Rivaldo’s full names are Rivaldo Vitor Borba Ferreira, a former Brazilian footballer. He played mostly as an attacking midfielder and also as a second striker, wide midfielder and winger.

He is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and among the most skillful and creative players of his generation

1. Rivaldo Had a Poor Upbringing

Rivaldo was born on April 19, 1972 in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. He had a poor upbringing in the Favelas of the city. His physical appearance was altered by the poverty he experienced in his childhood.

During his childhood, he was malnourished, which caused bow-leggedness and the loss of several teeth. Rivaldo is also left-footed.

He began his professional football career at the age of 16 when he was signed with Paulistano Futebol Clube in 1889. However, Paulistano’s coaches believed him to be physically weak to succeed.

His dad died in a road accident in 1989, but Rivaldo signed his first professional contract later that year.

2. Rivaldo Used to play for Brazil National Team

He started playing for the Brazil national team in 1993 when he played in a friendly match against Mexico, scoring the only goal.

In 1996 he represented Brazil at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the team won a bronze medal. Unfortunately, Rivaldo was not selected for the third-place playoff. He became the center of criticism when Brazil didn’t win a tournament ever since the 1996 Olympics.

He participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where he scored three goals. The zenith and nadir of Rivaldo’s national team career came at the 2002 FIFA World Cup hosted in South Korea and Japan.

Rivaldo participated in many games representing his national team. Rivaldo played his last game on November 19, 2003, in Curitiba in a 3-3 draw with Uruguay. He was substituted for Luis Fabiano in the 79th minute.

He scored his last goal at the national team in a penalty spot in a 1-1 draw with Peru. While on the national team, he won 74 caps and scored 35 goals.

3. Rivaldo was Well Renowned for his Style of Playing

He was a skillful, critical and creative player. Rivaldo was known for his dribbling ability, feinting, close ball control and balance. Despite his height, he used to move quickly.

Rivaldo bending free kicks and penalty taking made him one of the greatest players and his ability to score a goal from a distance with powerful strikes. He is left-footed but he passed excellent playing techniques.

 He mainly played as an attacking midfielder and a second striker; on some occasions, he was deployed as a wide midfielder or as a winger.

Former Dutch international Ruud Gullit believed that Rivaldo’s ability and qualities were often underrated as he played in the same space as Brazilian counterparts Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.

In 1989 he was signed with Paulistano Futebol Clube. He joined Santa Cruz in 1991 and moved south to the state of Sao Paulo in 1992, where he played for the Mogi Mirim in the second tier of Brazilian football.

In 1993 he moved to play for Corinthians in the first division on loan. In 1994 he switched local allegiances and moved to Palmeiras.

5. Rivaldo played in Many Different Clubs From 1996

Rivaldo has played for many clubs; in 1996, he played for Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga, moved to Barcelona in 1997, and Milan in 2002. In 2004 he joined Cruzeiro the same year, he joined Olympiacos; in 2007, he joined AEK Athens.

In 2008 Rivaldo joined Bunyodkor. He returned to Mogi Mirim in 2010; in 2011, he joined Sao Paulo, in 2012, he joined Kabuscorp and in 2013, he joined Sao Caetano and Mogi Mirim.

6. He was the Highest Goal scorer in Barcelona

Rivaldo played in Barcelona for five years. He scored 135 goals ranking him among Barcelona’s highest goal scorers.

7. He is the Father of Rivaldinho

Rivaldinho Is a Brazilian professional footballer like his father. He plays as a forward for the Romanian club Universitatea Craiova which he joined on July 26, 2022, after signing a two-year contract.

On July 14, 2015, his son played in the same match for the first time in a game for Mogi Mirim and Macae. During the game, they both scored a goal.

8. He Received Many Honours Throughout His Career

Rivaldo’s football career was successful, and he was awarded many honours he can boast of. In 1999 he won the Ballon d’Or and was named FIFA World Player of the year.

In 2009 he was named Uzbek League top goal scorer, UEFA Champions League top goal scorer (1999-2000), and in 2004 he was named by Pele in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players, among many other honours.

9. Rivaldo Retired in 2014

The Brazilian icon officially retired from football in March 2014 after a successful career of 24 years. However, he decided to remain the president of Mogi Mirim to help run the club and look after his son Rivaldinho.

In a released statement, Rivaldo stated, “My history as a player has come to an end. With tears in my eyes today, I would like to thank God, my family and all the support the affection that I received during those 24 years as a player”.

However, Rivaldo returned to the team in June 2015 and on July 14, 2015, Rivaldo and Rivaldinho played in the same game, scoring goals in the same match for the first time as Mog Mirim beat Macae 3-1.

On January 18, 2019, SCC Mohammedia announced Rivaldo as their new technical director and coach for the following season. Rivaldo signed a pre-contract in which the club must achieve promotion from National (third tier in the Moroccan league.

10. Rivaldo Has Been Married Twice

Rivaldo first got married in 1993 to Rose Ferreira, and they got two children, a son Rivaldinho and a daughter Thamires. They divorced in 2003 after the wife accused him of cheating.

He later married Eliza Kaminski Ferreira, who is a fitness freak. Rivaldo appointed her as the vice-president of his football club named Mogi Mirim.

Rivaldo and Eliza have four kids two sons; Joao Vitor Ferreira and Isaque Ferreira” and two daughters named Thamirys Borba Ferreira and Rebeca Ferreira. In 2017 his son Rivalidnho had a son named Davy making a grandfather.
