Where to Eat Poke in Barcelona

You won’t have any trouble hunting down poke while in Barcelona, that I know for sure.

This Hawaiian/Japanese dish popped up all over Barcelona almost over night. Every time the craving kicks in, there is a poke house within walking distance of wherever I am.

Nevertheless, I’ll give you my top picks for where to enjoy the cuisine while in Barcelona. When it comes to raw fish, it’s always better to head to somewhere that comes recommended — read on!

Tiki Pokè in Barcelona

I used to have a love/hate relationship with Tiki Poke in the north of the city. They remain one of the best places to eat poke in Barcelona, but for a long time they were using far too much plastic per meal, with no option of a glass bowl even if you were eating in.

Thanks to public demand, they have since switched all of their in store plastic to PLA; which is a biodegradable form of plastic made from cornstarch. It’s better than nothing, though we still should push for glass bowls and metal cutlery for anyone eating in — mention this when you arrive to order.

The ingredients that they use are of the highest quality and their bowls are outstanding. I love their brown rice and ahi tuna combos, but salmon lovers will swoon over their fresh Norwegian.

Portion wise their regular size is more than enough food, which says a lot coming from someone who is usually hungry after a large.

The Hip Fish in Barcelona

I LOVE The Hip Fish. I make time to visit whenever I find myself in Barcelona’s old town for a meeting or free guided walking tour.

They are a poke house and sushi burrito hybrid. Yes, read that again slowly.

For those who don’t know what a sushi burrito is: imagine a single, giant sushi roll with all your favorite fillings, topped with soy sauce and mayonnaise. Eaten like a burrito — obviously.

You’ll place your order using a check sheet of bases, proteins, fillings, toppings and sauces. They sheets have English on one side and Spanish on the other. This system is great for vegans and vegetarians because they are able to restrict exactly what is included in their bowls — one can also make a basic salad if desired, no bases or protein needed.

Poké Maoli in Barcelona

Sometimes when you’ve had a long day on the beach you just need to keep things simple, and Poke Maoli does just that.

This poke house sits right at the northern tip of the Barceloneta peninsula, ready to serve hungry sun bathers and swimmers seven days a week. It’s a short walk to get to from the beaches in Barcelona, and poke is a great food for sticky, hot days because the ingredients are light & cool.

Because of the popularity of this location, Poke Maoli’s prices are a bit higher than poke houses you’ll find further inland. There are actually a handful of Poke Maoli locations in Barcelona, but this one on the coast has always been my favorite.

Note that there is nowhere to eat inside at Poke Maoli, you must take away and eat elsewhere. The beach nearby makes for the perfect picnic spot.

Kaymana in Barcelona

If you’re situated down the south of the peninsula and can’t make it up to the norther for Poke Maoli, thankfully there is a great poke house down this end as well.

Kaymana is a poke house combined with a fabulous cafe menu. Their poke runs as a buffet, but someone else dishes up for you. You’ll only eat all of your favorite things hand picked by you to create your dream poke bowl.

Kaymana does burgers, nachos and some outstanding patatas bravas. Their street seating is wonderful for a cold beer or glass of champagne as the sun goes down over the Barcelona coast.

I do feel like I’ve mastered the art of poke bowl creation at this poke house, for anyone interested my preferences go as follows: sushi rice base, half salmon half tuna protein, mango, edemame, avocado, tomatoes, onions, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, tamari and spicy mayo. You’re welcome.

Hula Poke Food in Barcelona

Hula Poke is a hot-spot for the cuisine in the city center. There is a continuous flow of tourists and guided walking tours through these streets, so grab-&-go foods are the go-to.

Hula is the best value for money for poke in Barcelona, which is surprising given its popularity and location. The portions are extraordinary; eat here at midday and you won’t need another bite until late in the evening when the Spanish locals head out for dinner.

This is also the only poke spot where I have encountered actual Hawaiian people in the line ahead of me waiting to place their order. I guess they trust it too, which is good enough for me.

Poke is great food for late night dining, and Hula has blessed us by staying open until midnight daily.
