Shawn Mendes is a famous pop artist who rose to fame in 2013. Ever since he has been living in the spotlight and the public eye. His full name is Shawn Peter Raul Mendes.
Many seem to believe he is American but apparently, he is not. He is Canadian, his mother, Karen, is from England, and his father, Manuel, has a Portuguese heritage.
Shawn was born on 8 August 1998 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Apart from being musically and vocally talented and the fact that he is 6’2’’(1.87meters) tall. The following is a list of ten interesting facts about Shawn Mendes.
1. Started His Career on Vine
Vine was launched on January 24, 2013. It pretty quickly gathered speed, becoming a stage for posting and scrolling through all sorts and genres of videos. It was during this time Shawn did a cover of Adele’s “Hometown Glory” and posted it on Vine.
He became a megastar overnight through a three-minute video. According to MTV, he accumulated half a billion loops. By 2014 Mendes had a million followers and around 400,000 Twitter followers. At this point, he was only about 15 years old.

Handwritten is a studio album by songwriter Shawn Mendes, which was released on April 14, 2015, by Island. The album ranked at the top of the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 106000 pure album sales.
Mendes became the tenth artist to chart I the US Billboard 200 under the age of eighteen. The album contains some of his famous hits such as “Stitches”. Even though the song “life of the party” (his leading single) was released on 25 June 2014, it serves as the first single on the album.
His second single was “Something Big”, released on November 7, 2014, and was his first official music video. His third was “Stitches” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was a revised edition of the album.
3. He Has Had Some Acting Roles
Many know Shawn Mendes as the cloud-pleasing musician with an arsenal of love songs to give unimaginable feels. But it turns out the artist is also an actor. Shawn revealed that as a kid, his dream was of becoming a well-renowned actor.
He took acting classes and auditioned for Disney. It was then that he realized how nervous he got with remembering lines. Despite his nervousness in remembering the acting lines, he has some acting roles under his name. He played Macallan on “The 100” and a vocal part in “Underdogs” in 2015.

Everyone needs inspiration to keep living up or striving to reach their goal. The same situation befalls Mendes, he looks up to other artists for inspiration. Shawn admitted to not only looking up to Ed Sheeran but also listening to his music.
Mendes is greatly inspired by Ed to the point of flying him out to Los Angeles for a bonding dinner when Sheeran discovered his inspiration role in Shawn’s life.

Everyone knows how tiresome it is to learn something through recorded tutorials. You have to get accustomed to pausing to keep up their pace.
The tutorials also don’t offer any feedback, therefore the is no communication if the tutorial was helpful. Despite all the challenges, Shawn is pleased with the fact that he was self-taught on guitar playing. It’s marvelous because by then he was 13 years old.
6. He Is an Award-Winning Artist
Living under the spotlight has made Shawn win lots of awards and nominations on his career journey. For his young age, he has accomplished a lot.
To top his award cabinet are five major awards. In 2017 he received American Music Award for Favorite Artist-Adult Contemporary. In 2018 he also received an American Music Award for Favorite Artist-Adult Contemporary.
2019 was his favorite year. He received; the American Music Awards for collaboration of the year “Senorita”, MTV Video awards for best collaboration, and MTV Video Music Awards for Best Cinematography. Teen Choice Awards and People’s Choice are other accolades in his cabinet.
7. A Big Harry Potter Fan
Shawn Mendes has always been a big fan of Harry Potter since he was a young kid. He has been a fan for as much as he used to think he was a wizard. If you are wondering, Shawn Mendes is a Gryffindor. Just so you know, Hermione (Emma Watson) was his childhood crush.
8. Shawn Mendes Made Portugal’s 2018 World Cup Song
It is customary for national teams to release official world cup songs before the world cup commences. Shawn had already set his sight on the task. Shawn remixed his single “In My Blood” and included some Portuguese lyrics for the amazing big event.
His song was selected as the official Portugal World Cup Team song in the 2018 World Cup Tournament. It’s amazing because Shawn is a Canadian by nationality but never hid his emotional connection with his father’s country of origin.
Shawn went on to explain that “In My Blood” is about a point in his life he almost gave up on everything but did not.
9. He Can’t Eat Tomatoes
Mendes has a strong disdain for tomatoes. His face is full of disgust as he takes a bite of tomato. Shawn clarified that the rumor of him hating ladybugs is certainly a misconception but the fact that he dislikes tomatoes is true.
Mendes seems to believe that tomatoes are unhealthy. He has even taken to Twitter to show how he detests tomatoes. “Tomatoes ruin everything” he posted in one of his tweets back in 2014.
10. He Is Open About His Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety is caused by inner conflict and can be resolved with some self-reflection. Shawn had been affected by the anxiety to the point he could not sing anymore.
He admitted that it affected him so much that the thought of quitting music almost crossed his mind. It was his willingness not to quit that made him get through all this. He had started getting it out on other people, for example, his relationship.
To get through this he started meditating and journaling. He started setting boundaries and being accountable for his mindset and mental health. He also stayed in touch with his emotions.
Shawn first opened up about his situation with his song “In My Blood”. He said that all pain was temporary and the issue was anxiety and how it is difficult for those who do not understand it. He added that anxiety may last indefinitely.
The purpose of his song was that no matter the period it lasts, you will always come out the other end stronger.
