The Romantic Road is also known as Romantische Strabe by the Germans is a theme route which was devised by promotion-minded travel agents in the 1950s. Romantic Road describes the 460 km of surface roads that stretch between Wurzburg and Fussen, South Germany.

It is brilliantly described in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg as it also links picturesque towns and castles. In the 1950s, the Romantic Road was a trade route that connected the centre of Germany with the North side.

Current days, this area is unique and attracts international travellers with the quintessentially German scenery and culture. The cities and towns located in this stretch include Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Castles located along the Romantic Road include Burg Harburg and the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. The Romantic Road has attracted several tourists to the region which has boosted the economy in these cities.

1. Romantic Road Early Visitors were Friends and Families of American Soldiers in Bavaria

Established in the 1950s, the Romantic Road was not meant for tourists and visitors from around the world to view the sceneries on the way. The road came up as an idea of Germany for scenic reasons from River Main to the Alps but also for another purpose.

There was an urge of bringing some bit of post-war positivity with the Romantic Road. It had to serve the purpose of easy navigation of friends and families of American soldiers.

These soldiers were stationed in the large bases of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. It worked out very perfect in bringing more peace.

2. Romantic Road is 480 Kilometres which Attracts more than Five Million Visitors

The Romantic Road is always a very impressive place to visit and enjoy the beautiful scenes and views. It is four hundred and sixty kilometres of surface road that covers between Wurzburg and Fussen in Southern Germany.

This Castle is known as the real-life inspiration for Disney’s film, Sleeping Beauty Palace. The Palace is located up on the hills and sets the fairy-tale tone during the ride. The castle gates and spires are a huge attraction to tourists who can take photos and interact with residents of this area.

4. Walled Roman Catholic Complex, Fuggerei along Romantic Road

Other than the Neuschwanstein Castle along the Romantic Road, there is also an old housing complex that was built by the Roman Catholics. The old house of Fuggerei is located along the Romantic Road.

This building complex was built in the early 1500s by Jakob Fugger. It was purposely for the poor who were housed here.

The Fuggerei building that attracts tourists along Romantic Road still serves as subsidized housing. Previously, the Fuggerei was Bombed during World War Two which set up the mini museum’s setting in a bunker.

The Romantic Road is full of historic sightings to enjoy the views while on the tour. There are several old houses which attract people who visit this area.

There is the Alt-Rothenburer Handwerkerhaus which is a fun detour. This is a 700 years old house that was used by artisans in the past.

At the Alt-Rothenburer Handwerkerhaus was a workshop that contained coopers, weavers, cobblers and potters. This looks like a film set theme park which attracts tourists who frequent here.

Along the Romantic Road is many fun activities which engage viewing and taking lots of photos. However, the tourists also have a more fun time enjoying local delicacies and wine.

During the ride out to Wurzburg which is located outside Frankfurt, tourists and visitors enjoy impressive wine at the Residenz. This is an 18th-century Baroque palace along this stretch. Visitors also enjoy meals of asparagus, filet mignon and more local delicacies at Burgerspital restaurant.

People usually take the Romantic Road to be literally as its name ‘Romantic’ insinuates. This road is more typical of the roads in the United States.

There are twenty-eight stopovers along the Romantic Road which are full of fun and amazing time. 9. There’s a Super Interesting Town Located in Crater along Romantic Road

The many towns and cities along Romantic Road include a town known as Nördlingen. This is a town located in a large meteor crater.

There is a distinct circle outline of this town which is spectacular to those who are keen on observing. Visitors can walk the whole length of the battlements of the walls. The only German town where visitors can do this. There is a gothic cathedral, St Georg Dom.
