Top 10 Cameroonian Football (Soccer) Players of All Time


 

The Republic of Cameroon which is located in Central Africa is a country that has produced talented soccer players for several years. Top-quality footballers who have played in various leagues in Europe originated from Cameroon.

The country has been taking part in the World Cup as it has been ranked among the top African countries in soccer. Cameroon has appeared in the finals of the FIFA World Cup on eight occasions.

The first time they participated in the World Cup was in 1982 when they drew in all three group games and finished 17th. In 1990, Cameroon reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup before being defeated by England in a 3-2 thriller. Cameroon produced the oldest player to ever play in the World Cup finals at the 1994 tournament.

Roger Milla, who was the oldest at the age of 42 managed to score too. His review was broken in 2014 but he remains the oldest scorer in the World Cup. In total, Cameroon has participated in eight World Cup tournaments with 2022 being included.

1. Samuel Eto’o

Eto’o is regarded as the best Cameroonian player of all time because of his impressive career in the top European clubs. He played for top clubs in Italy, England and Spain before he retired from professional soccer.

Samuel began his soccer career at the age of 16 at Real Madrid. However, the lack of game time made his move to other lower teams where he gained experience and became a top player.

A versatile poacher for goals on the pitch, Samuel Eto’o was one of the best players from Africa during his spell with Barcelona. He scored one hundred and eight goals for Barcelona during his five years spell. Samuel won three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, three Champions Leagues, one Serie A, two Coppa Italias and one FIFA World Club Cup.

Eto’o won two trebles during his career in which he scored 350 goals for both club and national teams. The former Chelsea star man was named African Footballer of the Year four times and finished third for the Ballon d’Or in 2005.

2. Roger Miller

Born on 20th May 1952, Roger Miller is considered to be among the top soccer players from Cameroon. He is a former professional footballer who played as a forward.

Miller was among the first African players to be major stars on the international stage. He played in three World Cups for the Cameroon national team.

In the 1994 FIFA World Cup tournament, Roger Miller made history by becoming the oldest soccer player to feature in the tournament at the age of 42. He also holds the record for being the oldest soccer player to score in a FIFA World Cup match.

3. Thomas N’Kono

Thomas is a former soccer player who operated as a goalkeeper during his playing days. He is one of the greatest goalkeepers in Africa. Thomas was mainly associated with the Spanish club Espanyol.

He represented the Spanish club for almost a decade he made more than three hundred official appearances. His reflexes and speed to catch up with the ball were one of his major strengths.

Thomas N’Kono played a major role in influencing the career of one of the greatest Italian players. He influenced Gianluigi Buffon to become a goalkeeper. Thomas appeared for Cameroon in three World Cups with the most notable being in the 90s.

4. Rigobert Song Bahanag

Rigobert is a former professional footballer who played as a right-back or a centre-back. He was a naturally skilled athlete and soccer player who was so versatile during his playtime.

Rigobert who is the Uncle of legendary player Song played in France, Italy, England and Turkish leagues. He was the captain of the Cameroon national team with 137 appearances.

He holds the record for the most-capped Cameroonian player. Rigobert Song also represented his national team in four World Cups, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010. He is set to lead the national team as the Head coach in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

5. Marc-Vivien Foe

Marc-Vivien was a professional Cameroonian soccer player. He used to play as a defensive player for both his club and country. Marc-Vivien had great success in France and England after impressive performances in the 1994 World Cup with the Cameroonian national team.

He was a very versatile defensive midfielder who controlled the midfield area and did all the rough work for his team. However, he collapsed and passed on during an international match due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

6. Alex Song

Alexandre Dimitri Song Billong is a Cameroonian footballer who currently plays for Djiboutian side Arta/Solar7 as a central or defensive midfielder. The song is also able to play as a central defender a trait that not all soccer players can achieve.

He was previously a utility player before becoming an integral part of the Arsenal team for several seasons. His aggressiveness and versatility to support in the attack made him a top player who later moved to Barcelona.

Song represented the Cameroon national team in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. He took part in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations but might not feature in the 2022 World Cup.

7. Geremi Sorelle

Geremi is a former Cameroonian soccer player who was able to play at the right back, right midfield or defensive midfielder positions. He is widely known for his intense power, pace, combative style and agility in taking accurate free-kicks.

Geremi represented Cameroon in seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments which he won in 2000 and 2002. He also represented his country in the 2002 and 2010 World Cups.

8. Andre Zambo Anguissa

The 26 years old plays as a defensive midfielder for Serie A side Napoli football club. He has been an integral part of the Napoli team that is shining in the current season.

As a top player, Anguissa links up the defence and attacking perfectly as he joins the strings with a perfect cross and reaches his teammates. He also has that magical final touch of scoring beautiful goals.

9. Joe Matip

Joe Matip is a towering defender who plays for Liverpool football club. He has represented only two senior soccer clubs since he signed his professional contract.

Matip is a technically gifted player who defends well as well as has the perfect ability to spot his teammate as they play low-lying opponents. He has won several awards including the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool. Joe Matip represented Cameroon in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup before his retirement.

10. Karl Toko Ekambi

Karl Louis Brilliant Toko Ekambi is a professional soccer player who plays for French Ligue 1 club Lyon. His career has spanned around France and Spain.

What makes Toko Ekambi a perfect player is his dribbling ability, taking on his opponents, pace, power and agility that are a combination of a modern-day attacker. He represented Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017, 2019 and 2021 with the hopes of playing in the 2022 World Cup.
