Wayne Douglas Gretzky is a Canadian former professional ice hockey layer and former head coach. He was born on 26 January 1961in Brantford Ontario, Canada. He is the son of Phyllis Leon and Walter Gretzky, a Canadian Philanthropist. 

Wayne played 20seasons in the National Hockey League for four teams from 1979 to 199. He retired in 1999 and was inducted immediately into the Hockey Hall of Fame hence, he was the most recent player to have the waiting period waived. 1. He was nicknamed the Greatest one

He is the greatest hockey player as called by many sportswriters, players, the NHL itself, and the Hockey News. He is the leading goal scorer, assist producer, and point scorer in the history of the NHL. His number of assists is more than the total points scored by any other NHL player.

He is the only NHL player with over 200 points in one season, a legacy he set four times. At the end of his retirement from the NHL, he held 61 NHL records: 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records, and 6 All-Star records.

2. He received the most special retirement

Not only was Gretzky inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame with his waiting period waived but also, the NHL retired his jersey number 99 league-wide. He was the only player to receive the honor.

He was then voted to the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Central All-Star Team, among other five players.

3. He won a gold medal as a coach during the 2002 Winter Olympics

During the 2002 Winter Olympics which officially is called the XIX Olympic Winter Games also, Gretzky became the executive director for the Canadian national men’s hockey team. 

 The International multi-sport event took place in and around Salt Lake City, Utah, United States hence the tournament is commonly known as Salt Lake 2002. Gretzky team won a gold medal.

4. His father taught him hockey

Walter Gretzky had built a backyard rink nicknamed the ” Wally Coliseum” for his children. He taught and coached him from age three, devising creative exercises and drills, and giving tips to play successfully.

5. He played at age six for a game of high ranks

While he was six, Gretzky played a game composed for 10-year-olds. He was credited with remarks from his first coach, Dick Martin for handling the puck better that the ten-year-olds. ” Gretzky is so good that you could have a boy of your own who was a tremendous hockey player, and he’d get overlooked because of what Gretzky is doing,” Dick Martin remarked.

6. Wayne displayed his old habits of dressing during games

The sweaters for ten-year-olds were far too large for Gretzky. He coped by tucking into his pants on the right side. Despite the fact that he gained height, Wayne continued tucking his sweaters throughout his NFL career.

7. He received a negative attitude when he played for Brantford

Wayne was a classic prodigy whose skills made him the target of jealous parents. His play attracted considerable negative energy from other players, and he was often booed.

According to Walter, the “capper” was being booed on ” Brantford day” at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens, a historic building located a the northwest corner of Calton Street and Church Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in February 1975 during ice hockey games.

The negative energy caused unnecessary pressure on the then 14 year years old Gretzky with over 1000 goals. His parents arranged for him to move and play hockey in Toronto, where he could partly further his career and partly evade the pressures of the negative energy.

8. Gretzky received the Hart Memorial Trophy

It was in his first season of 1979-80 when Gretzky was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the Most Valuable Player, an honor typically bestowed upon an individual as the most performing player in the entire league. 

Gretzky was the first of eight in a row and tied for the scoring lead with Marcel Dionne, a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre player who played in the NHL for 18 seasons for Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles. The two had a tie of 137 points.

9. He was named Order of Canada

Gretzky was named an officer of the Order of Canada on 25 June 1984. It took 13 years and 7 months-and two Governors-General before he could accept the honor since the Order ceremonies are always held during the hockey season.

He received a promotion to Companion of the Order of Canada in 2009 for his continued contributions to the world of hockey, principally as the Greatest player of all times, as well as his social commitment as a philanthropist, a volunteer, and a role model for upcoming hockey players.

10. Gretzky played for Los Angeles Kings

 Oilers intended to sell Gretzky at the end of the season the Stanley cup but did not alert him early. His father though had known for months having been tipped off by Skalbania but he kept the news from him so as he could be upset. 

Actually, Gretzky was initially not willing to leave Edmonton. Bruce McNall, owner of the Los Angeles Kings called him while he was on his honeymoon so that they could discuss the conditions of the contract.

The Kings named Gretzky their alternate captain after he joined the club. He scored a goal on his first shot in the first regular season. Because of Gretzky, a marked increase in attendance and fan interest increased. The kings boasted of numerous sellouts.

Gretzky is truly a hockey legend ever lived because no one has broken his stage records from the time he started playing hockey at six years. Though his size and strength were unimpressive, he is widely considered the smartest player in the history of hockey. His reading of the game and his ability to improvise on the fly was unrivaled. His moves were very timely and well anticipated and so he was able to make good choices with the puck.
