Ramna Park is a large park and recreation area situated at the heart of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. This forested park with a pond near its Centre is one of the most beautiful areas in Dhaka. Islamabad’s diplomatic district is named Ramna as a tribute to Ramna Park. 

It was officially inaugurated in 1949 with an area of 88.50 acres (358,100 m2) of land with 71 species of plants. The large open spaces on the southwest facing the lake were used for holding National Fairs and Exhibitions. Ramna Park is a very large and nice park. It is a traditional and historical park. This park is one of the most beautiful areas in Dhaka with lots of trees and a lake near its center.

1. Ramna was started during Mughal Rule

The history of Ramna started about 1610 CE during Mughal rule,  the city of Dhaka was then founded by Subahdar Islam Khan under Emperor Jahangir. At that time two beautiful residential areas were developed in the northern suburb of Dhaka city. New residential houses, gardens, mosques, tombs, and temples were built in this area during that period. After the fall of the Mughal rule, Ramna gradually lost much of its glory. Ramna was then a barren area with bushes, abandoned or dilapidated buildings, tombs, and old temples.

2. It grows various species of plants

Ramna Park grows 71 species of flowering trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals, 36 species of fruit-bearing plants, 33 species of medicinal plants and 41 species of forestry, and 11 other species. Walkways inside the park have been widened and five new gates built for entry from different sides. The park features many beautiful and modern venues for relaxation.  These parks also have many big banyan trees.  There are sitting places under this banyan tree. Besides, there are also many sitting places Again, There is also special management for taking a rest. This park has many flower gardens. This park is very clear and the government is many active in this matter.

3. It was a venue for the celebration of Bengali

The celebration of the Bengali new year Pahela Baishakh begins at dawn arranged by the cultural organization Chayanaut welcoming the year at Ramna Batamul under the banyan tree in the Ramna Park.

4. There is a designated place for exercise

Most mornings and afternoons joggers always go to Ramna Park to Jog. The park is usually crowded with visitors and joggers. 6. There is Ramna Kali Mandir Monument

In the 19th century, Ramna started regaining its glory when  Mr. Dowes who was a British Collector of Dhaka started a series of steps to develop the city. He engaged the convicts in clearing the bushes and demolishing almost all the tombs and monuments apart from the Ramna Kali Mandir monument.

7. There is a racecourse

 The renovated area was given the name Ramna Green and was fenced by a boundary for using it as a race course. In 1908 he began the work on a garden that took 20 years to take a shape. The Nawabs of Dhaka developed the racecourse area as a beautiful garden and named a part of it Shah Bagh, the royal garden. 

8. The park is near a miniature zoo

A new road from Shah Bagh to the Eden Building was constructed, and the eastern side of the road was developed as Ramna Park. A miniature zoo with a few animals and different kinds of birds is on the northeastern side of the present Supreme Court of Bangladesh building and was later moved to the present location at Mirpur. Some of the nearby attractions include the following; Baldha Gardens Attractions, and Rose Garden Attraction.

9. The landscape of the park was designed by the public works Department of Bangladesh

In 1952 the public works Department of Bangladesh designed the present landscape of Ramna Park. The lake was excavated deeper and extended in length. Walkways and garden paths were built in phases as sections were regraded and replanted. Irrigation of the rare variety of tree saplings was done by tree wells, with deep vertical tubes/watering pipes to encourage roots to grow deeply. A bud-shaped water tower to supply them was built on the park’s northern side.

In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II was accorded a rousing civic reception at Ramna Park with a display of local fireworks. A raised concrete platform was built for the Queen, the remnants of which can still be seen in the park close to the lake.
