Ayub Bachchu is considered to have been one of the greatest all-time lead singers and rock guitarists of all time in Bangladesh. He was a rock guitarist, composer, singer, and songwriter. Ayub Bachchu is perhaps more famously known as the founder of one of Bangladesh’s main rock bands, LBR, which earned him major success as the lead singer and lead guitarist of the band.

In some circles, Ayub Bachchu is considered one of the pioneers of modern Bangladeshi pop music. While there are many known things, about Ayub Bachchu, here is a list of things many fans would be surprised to find out about the legendary icon.

1.LRB Wasn’t His First Band

For 27 years, Ayub Bachchu was famous for being the lead singer and lead guitarist for the band LBR. However, many assume that because he stayed so long with the band, that must be where his inception, growth, and whole career lay. This was not the case. Ayub Bachchu’s first joined a rock band called “Spider” in 1974 up to 1977.

He then joined and formed his first band “Ugly Boys” in 1977 while still in high school. In both bands, he played as lead guitarist. In 1980, Ayub joined a band known as “Souls” where he played as lead guitarist for ten years which he recorded four studio albums. LBR was formed in 1991 after he left his former band to go form his own.

2.His Music Icon Was Jimi Hendrix

Talent like Bachchu’s was one of the best all of Bangladesh pop industry had ever seen and had to have been influenced by some major powerhouses back in the day. It was an era of mainstream rock bands and musicians.

One of the most influential to Ayub Bachchu’s sound was the icon himself Jimi Hendrix, the American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His unique electrical guitar sound was a major influence on Ayub Bachuchu’s sound. Other singers that influenced his music were Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

3.Ayub’s Unique Guitar Collection

A good sportsman knows his tools. This was the case with Ayub Bachchu as well. By the time of his death, Ayub Bachchu owned about 65 unique guitars collected throughout his long-standing career.

He mostly played Ibanez guitars, in particular the Carvin guitar. He used Carvin Kiesel guitars, Dean Rusty Cooley RC6, and Michael Angelo Batio. He also owned several signature guitars by some of his favorite guitarists such as Steve Vai JEM Junior White and Jason Becker JB200C.

4.His Parents Didn’t Initially Support Him

Born to Mohammed and Nurjahan Chowdry in Patiya, Ayub was the eldest of two brothers. His nickname was Robin. He got his first acoustic guitar from his father as a gift in 1973 while he was still in primary school from there on, he learned to play guitar from the lead singer of “Spiders”, a band he would later on join.

In high school, he joined the band and later on went to form his own his parents were not in particular thrilled with his career choice even though his father is the one who initially sparked his interest in guitars. Later after they saw how passionate he was, they supported him and he went on to be one of the greatest icons in rock music in Bangladesh.

5.Married His Star-Crossed Love

Bachchu met Ferdonous Chardana in early 1986 in Dhaka. He said he fell in love with her at first sight, however, things did not work out initially between the two of them as Chandan’s family opposed the coupling as Ayub was still a struggling artist yet to break through.

He dedicated a song from his band’s debut album to her. Later on in 1991, after he had had some success in his music, he proposed and both families agreed to the union. The two were blessed with two children, a son, and a daughter.

6.Ayub Bachchu Founded a Production and Recording Company

Going by the name AB kitchen, Ayub Bachchu left his mark on the future generation of entertainers by founding the recording studio that includes production in 1998. Over 40 studio albums have since been produced by the label. The first album to be produced belonged to the founder Shomoy in 1991. Since 2001, all of LRB’s albums have since been produced by the label.

7.His Famous Band Name Changed a Couple of Times

The band known as Little River Band formed in 1991, actually went by the name Little Robin Band, this was a credit to his nickname, Robin. Bachchu is said to have changed the name to River instead of Robin after he found that he was not so little anymore. Bachchu had stated however that the band’s name was initially Yellow River Band but was mistakenly called Little River Band during a show in Dhaka in its early days. The name stuck and became what is now known as the iconic LRB.

8.Award Winning Guitarist

Ayub Bachchu was highly regarded as one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in Bangladesh. He won six Meril Prothom Alo Awards, one City-Channel 1 Music award with LRB, and the Bachsas Awards in Best Male Vocalist in 2004. In 2017, he won the Tele Cine Lifetime Achievement Award.

9.He Died of Cardiac Issues

In 2009, Bachchu underwent successful heart valve surgery. Six years later, he was admitted back to the hospital due to lung ailment issues due to the accumulation of water in his lungs causing respiratory problems. He, later on, died due to cardiac failure in his home in Dhaka at the age of 56. He was buried in Chaitanya Goli beside his mother’s grave.

10.His Band Was the First Bangladesh Band to Perform in Madison Square Garden

Before making it big as a musician, Ayub Bachchu performed in wedding events in his native Chittagong hometown to make ends meet. Coming from such humble beginnings in his career to his band, LRB, being the first Bangladesh rock music band to perform at what is the world’s most famous stage is no small fete. This achievement bears witness to the genius and remarkable talent of one of the most iconic rock guitar players in Bangladesh.
