The Minsk Sea is an artificially created reservoir that is located to the north of the capital city. A popular Belarus tourist spot among locals and foreign tourists.

1. Minsk Sea is an artificial Water Reservoir

The Minsk Sea is an artificial water reservoir that was created in 1956 in the place of a swampy floodplain to reduce floods in the city of Minsk, and also create additional recreation for the city residents.

Today, the Reservoir is the second largest artificial reservoir in Belarus, with a length of more than 9 kilometers. It is 4.5 kilometers wide and covers an area of about 27 square kilometers.

On the coast of the Minsk Sea, there are about 10 beaches with clean sand surrounded by woods and swamps. The beaches are well maintained, with each having its own free public toilet, locker rooms, parking lots, cafes, and restaurants.

A lot of sports activities and entertainment happen along the beaches, which keeps visitors happy and entertained.

Visitors can enjoy beach volleyball, ride water bikes, and yachts in the Minsk Sea, learn how to windsurf or take a boat or boat trip.  For Water lovers, an opportunity is provided to ride a catamaran or a jet ski

There are many good sandy beaches by the sea with excellent infrastructure: dry closets, changing rooms, and showers are organized. There are sun loungers, as well as places for fires and barbecue grills, etc. Around the beaches, there is a centuries-old pine forest.

It is interesting that large straw palm trees were created around by local craftsmen so that vacationers would have the impression that they are actually on the sea, which is not in Belarus.

There is also a nudist beach where some people sunbathe and swim naked although it is against the law and serious fines are imposed on the offenders. Nevertheless, nudists still cherish this beach as a place for self-expression.

The Minsk Sea is the main place where people go to enjoy water activities and boat rides in Belarus. There are many modern yacht clubs, where one can go sailing, learn to sail or take part in other various water activities.

Minsk Sea is a great place where both locals and tourists enjoy recreational fishing. The activity is available almost all year round.

Almost the entire bottom of this reservoir is covered with a thick layer of silt, and various fish live under it. The average depth of this reservoir is about 4 meters.

To go fishing, fishermen gather near the village of Ratomka where boats and fishing equipment are available for hire.

The sea is home to all kinds of fish that are found in other neighboring bodies of water in Eastern Europe. Crucians, minnows, pikes, breams, pike perches, and crabs are all found here.

10. How to Get There

There are two main transport options – a car or a train. Also, there is a bus from Puškinskaja metro station, but it will take you to the BNTU Sanatorium, not directly to the beach. Of course, you may head off from Minsk by bike – it’ll definitely be a great workout.

If you are driving, take Minsk beltway M9 first, and then drive off to M7 and then follow it to curve half of the lake. Or you may go counterclockwise and follow H9036 road and then take H9031 to curve the other part of the lake.

The other popular way will take you 20-25 minutes to get there from the city. The trains go every 10-40 minutes from the Central railway station (Minsk Pasažyrski) and Minsk Paŭnočny at Maladzyožnaja metro station.
