Best Places to Ride your Bike in Budapest

Budapest has become more and more bicycle-friendly over the past ten years, which has led to an increase in the number of people using two-wheels as their main form of transportation. This is largely a result of increasing infrastructure investment, with a network of bike lanes making it relatively simple for cyclists to navigate the city making cycling in Budapest a practical substitute for driving or taking public transportation. The bike is a great way to see Budapest and the surrounding areas in addition to being used for commuting. As you might expect, there are several riding places in and around Budapest.

A bike ride along the Donau will wake you up in the morning. The most scenic bike path in Budapest, with a fantastic perspective of Castle hill, House of Parliament, Chain bridge, and Danube bank of Pest is the freshly created bike route that follows the river from the south to the north of the city, between Rakoczi bridge and Arpad bridge. Several memorials and monuments honoring young people who died in World War II and its aftermath may be seen in front of the parliament. You get a breathtaking view of all of this at night with the lights on.

2. Széchenyi Baths

Hungary’s tradition of using thermal baths dates back more than two thousand years, so if you’re visiting Budapest for the first time, you really must visit the spa. Budapest has gained the moniker “City of Spas” thanks to the more than 100 thermal springs that run beneath the city and filter more than 70 million liters of water daily. Although there are nine thermal spas, Széchenyi Baths are the most well-known. There are 18 pools total, 3 larger outside pools, and 15 smaller pools dispersed among the numerous rooms. You can have a great bike ride on your way there since it is close to a lovely park.

4. Római embankment/Szentendre

A popular day trip from Budapest is to Szentendre, a small town 25 kilometers north of the capital with Serbian churches and galleries. Bicyclists should ideally be able to ride along the river all the way there, but this is now difficult due to construction that is going on en route. Ride your bike up to the picturesque Római embankment (Római fürd), have a satisfying drink there, and then take the HÉV train (which allows bikes) up to Szentendre. This is the most social alternative. You may get to either the Pest side of town by taking the Váci funicular up from Nyugati station and then crossing the railroad bridge for a breathtaking view of the surroundings or the Buda side by using the bike route that follows the Danube. That only goes as far as the rpád Bridge, after which you’ll have to fight traffic until you reach the Római embankment, where you’ll find a slew of reasonably priced outdoor bars and buffets.

It takes 25 minutes to go on the HÉV from Rómaifürd to Szentendre, to do so, you must either acquire a cycling pass or validate two tickets, one for you and one for your bike. Once the cycling path is navigable again from Szentendre, you can leave to discover the lush marvels of Leányfalu, Tahiti, and Szentendre Island.

It’s such a beautiful place to go for a long stroll, jog, or even ride a bicycle (can be hired in the park). Discover a developed infrastructure with a castle, lakes, playgrounds, and even a beer garden, as well as lush, tree-lined paths. If you’re traveling on your own, you can ascend Andrássy Avenue, enter the park through the lavish Heroes’ Square, and then navigate your way to the Széchenyi Baths. You can easily stop by a museum, en route the Museum of Fine Arts is close to Heroes’ Square and Vajdahunyad Castle is home to an agricultural museum.

6. Népsziget

One of the best off-the-beaten-path spots to cycle is Népsziget, also known as People’s Island. The island is far less populous than Margaret Island since it is full of dilapidated houses, which gives it a very different atmosphere. Visitors are allowed to bicycle freely, and lángos and hekk, as well as fried dough and fish, are available during the summer at bars and cafés. If you feel like doing something other than riding your bike during your trip, there is even equestrian riding and a goat farm.

7. Margaret Island

Margaret Island (Margitsziget), which has a dedicated station on the congested tram route 4/6, is easily reachable from either Buda or Pest. Its numerous tree-lined walks and walkways put on a stunning show of red, orange, yellow, and crimson in the autumn. The remnants of a Dominican convent constructed in the 13th century are still visible, and the island was once utilized as a hunting ground in the Middle Ages. The Musical Fountain and the Palatinus Baths are also included on the sightseeing map.

You may catch the cog train via the circular Budapest Hotel starting at Széll Kálmán tér. It has a separate section for bicycles, so you’ll need to purchase and validate an additional transportation ticket. After arriving at János Hill, you take the Children’s Railway to its terminus before traveling to Normafa for refreshments and relaxation. In the Sház, there is a café/restaurant and a number of buffets. Although it’s a tough climb, you can get to Budapest’s highest point, the Elizabeth Lookout Tower, from here. On the way back, it is safe to drive down to Budakeszi, where the wildlife park is interesting to visit. From here, returning to the indicated intersection of Budakeszi and Hvösvölgyi streets is pretty simple, making it easy to ride a bicycle to Széll Kálmán tér.

After leaving the city and traveling north, you can reach the scenic town of Hvösvölgy in the Buda Hills and continue riding through lush vegetation to the lookout point of Hármashatárhegy, where gliders land. Head toward the intersection of Budakeszi and Hvösvölgyi streets on the Szilágyi Erzsébet utca from Széll Kálmán tér. You can take a break at a buffet or restaurant there before continuing on the hiking track through the forest to the glider airstrip. Although this stretch is more suitable for off-road riding, you shouldn’t anticipate any particularly unsafe sections; instead, focus on avoiding quiet strolling groups and any potentially hazardous climbs. The woodland also has clearings that are ideal for picnics and relaxation stops.
