Jacques Joseph Charles Villeneuve, born April 9, 1971, is a professional auto racing driver and amateur musician from Canada. Villeneuve became only the third driver after Mario Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi to win the 1995 CART Championship, the 1995 Indianapolis 500, and the 1997 Formula One World Championship. No other Canadian had won the Indianapolis 500 or the Formula One Drivers’ Championship as of 2017.

Villeneuve was the son of Canadian race car driver Gilles Villeneuve and the nephew of Jacques Villeneuve. He spent much of his early life with his parents on the racetrack, first in North America and then in Europe.

His father became successful in Formula One (F1) Grand Prix racing and relocated the family from Quebec to Monaco in 1978; regrettably, Gilles was killed in a racing accident four years later. Villeneuve joined a Swiss boarding school for six years before deciding to become a race car driver.

He joined the Williams team in Formula One in 1996. His big break was nothing short of spectacular, as he became only the second Formula One driver in history to win both the pole and the podium in his first race. He led the race until an engine issue caused by an earlier off-track incident forced him to slow and settle for second place behind teammate Damon Hill.

That year, he won four races, reached the podium 11 times, and finished with 78 points, all rookie records that still stand today. He finished the year with 10 poles, 8 podiums, and 81 points, clinching the title in dramatic fashion by defeating Ferrari rival Michael Schumacher in the final tournament.
