Howard Michael Mandel is a Canadian comedian, television personality, screenwriter, actor, producer, director, entrepreneur, game show host and author. Mandel was born on 29th November 1955 in the Willow dale area of North York, Ontario.

Howard is of Jewish descent, and his ancestors emigrated from Romania and Poland. The father of Howard was a lighting manufacturer and real estate agent.

He is a distant cousin of Israel violinist Itzhak Perlman. Howard attended William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute where he was expelled and started working as a carpet salesman.

He, later on, became a stand-up comedian before he deeply ventured into the comedy scenes on screens. Howard has been among the successful TV personalities across the world for his amazing deeds of making people laugh.

1. Howard was Expelled from School for Impersonating a School Official

Howard Mandel was attending the William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute where he had secured a chance. However, his comedy and funny stunts made him lose his chance at school.

Howard was later on expelled from the school for impersonating a school official. The impersonation was followed by hiring a construction company to build an addition to the school which was not meant to.

After his expulsion from William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute, Howard Mandel went ahead to work as a carpet salesman.

2. Howard became a Stand-Up Comedian at 23 and Received Several Bookings

In September 1978 at the age of 23, Howard Mandel became a stand-up comedian at Yuk Yuks in Toronto. He had received a week’s long booking as a featured act known as “a wild and crazy borderline psychotic.”

While on this week-long booking, his repertoire was based on placing a latex glove over his head. He inflated the latex glove by blowing through his nose making the fingers of the glove extend like a cockscomb.

Howard’s trademark response to the audience’s reaction was to extend his arms palms up and look incredulous and say that “it’s you.”

3. Howard became More Popular after His Trip to Los Angeles through Brilliant Performances

While on his trip to Los Angeles, Howard Mandel performed at the Comedy Store and got hired as a regular performer. Later on the producer of the show “Make Me Laugh” saw him and booked him for several appearances in 1979 and 1980.

He was also booked to open for David Letterman at the shoes in the summer of 1979 through his brilliant acts. The performances of Howard Mandel attracted more top producers as CBC-TV’s head immediately signed him for a TV special.

In 1980, Howard Mandel won the lead role in the Canadian movie Gas. He, later on, became the first Vee-Jays to appear on Nickelodeon’s music video series Pop-Clips.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Howard Mandel was not only a comedian but also featured in several movies. In 1984, Howard provided the voice of Gizmo in the hit movie Gremlins and its 1990 sequel.

Howard made a brief cameo in the movie directed by Michael J. Fox known as the Iceman Hummeth in 1985. This movie was later on broadcasted on Late Night with David Letterman in November of the same year.

In 1986, Howard Mandel also starred in the film A Fine Mess alongside Ted Danson which was a great movie.

5. Howard gave up on his Signature Stunt after getting Diagnosed with Perforated Sinus

In his stand-up comedy, Howard Mandel had the signature stunt that got him, several spectators. His signature stunt was of him stretching a latex glove over his head and inflating it using his nostrils.

This signature stunt got him on the cover photo of his comedy album Fits Like a Glove in 1986. However, his routine signature stunt came to a halt after a doctor’s advice.

The doctor ordered Howard Mandel to stop the stunt after he was diagnosed with a perforated sinus.

6. Howard was Named Host of the US version of the Deal or No Deal Program

In the early 2000s, Howard Mandel was a regular figure on the television screens as he got several roles in various programs. In October 2005, Howard was named as the host of the US version of the Deal or No Deal program.

This program debuted on 19th December 2005 on NBC. He also hosts Deal or No Deal Canada which originated from Toronto and debuted in January 2007 on Global.

This debut made him one of the few hosts of both a domestic and international version of the Deal or No Deal game show.

7. Howard’s Debut on America’s Got Talent Popular Show

As he continued making it on TV shows, Howard Mandel was appointed to America’s Got Talent show. In January 2010, Howard was announced as the replacement of David Hasselhoff.
Howard was appointed as one of the judges on NBC’s show, America’s Got Talent. He is currently the longest-tenured judge on the show as he has been on it for thirteen consecutive seasons.

8. Howard to Become Judge on Canada’s Got Talent Show

As America’s Got Talent show became more popular, other nations also followed suit and began their shows too. Canada’s Got Talent Show was also premiered and is set to have its second season.
In October 2021, Howard Mandel was among those selected to be a judge on the second season of Canada’s Got Talent which premiered in 2022.

9. Howard has a Podcast Co-Hosted with his Daughter

In February 2021, Howard Mandel hosted the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast which is so entertaining. His daughter, Jackelyn Shultz is the co-host of this podcast.
The two received praise from Apple Podcasts which previewed them in a statement that stated: “Together, these two make prank calls, discuss pop culture, interview interesting people…”

10. Howard is Colour Blind and Contracted Covid-19

Mandel came out and openly stated that he has always been colour blind. In the 2022 Kids’ Choice Awards, Howard Mandel contracted Covid-19.
This made him miss the last third of the third episode of the 17th season of ICA’s Got Talent show. The d-19 affected Howard as it made him struggle physically and mentally.
