The Black Forest National Park which is known as National park Schwarzwald is a famous national park in the state of Baden Wurttemberg in the Southwestern part of Germany. The park was created on 1st January 2014.

The Black Forest National Park is the first national park in the region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. On 28th November 2013, the state Parliament voted for the establishment of the Black Forest National Park.

However, there was a lot of political controversy during the establishment of the Black Forest National Park. The Baden-Württemberg’s opposition parties, CDU and FDP opposed the establishment of this national park.

Other than the opposition parties, the timber industry and some of the affected population were also against the establishment of the Black Forest. The SPD and Greens, conservation associations and some of the Northern Black Forest population supported its creation.

The Black Forest National Park is located in the Southwest area of Germany. It largely stretches from the High Rhine near the Swiss city of Basel in the south to the Kraichgau region to the north.

Black Forest National Park covers a huge area of land across the region it is located. It covers an area of ten thousand and sixty-two hectares.

Two thousand four hundred and forty-seven hectares are located within High Ochsenkopf. The seven thousand six hundred and fifteen hectares are around Ruhestein. These areas are separated by the Forbach parish of Hundsbach.

2. The National Park is home to Germany’s Highest Mountain

Some parts of Germany are hilly, but the Black Forest National Park is home to one of the highest mountains. The forest shares the same structure as the famous mountain range known as the Vosges. These regions were separated by the Rhine Valleys which were formed between them.

In the southern region of the Black Forest National Park is the highest mountain. It is known as Feldberg.

The Feldberg is 1,493 metres above sea level. This mountain has a rich history other than being the highest mountain in Germany outside the Alps.

It is home to a popular skiing resort in Germany with several hotels and resorts located here which attract winter sports enthusiasts. The first of the 14 ski lifts in Germany were built here.

3. Black Forest National Park is Surrounded by Famous Cities

The national park is located within the borders of Baden-Württemberg. Other than Baden-Württemberg, Black Forest National Park is also surrounded by some great German cities.

The biggest cities that are located at the boundaries of Black Forest National Park include Pforzheim, Baden-Baden, and Freiburg. Other than the German cities, the forest is surrounded by Basel in Switzerland to the south, Karlsruhe in the north and Stuttgart in the northeast. The French city of Strasbourg is also located to the west.

4. The Towering Cathedral of Strasbourg can be Viewed from the Black Forest within the Park

The Black Forest National Park also provides a view of some major landmarks outside Germany. One of the most famous landmarks that can be spotted from Black Forest National Park is the Strasbourg Cathedral.

When at the western slopes of Black Forest, the Cathedral can be seen towering over the landscape. The Strasbourg Cathedral was constructed in 1015 and completed by the 15th century.

5. Black Forest National Park is Divided into Three Zones

The Black Forest National Park is divided into three sections or zones. These zones are the Core zone, Development zone and Management zone. The Core Zone is highly protected and interventions for nature are not intended.

Three-quarters of the total area of the Black Forest National Park belongs to this zone. The visitors are not allowed to go through the marked paths.

In the Development zone, there is more transition taking place to allow the forest to cope with human support. The last zone, the Management zone is a quarter of the total area of the Black Forest National Park.

6. Black Forest National Park Soil is Acidic and doesn’t Accommodate More Plants

The Park has mixed spruce, fir and beech forest. The soil in the Black Forest National Park is not rich in nutrients and is acidic.

It accommodates highly specialised plants and fungus species that can survive here. Ferns and mosses particularly grow here in large numbers.

7. The Park is Home to Special Species of Animals and Birds

Black Forest National Park is home to several species of animals. Deer families and rare mammals such as pine marten, garden dormouse and several types of bats live in the park.

Countless species of birds including three-toed woodpeckers, rough-owl, pygmy owls, ring owls, jays and capercaillie live in this park.

8. Black Forest National Park has Several Scenic Places to Tour

Other than the good view of animals, the Black Forest National Park also has several beautiful scenic places to tour. One of them is the Roschenschanze which once had a military facility.

This area consists of heaped earth walls which once served as a means of warding off enemies. Nature took over the military buildings and made them a beautiful landscape.

The All Saints monastery ruins are the other beautiful area to tour. They are made out of red sandstone. This monastery was struck by lightning and burned down. There is a large waterfall from the Black Forest which plunges in 83 metres fall.

There are three beautiful adventure trails in the Black Forest National Park. These trails include the Lothar path, the Lynx trail and the Wilderness path.

They cover several kilometres where visitors can roam around and enjoy their adventures. Nature and some wild animals can be observed during an adventure through the three trails.
