Top 10 Most Famous Singers from Barbados

The music of Barbados includes distinctive national styles of folk and popular music, including elements of Western classical and religious music.

The culture of Barbados is a syncretic mix of African and British elements, and the island’s music reflects this mix through song types and styles, instrumentation, dances, and aesthetic principles.

Barbadian folk traditions include the Landship movement, which is a satirical, informal organization based on the Royal Navy, tea meetings, tuk bands, and numerous traditional songs and dances.

In modern Barbados, popular styles include calypso, spouge, contemporary folk, and world music. Barbados is, along with Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, one of the few centers for Caribbean jazz.

However, the music is aligned with famous singers like Shontelle Layne, Robyn Rihanna Fenty,  Joseph Saddler, and Allison Hinds who have made the country known for the beautiful jazz music from the bands formed by various organizations.

1. Robyn Rihanna Fenty

She is also known as Rihana, she was born 20^th  of  February  1988, in St. Michael parish, Barbados. She is a  Barbadian pop and rhythm-and-blues (R&B) singer who became a worldwide star in the early 21st century,

As a child, she was interested in listening to Caribbean music, such as reggae, as well as American hip-hop and R&B. She enjoyed singing and won a high-school talent show with a rendition of a Mariah Carey song.

At about the same time, she started a girl group with two friends. She attracted the attention of Evan Rogers, an American record producer in 2004.

2. Shontelle Layne

Her official name is Shontelle Layne, she was born on October 4, 1985. She is a Barbadian singer. In 2008, She first released her debut album Shontelligence.

In 2010 she released her second album, No Gravity.  Her singles “T-Shirt” and “Impossible” achieved international success. In 2020, Shontelle released “Remember Me”.

3. Allison Hinds

She was born in London in1970 and grew up in Plaistow. Both of her parents were from the island of Barbados, and her father was a worker at Ford’s Dagenham plant. Her parents divorced when she was 11 years old.

She migrated to Barbados with her mother after the break up of her parents. In 1985 She competed in the Richard Stoute teen talent contest and finished third.

She was a lead vocalist in the popular band Square One, joining in 1987 and recording several albums with the band before leaving in 2004 after her daughter Saharan was born.

In 1992, she won the Barbados Song Contest with the Duet and John King’s “Hold You in a Song”, the Road March in 1996 and 1997, and the Party Monarch competition in Barbados in 1997

She has her own band, “The Alison Hinds Show”, formed in 2005, with Hinds as the main singer and most of the other members of the band young dancers and musicians.

Her debut solo album Soca Queen was released in October 2007.  In 2010 is when she released her latest album Caribbean Queen and contains collaborations with Shaggy, Richie Spice, and Jah Cure, with whom she collaborated on the single “Team Up” in 2009.

She continues to expedition worldwide and has performed at many of the West Indian Carnivals and festivals including Sumfest, and the West Indian American Carnival in Brooklyn.

4. Krosfyah

 It was formed in 1989 from the earlier band Higher Level by Edwin Yearwood, Michael Agard, Felix Ford, and Anthony Bailey, Crossfire (as they were initially known) initially played covers and local folk songs on the Barbados tourist circuit of hotels and nightclubs

5. Rupert Clarke

He was born on September 10, 1975, and his other name was Rupee. He is a soca musician from Barbados.

 He was born in the military barracks in Germany to a German mother and a Bajan father, who was serving in the British armed forces at the time. He later migrated to Barbados. Where he was signed to Atlantic Records.

6. Joseph Saddler

He is known as Grandmaster by his peers. He was born on January 1, 1958, and popularly known by his stage name Grandmaster Flash.

He is a Barbadian-American DJ and rapper. He is well-thought-out to be one of the pioneers of hip-hop DJing, cutting, scratching, and mixing

7. Stetson Wiltshire

His peer’s name is Red Plastic Bag, he was born on June 17, 1961, in Bayfield, Saint Philip. He began his execution at an early age. In 1979 is when he took off in his career, but he started singing professionally in mid-1980. Due to artistically infusion of reggae and soca beats in his songs he became popular.

8. Mighty Gabby

He was born on March 30, 1948, he is a Barbadian calypsonian and folk singer, and a Cultural Ambassador for the island of Barbados.

He joined the Barbados Theater Workshop and composed much of the music for its play Under the Duppy Parasol, which had a successful run in New York.

He returned to music, and carnival success, in 1976,

9. Jomo Lord  

He was born in Trinidad in 1975. He is the son of one of Trinidad’s most influential as well as obscure recording artists, Mansa Musa. He was born into a tradition of artistry.

In 1978, they moved to the island of Barbados, his musical predispositions made themselves strong from as early as three years old.

10. Herold Winston

“Harry” Beckett was on May 30, 1935. He lived up to July 22, 2010. He was a British trumpeter and flugelhorn player of Barbadian origin. Born in Bridgetown, Saint Michael, Barbados, He learned to play music in a Salvation Army band.  

He was a resident of the UK since 1954, where he had an international reputation. He also played with Charles Mingus in the 1962 film All Night Long.

In the 1960s, he worked and verified within the band of bass player and composer Graham Collier, absorbent the connection over a 16-year period. Beginning in 1970, Beckett led groups of his own, recording for Philips, RCA, and Ogun Records.
