The activist’s family includes her mother who goes by the name Evgenia Shesterikova and her sister Natalya Leonyuk. Her grandfather was Peter Shesterikov. He was a prominent writer and there is a street in Mogilev (a city in Belarus) named to honor him.

She went to Belarus State University where she studied International Relations and graduated in the year 1998. Furthermore, joined the Belarus State Economic University (BSEU) in their school of business called the Higher School of Management and Business. She was in the institution from 2004-2006.
 
On top of that, she proceeded for further studies in Hyderabad, India at the National Institute of Small and Medium Enterprises in 2008. With a business-related academic background, she has built a career on the same rising to the rank of a business development manager in international corporations like Microsoft.

Veronika’s husband Valery Tsepkalo decided to take part in the 2020 Belarusian presidential election. Veronika went with her husband during his campaign trials.
 
Unfortunately, her husband Valery was denied the presidential election registration which led to the unification of the opposition candidate campaign Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Valery Tsepkalo, and Viktor Babariko.
 
Besides, Veronika was her husband’s representative at campaign rallies of Tikhanovskaya. Her husband and children left the country because they feared for their safety.
 
Over and above that,  during that time Veronika was under pressure from the government. Even her sister was not safe for she was summoned by the government for questioning and to testify against Valery Tsepkalo. 

4. Veronika’s mother was accused of a criminal offense 

Veronika spoke at a Minsk rally on 30th July 2020 in defense of her mother’s accusations. In the event, she talked about the falsification of a criminal case against her mother. Yet at that time her mother was in a serious medical condition. 

5. She fled Belarus on the eve of the 2020 presidential election

Tsepkalo prioritized her freedom and didn’t want to become a victim of political persecution. So, she left her nation the day before the 2020 Belarusian presidential election. She went to Moscow where her family had earlier sought safety in. Thus, she voted at the Belarusian embassy in Moscow.
 
Once the presidential election was over the incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko was declared the winner. The election was believed by some including Veronika to be a fraud.
 
Subsequently, Veronika declared that other countries should recognize Tikhanovsakaya as a legitimately elected president. She kept being on the move henceforth and was cited in Poland with her husband and children on 9th October 2020. Also, on 8th September she was reported to be in Ukraine.

In December 2020 Veronika was among the representatives of the democratic Belarusian opposition given the Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament in May 2022.  The gift is aimed at honoring champions of human rights and freedom of thought fighters.
 
In addition, she received the Charlemagne Prize together with Belarusian opposition leaders Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Maria Kalesnikava. The award is issued to persons that have shown dedication to the service of European unification. 

7. Her move to Poland was well organized

The arrival of the Veronika family in Poland was a result of the team effort of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration, the border personnel, and the civic coalition.
 
In the aftermath of the elections were various protests against the same in Belarus. This led to a few deaths during the outcry and over 7,000 people were as well detained. 

8. Veronika’s husband was a diplomat before joining politics 

Veronika is married to Valery Tsepkalo who was a former Washington ambassador before participating in the 2020 presidential election. The two have two sons.

She was an advisor to Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya during her contest for the 2020 Belarusian presidential elections. Alexander Lukashenko who was the incumbent was declared a winner amidst controversy. Hence making Tikhanovskaya the opposition leader and head of the Belarusian democratic movement.

10. She opposed president Lukashenko’s leadership

Veronika believed that the actions against her allegedly by the government were because Lukashenko is a male chauvinist. He never considers women as equal challengers. So he is believed to have forced his way into office as head of state in Belarus since his main opponent was a woman, Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya.
 
Veronika Tsepkalo is a lionheart. She has stood for the truth throughout her political activism. Moreover, she mastered the courage to take a stand against Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko.
