Kurmitola Golf Club is a prestigious golf club located in Dhaka cantonment Bangladesh. It is operated by Bangladesh Army with the Chief of Army Staff as its president.

The club was formed in 1956 and shifted to its current location in 1966 before it was offered to foreign diplomats in 2016. The decision was later rescinded by the ministry of foreign affairs citing security reasons.

 A former caddy at the golf club became the first Bangladeshi in history to compete in golf at the Olympics in 2016. The club has held professional national and international golfing tournaments.

 1. Kurmitola Golf Club is Located within Dhaka Cantonment 

Kurmitola Golf Club is located within Dhaka Cantonment in the northern part of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The cantonment hosts the headquarters of the Bangladesh Army and the Air Force.

The Cantonment is home to all other Bangladesh’s major military installations including the 6th Independent Air defense Artillery Brigade, Defence Services Command & Staff College, the 14th Independent Engineer Brigade, and the 86th Independent Signal Brigade.

It also hosts the Army golf clubhouse, the golf garden, Army Golf Club, the Senakunja auditorium, Bangladesh Army Stadium,  and the Dhaka cantonment Bangabandhu museum.

Kurmitola Golf Club (KGC) is a veritable heaven for golf enthusiasts in Bangladesh and other golfers around the world. The Club Boosts one of the prettiest and best-maintained courses in the sub-continent. The course is strategically challenging and playable round the year.

The club settled at the present location in the mid-sixties, and the Initial layout of the course was done by a keen golfer and architect Mr. Pennink. The newly laid course was redesigned and developed to its present challenging form by Dr. Sukitti Klangvhisai Ph.D.

Today Kurmitola Golf Club is an international golf club having linked with all renowned clubs of the world. It has a nineteen-hole golf course with a land area of 126 acres.

3. Kurmitola Golf Club was Formed in 1956

The history of the Kurmitola Golf Club can be traced back to 1950. At that time the club was known as Dhaka Golf Club and was located at Sahrawardy Uddyan

Due to the need for a bigger space, the club shifted to an abandoned Kurmitola Airfield in 1955 which is now Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) International Airport.

It relocated to its current location in 1966 after its previous location was reserved for the construction of an international airport.

4. Kurmitola Golf Club Shares the Location with Army Golf Club

Kurmitola Golf Club shares the same location with Army Golf Club in Dhaka Cantonment, Bangladesh.  It is also operated by Bangladesh Army and is dedicated to providing world-class golfing facilities to the golfers in Bangladesh.

The Golf Club was founded on 28 May 2001 and was opened by then Chief of Army Staff Lt General M Harun-Ar-Rashid. It is affiliated with Kurmitola Golf Club and has a 9-hole course of over 40 acres in size.

5. The Kurmitola Golf Club Restaurant 

The Kurmitola Golf Club restaurant is located in the Kurmitola Golf Club. The KGC Restaurant has a Mega restaurant on the ground floor and a Mini restaurant on the first floor.

It has an excellent environment with friendly staff and serves a wide range of local and international cuisines. The restaurant interior is excellent and it’s an ideal place to host families and friends.

6. The Bangladesh Army Stadium

Another major feature near the Kurmitola Golf Club is the Bangladesh Army Stadium. It is a multi-purpose stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh which currently is mostly used for football matches.

The stadium hosts the home sports matches of the Bangladesh Army and has a capacity of 20,000. In 2021 the stadium was used as a Covid-19 Pandemic testing station for people traveling abroad.

7. Senakunja Auditorium

Senakunja is the official auditorium and convention center of the Bangladesh Armed Forces also located in Dhaka Cantonment.  The venue holds official events for the Bangladesh Armed Forces and other social gatherings.

The Annual Armed Forces Day is held here on 21 November to commemorate the establishment of the Bangladesh military in 1971 during the Bangladesh Liberation war.

It also holds an annual Iftar party hosted by the Bangladesh Armed Forces and attended by the elite members of the Bangladesh community.

8. Kurmitola Golf Club Membership

Kurmitola Golf Club offers full membership to Serve Bangladesh’s Defence Services Officers and Retired Defense Services Officers. Officers of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and below and equivalent both serving & retired may apply for membership having 14 handicaps.

Serving civil government officers of the rank of Joint Secretary or equivalent and above (Serial 21 and above of Warrant of Precedence 1986) are eligible for Kurmitola Golf Club Membership.

Private members of the public can apply for membership but must have Minimum age of 30 years and must be a university graduate. They also should be a regular taxpayer and work at a senior management level for reputed Multi National or National Companies.

9. Army Golf Club Dressing Code

Like many other Golf clubs around the world, Kurmitola Golf Club has its own dressing code that must be followed by all members. A Member should wear a shirt or a tee shirt and must be tucked in with trousers.

Shorts should be below knee length while jeans trousers and jogging shoes are not allowed on the army golf course. A member should only wear golf shoes.

10. Kurmitola Golf Club Hosts International Golf Tours

Kurmitola Golf Club has hosted organized national tournaments every year since the country got independence.

Bangladesh Amateur Golf Championship (BAGC) an international golf tournament is being held at KGC since 1982. Approximate 50 international amateur and professional golf tournaments are held at KGC including five Asian tours, many Asian Development tours (ADT), and the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).
