Nina Dobrev is an actress who was born in Sofia and raised in Toronto. She rose to prominence for her roles in Degrassi: The Next Generation (the season with Drake) and The Vampire Diaries.
Before that, she made her film debut in minor roles. She went on to star in several feature films, including the 2012 coming-of-age drama :

Nina Dobrev visited Kenya with some of her ‘Degrassi: Next Generation’ co-stars in 2001. They were raising funds for the non-profit organization Free the Children. During their visit, the group assisted in the construction of a school for Kenyan schoolchildren. Dobrev was still supporting this cause many years later, as she is seen wearing a top promoting their work at the end of her 2008 film ‘The American Mall.’
2. Nina participated in rhythmic gymnastics
Nina used to be a competitive gymnast as a child. She competed in both the traditional gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics. She competed for Canada in Aesthetic Group Gymnastics.
Furthermore, she competed in both the Senior World Championships in Denmark and the Junior World Championships in the Czech Republic in 2005. She eventually had to choose between training for the Olympics and becoming an actress.
3. She’s a total adrenaline junkie
Nina loves doing things that make her nervous. She was terrified of sharks at one point. She’s now swum with sharks a few times and is a shark advocate. Furthermore, she has participated in Oceana campaigns to protect sharks from the deadly fin trade.

Dobrev was born on January 9, 1989, in Sofia, Bulgaria, to computer specialist Kamen Dobrev and artist Michaela Dobreva. She has an older sibling. Her family moved to Canada when she was two years old, and she was raised in Scarborough, Toronto. At the age of ten, she returned to Bulgaria with her mother for two years.
Nikolina Constantinova Dobreva is her given name. Her maternal grandmother inspired her name. Her stage name isn’t too dissimilar to her given name. Nina Dobrev is, if anything, an Americanized version of Nikolina Dobreva.
6. Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley apparently didn’t get along at first

The chemistry between Stefan and Elena on the show is palpable, but the two weren’t fans when the cameras were off. Nina and Paul didn’t get along at the start of the show. Everyone thought they had great chemistry because they respected each other. This was the case for the first five months. They eventually got along and are now very good friends.

Nina had to inform the crew of the set she was working on that she needed to use the restroom and proceeded to do so. She delivered her audition performance via Skype from the restroom. She must have impressed them despite the unusual circumstances because she was cast in the role.
