The University of Dhaka is a public research university located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is the oldest university in Bangladesh. On the first day of July 1921, the university opened its doors to students. Today, it is the largest public research university in Bangladesh, with a student body of 37,018 and a faculty of 1,992. It was identified by Asia Week as one of the top 100 universities in Asia.

It has made significant contributions to the modern history of Bangladesh. Its students and teachers played a central role in the rise of Bengali nationalism and the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.  In 2021, hundred years of Dhaka University was completed.

The Dhaka University Library comprises three buildings: The administrative building, the main library building, and the science library building. 1.It is the oldest university

Dhaka University is one of the best known universities in Bangladesh. It was established in 1921, thus it holds the distinction of being the oldest university in Bangladesh. As it boasts a list of famous alumni who include the Nobel peace prize winner and the first president of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and more than 10 former presidents and multiple prime ministers, who studied there.

2.It is the largest public research university

Today, it is the largest public research university in Bangladesh. It has a student body of 37,018 and a faculty of 1,992. Nawab Bahadur Sir Khwaja Salimullah, played a pioneering role in establishing the university in Dhaka, he donated 600 acres of land from his estate for this purpose.

3.It hosts inter-collegiate sports tournaments

Dhaka  University hosts various inter-collegiate sports tournaments at inter-city and national levels. The University of Dhaka ground is the official stadium of the University of Dhaka.

It  organizes sports and other extracurricular and recreational activities. Office of the director of physical education provides three types of programs: Compulsory Physical Education, Certificate course in coaching major games and sports, and Intramural and extramural programs.

The Directorate also organizes and conducts interdepartmental and inter-hall tournaments, individual hall athletics, Dhaka university athletics, and inter-university games and sports. Students participate in national championships in games and sports for which prior training and coaching are offered.

4.It has been internationally ranked

In 2011 and 2012, the University of Dhaka  was ranked 551  as one of the Top world universities w list out of over 30,000 universities  around the world. In 2014 t0 2015 ,it was ranked 701 by the QS World University ranking.

In September 2015, QS World University Rankings published their 2015 edition of World University Rankings of 2015/16 and ranked DU at 126th position in Asia and 701–750 position in the world. In Times Higher Education 2018 Global University Ranking, University of Dhaka is placed in 1001+ position among the world universities.

5.Sir Philip Hartog was the first vice chancellor of the university

The university had 28 vice chancellors, but Sir Philip Hartog was the first vice chancellor of the university. He was a British chemist and educationalist who undertook this role in England and India.

University of Dhaka being a residential teaching foundation for  Hartog , he was  therefore made the first vice-chancellor of the university in 1920.The current vice chancellor is Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman.

6.The University’s distinguished alumni include a Nobel Peace prize winner

Muhammad Yunus is a distinguished alumni in University of Dhaka. He is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist and civil society leader who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance in 2006. These loans are given to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Yunus and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts through microcredit to create economic and social development from below”. Yunus has also  received several other national and international honours. He received the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.

7. It has played a major role in the modern history of Bangladesh

The University of Dhaka  has made significant contributions to the modern history of Bangladesh. After the Partition of India, it became the focal point of progressive and democratic movements in Pakistan. Its students and teachers played a central role in the rise of Bengali nationalism and the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

8. It has played a role in the Bengali Language Movement

The university played a significant role in the Bengali Language Movement, when Bengalis joined to fight against Urdu being the official language in East Pakistan.  It was a political movement in  East Pakistan in 1952, which was  advocating the recognition of the Bengali language as an official language of the then-Dominion of Pakistan in order to allow its use in government affairs, the continuation of its use as a medium of education, its use in media, currency and stamps, and to maintain its writing in the Bengali script.

9. It has a medical Centre

The Medical Centre of the University of Dhaka is situated  near the Science Annex Building. It offers free medical service and free pathological examinations to students, teachers, and staff and also family members of the teachers and staff. The Centre provides service round the clock, seven days a week, with 30 doctors working in shifts. The Centre has a dental unit, eye unit, X-ray department, and two ambulances.

10. The last DUCSU election took place after 29 years

Dhaka University Central students’ Union is the official students’ union of the University. It is therefore referred to as DUCSU in Bangladesh. The DUCSU exists to represent Dhaka University students in the decision making of the university. It was established in the academic year of 1922 to 1923 as Dhaka University student union. In 2019 it’s when the DUCSU last elections took place , which was after 29 years.
