Katsiaryna Aliaksandraŭna Halkina is a retired Belarusian individual rhythmic gymnast. She is the 2018 European all-around bronze medalist. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, and finished 6th in the all-around final.

1. She started competing in 2009

Halkina began competing in the junior international scene in 2009, she won many medals as a junior, at the 2010 Pesaro Junior World Cup where she won gold in ball, hoop and silver in Team Event.
At the 2010 Junior Grand Prix she won the all-around bronze medal. She won gold in hoop at the 2012 Pesaro Junior World Cup. At the 2012 European Junior Championships she and Team Belarus won the Team silver medal, she won silver in ribbon and ball final.
2. Halkina took up rhythmic gymnastics since she was very active
She was a hyperactive child so her mother suggested she took up a sport. She tried swimming and skating but settled on artistic gymnastics until a chance encounter.
“When we got to the sports palace, we asked a woman how to get to the artistic gymnastics hall. She told us, you need to go downstairs and turn right. We went downstairs, but we went straight. And we ended in the sports hall for rhythmic gymnastics.”
3. She has won several medals
Halkina and teammate Melitina Staniouta represented Belarus at the 2015 European Championships, where she won 3 medals: team silver and 2 individual bronzes for hoop and clubs. Halkina then competed at the 2015 Holon Grand Prix where she finished 16th in all-around after a drop and roll out of carpet from her hoop apparatus.
She qualified to 3 event finals: placing 4th in clubs, ball and ribbon. On May 22–24, Halkina competed at the 2015 Tashkent World Cup finishing 5th in the all-around with a total of 70.400 points. She qualified to 3 apparatus finals: she won silver in clubs and 2 bronze in ribbon, ball.
4. She was in Germany for her knee treatment
Halkina’s knee started aching with every strained movement. Katsiaryna did research and got in contact with the company named German Medical Union (DMU) that helps people find treatment options abroad. Having studied her case, the consultant found one of the best experts in trauma and sports medicine in Germany.

In Katsiaryna’s case, surgery was required to become pain-free, so Katsiaryna agreed with the treatment plan and went to Berlin, where Dr. Teßmann successfully operated on her.
5. Halkina had a heart surgery at 14
At age 14 she had heart surgery after it became clear she would pursue a career as an athlete. “My operation was done so that I could continue competing in high level sports. Nothing terrible had happened. I had a condition that closes the valve of the heart. If the problem was left as it was, I would snot be able to withstand heavy loads. I missed a year in recovery, then got back in shape.”
6. She has taken part in theatre and music projects
She has taken part in a number of theatre and music projects, including on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus. “This is an invaluable experience of performing on the stage in front of a completely different audience, filled with vivid emotions and new acquaintances.”
7. Halkina had a very unique style in rhythmic gymnastics
Katsiaryna Halkina is one of the gymnasts who embodies artistry on the carpet. Her distinct style and presence, while adored by so many, was difficult to preserve while also keeping up with the ever-increasing difficulty score. Based on Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ , the music for this routine is a version of the famous piece re-invented by Gustavo Montesano and Carlos Gomez, called ‘Moonlight Rumba’ .
It suits Katsiaryna Halkina very much, and has a romantic and emotional tone which Katya translates into body and apparatus motion effortlessly. The elegant black leotard that she wore at the World Championships in Sofia 2018 complemented this unforgettable story which she told on the carpet – that of love, intimacy and vulnerability.
8. She did a routine to a sad and melancholic tune in 2017
Halkina’s ball routine from 2017 is a sad and melancholic piece, set to classical music by Russian composer Mikhail Glinka, and his Nocturne in F minor (‘La Séparation’- Eng. ‘The Separation’).
This routine best summarizes Katya’s style. She has often chosen slow, emotional, and lyrical music for her routines, which makes me wonder if she is perhaps a sensitive soul that is moved by music with gentle and subtle quality.
9. She announced the end of her career in 2021
Five-time winner of the world championships in rhythmic gymnastics Halkina announced the end of her sports career. The 24-year-old athlete competed for Belarus.
“And then this beautiful day came when, waking up in the morning, you do not need to go to the gym, and you are generally absolutely free. What I want to say here… I want to say thank you to you – my favorite fans and supporters! You have always been with me, supporting me: writing, sending gifts, surprising me with incredible deeds! And I want to dedicate this post to you. My sports career is ending, but I’m sure you will be able to see me more than once at creative evenings, in theaters and at concerts!” Halkina wrote.
10. She now works as a diplomat
On October 11, 2021, she announced to fans via her Instagram account that she had moved to Moscow to start a master’s program at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. She is employed by the Belarus Embassy in Moscow as of 2021.
