “All I Need Is An Angel.”

10. Unlikely celebrity starred in Carly’s music video

The award-winning actor, Tom Hanks, known for movies like Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, and The Da Vinci Code, took on an easygoing character for the “I Really Like You” video.

In the video, Hanks started his day in his home and then hit the streets to say hello to neighbors and sign a ping pong paddle. He hopped in a taxi to meet up with the “I Really Like You” singer, even sending some emojis in the process.

After Hanks and Jepsen finally met up, the two danced in the streets for the music video. They were even joined by the “As Long As You Love Me” singer, Justin Bieber.
