Jim Carrey, full name James Eugene Carrey, is a Canadian-American comedian who became successful as a prominent comic actor with his amazing performances.
Carrey grew up in and around Toronto. At age eight he began making faces before a mirror and discovered a talent for doing impressions.
The man with the rubber face and bigger-than-life grin began clowning for his classmates early but left school in grade nine because of financial difficulties in the family.
After leaving school in 1978 to help support his family, Carrey worked for two years as a janitor in a factory.
He made his professional debut as a stand-up comedian in a Toronto club at age 15 and by 1979 he was able to make a living as a comedian.
He wrote most of his own material as an opening act for such comics as Buddy Hackett and Rodney Dangerfield.
Known for his racing energy level and frenetic improvisation, he had a comic appeal that was mainly visual.

1. Jim Carrey is Canadian

Jim Carrey is one of the most prolific comedic actors of his generation. He is of French-Canadian, Scottish and Irish extraction.
While Jim Carrey’s career certainly took off in Hollywood, leading some to believe that he had been there all along, he is originally from a suburb in the Greater Toronto Area called Newmarket.
Although he has lived most of his adult life in the US Jim retained his Canadian citizenship as a means of honouring his Canadian roots and as a reminder of who he is.
He was added to the Canadian Walk of Fame.
Jim Carrey represents Canadians across the country and makes them extremely proud.
2. Jim Carrey holds the Record for Most MTV Movie Awards

Despite having not yet earned an Oscar nomination, Carrey holds the record for most MTV Movie Awards victories, with 11 under his belt.
He’s also the only actor in history to win Golden Globes in both the Musical/Comedy and Drama categories.
In addition to his 11 wins, Carrey has another 12 MTV Movie Award nominations. His most recent victory came in 2009 when he was honoured for Best Comedic Performance for Yes Man.
He has won the awards since the station began awarding them in 1992.
He accepted the Best Male Performance award for his role in The Truman Show in character disguised as a stoned-out hippie with long grungy hair, sunglasses and a thick beard
Carrey began by singing a variation on Eric Clapton’s “Let It Grow,” then said that, after being snubbed by the Oscars for his acclaimed performance in The Truman Show, he was now going to embrace his true self.

Even as a child, Jim Carrey performed all the time for his family and friends, basically for anyone who would watch.
In junior high, he performed stand-up routines for his classmates at the end of each class. He loved acting so much.
He was so ambitious that he even mailed his resume to The Carol Burnett Show when he was 10.
The comedy/variety show was loved by Americans who tuned in every week to watch Carol Burnett and her comedy troupe.
Although he only got a form letter reply he was still thrilled and it didn’t stop him from becoming one of the highest-paid comedy actors of all time.
4. Jim Carrey Auditioned for Saturday Night Live twice

Jim Carrey really tried hard at getting on SNL, as he auditioned twice and was turned down both times!
The famously mysterious and ambiguous casting process requires a final stamp of approval from the show’s creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels.
Typically, those auditioning go through a sort of performance on Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
Then follows a meeting with Michaels, rumoured to be a personality test to make sure the future cast members can survive the rigorous hours and pressures of the fast-paced environment of live television.
However, once he became the biggest star in Hollywood in the ’90s, he made it to the show as host.
5. Jim Carrey Worked as a Stand-up Comedian

Before quitting school, Carrey attended Agincourt Collegiate Institute.
Afterwards, he started working as a stand-up comedian in Yuk Yuk’s comedy club chain in Toronto. His supportive father would drive him to the club where he performs once a week.
Aside from that work, Jim continued working in a factory to financially help his family.
The teenage Jim Carrey did not have a perfect start as a stand-up comedian.
He recalls being booed off by crowds, which gave him personal doubts about his skills as a professional entertainer. However, the young Jim Carrey persevered and developed a more polished act and this time it was a success.
By 1979, Jim finally was able to make a living as a comedian.
6. Jim Carrey and Renée Zellweger met on set and Became an Item

Carrey was engaged to his “Me, Myself and Irene” (2000) co-star Renée Zellweger from 1999 to 2000.
After his second divorce, Carrey moved on with Zellweger, with whom he worked on 2000’s Me, Myself and Irene.
The duo were briefly engaged but never made it down the aisle.
Jim Carrey still has very fond memories of his short-lived romance with Renée Zellweger.
Nearly two decades after he and Zellweger called it quits, Carrey confessed that he considered her “the great love of [his] life.”
Zellweger, for her part, previously reflected on her “unexpected” connection with the Memoirs and Misinformation writer.
7. Jim Carrey has one Child
He did find ever-lasting love from his first marriage when he welcomed his one and only daughter into the world.
Jane Erin Carrey is the only child of Jim Carrey. She was born on September 6, 1987, in Los Angeles, California, United States and is a singer-songwriter.
Aside from her brief stint on American Idol, she has a band called The Jane Carrey band which released a self-titled album in 2009.
Their song “Sticky Situation” appeared in her father’s film Dumb & Dumber To’s soundtrack.
She currently has a child of her own named Jackson Riley Santana.

8. Tupac Shakur and Jim Carrey were Good Friends

Jim Carrey is the favourite comedian of the late American rapper and actor, Tupac Shakur.
During Shakur’s imprisonment in 1995, Jim and Shakur became pen pals and Jim was constantly sending Tupac funny letters to cheer him up.
It was Carrey, who allegedly reached out to Tupac while he was inside on multiple occasions.
During this isolating time, he became a close confidante, and the two grew close.
The letters were humorous and intended to offer the rapper a slice of light relief while he was locked up.
Unfortunately, Tupac was fatally shot and died in 1996, less than a year after he got out of prison, much to Carrey’s regret.
9. Jim Carrey was Featured on a Postage Stamp
In 2014, Carrey was one of several comedians to grace a special limited-edition set of postage stamps issued by the Canada Post.

The Canadian post office has issued a special set of stamps celebrating the “Great Canadian Comedians” and Jim Carrey was one of the five
The others were, Mike Myers, Catherine O’Hara, Olivier Guimond and Martin Short.

10. Jim Carrey Rolls Out His First Children’s Book
Jim Carrey may be best known as a movie star and comedian, but to him, his most meaningful roles are that of father to Jane and grandfather to her son, Jackson.
In 2013, Carrey released How Roland Rolls, a children’s book about an ocean wave named Roland who frets about the consequences of finally hitting the beach and whether that could mean the end of his existence.
Carrey wrote the book and drew the concept art; the book was illustrated by artist Rob Nason.
Carrey says his book is about understanding the “oneness of all life” through the metaphor of Roland, who realizes that he is part of the ocean and not simply a wave that’s separate from it.
“I want the book to alleviate children’s fears about loss and what would happen to them if they were left alone,”
Jim Carrey made headlines recently for implying that he might quit acting soon.
While it might be surprising to some, the comedian has been entertaining the masses for over three decades, so the idea of his retirement from the film industry isn’t too far-fetched.
