The New Market area is triangular in shape with high arched entry gates on three sides. There are spaces for 440 shops and a triangular lawn at the center. The total area of the market spreads over 35 acres (140,000 m2) of land.

After its establishment, the market paved way for the modernization of the city, and it became the most popular destination for shopping and recreation centers for young people.

2. Dhaka New Market is Part of a Big Shopping Complex

Dhaka New Market is not limited to its original space of 35 acres space; rather it is a center of large shopping areas and complexes like Chadni Chawk, Chandrima shopping complex, Bot Tola new market, and Nilkhet book market.

During the 1980s, 3 more New Market blocks were constructed in the north under Dhaka City Corporation, for example, New Super Market for crockeries, Bonolata for kitchen market, Chandrima and Gausia market for varieties of items, and D block for groceries, each having over thousand shops.

The new market is one of the oldest markets in Dhaka city. It was built in 1954 and has the oldest buildings in the city. The market is one of the biggest attractions for tourists in the city’s historic interest.

It is built on 35 acres of land. Along with the main building, the new market has quite a few annexe buildings, which have given place to thousands of shops. These shops are categorized into clothes, jewellery, home decor, wooden furniture, food court, and various other genres.

Dhaka’s new market area is notorious for its traffic. So, the government came up with the idea of controlling the traffic. It divided the city into seven zones, with different market days.

The new market is in zone 4. Depending on the zone, the off day of New Market Dhaka is different from other shopping markets. Dhaka New Market is closed on Tuesdays but fully operational for the rest of the days.

5. Dhaka New Market Mosque

One of the prominent features located at the center of Dhaka’s new market is the Baitul Aman Jame Masjid mosque. A park inside has been converted into a mosque on the first-floor level with sixty new shops under it.

This shopping complex mainly stocks items for lady buyers only. Shops in this complex especially deal with bags, different types of jewelry, perfumes/body spray, and many other ladies’ related items.

7. New Super Market for Crockeries

In the 1980s, Dhaka’s new market’s northern part was extended into a separate section.  The New Super Market for crockeries and Banalota Market for kitchen utensils were built.

The new supermarket for crockeries sells all types of crockeries items at wholesale prices. The  Banalota Market for kitchen utensils is deal with all types of kitchen wares at very discounted prices.

8. Chandrima Super Market
