Tamim Iqbal Khan, better known as Tamim Iqbal, is a cricketer from Bangladesh. He was born in Chittagong on March 20, 1989. He is currently the captain of Bangladesh’s One-Day International team and is regarded as the country’s best batsman. Tamim made his One-Day International (ODI) debut in 2007 and his Test debut the following year in the third ODI of Bangladesh’s 2007 tour of Zimbabwe at the age of 18.

Despite scoring only 5 runs, selectors recognized his potential and named him to the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup squad. Tamim made his grand entrance in front of everyone. Tamim led Bangladesh to a group-stage victory over India, scoring 53 points to propel his team to victory.

Soon after, he made his Test debut against New Zealand, where he scored half centuries in both innings and introduced the world to a new star. His first century came against the West Indies in a Test in 2009, when he helped Bangladesh to their first overseas win.

He served as the national team’s vice captain from December 2010 to September 2011. The left-handed opener has been compared to Virender Sehwag, Sanath Jayasuriya, and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar due to his aggressive stroke play at the start of the innings.

1.Tamim hails from a family of talented cricketers

Tamim has cricket literally running in his blood. He is the nephew of former Bangladeshi captain Akram Khan, therefore inheriting the potential for greatness. Tamim’s brother, Nafees, was also a Test cricketer for Bangladesh. His father used to host small cricket tournaments to train his sons. In an interview, Nafees revealed that Tamim was the more talented one. Tamim used to hit 148 as the team chased 150 when he was 12 or 13.

2. Tamim was named Wisden cricketer of the Year

Tamim was named one of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack’s four Cricketers of the Year in 2011 for his performances against England. He was also named Wisden’s Test Player of the Year in October, beating out Graeme Swann and Virender Sehwag, who finished second and third, respectively.

Tamim scored 837 runs in seven Tests at an average of 59.78 during the qualifying period for the award. It was only the second time a Bangladeshi player had won the award, following Shakib Al Hasan the previous year.

3. He was the first Bangladeshi cricketer to play in New Zealand

When he signed with Nottinghamshire in 2011, he became only the second Bangladeshi player to play county cricket. He was signed by the Wellington Firebirds in 2012, making him the first Bangladeshi player to play in New Zealand’s domestic league.

4. Tamim holds numerous records in Bangladeshi cricket

Tamim scored 86 runs from 120 deliveries in the first innings of the first Test against England in March 2010. In the process, he became the fastest Bangladesh batsman in terms of innings to reach 1,000 Test runs, taking 19 innings to do so. He also became the third-youngest player in Test history to reach 1,000 Test runs (behind Sachin Tendulkar and compatriot Mohammad Ashraful).

He is Bangladesh’s all-time leading individual run scorer in international cricket. Not only that, but he also holds the record for the most centuries in Bangladesh, with 17 centuries in all formats to his credit.

5. He’s played for four of Bangladesh’s major cricket clubs

These clubs include :

  • Duronto Rajshahi,
  • Chittagong Vikings,
  • Chittagong kings and
  • Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League.

He plays for Peshawar Zalmi in Pakistan Super League.

6. In 2014, Tamim suffered a career-threatening injury

Tamim was diagnosed with a tear in his left knee, which forced him to miss several months of practice. He returned in time for the 2015 World Cup, but he did not perform well.

Tamim married Ayesha Siddiqa in a lavish ceremony in Chittagong in June 2013. Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was also in attendance. On February 28, 2016, he gave birth to his first son, Arham. On November 19, 2019, he gave birth to his first daughter, Alishba.

8. He considered changing his batting style to overcome a bad patch

Tamim Iqbal’s bat nearly forgot how to hit runs. Most of the time, he was dismissed cheaply, in a manner that was quite childish. He attempted to change his batting technique, but it was ineffective.Tamim never gave up hope and continued to work hard in the nets under the direction of coach Chandika Hathurusingha.

He worked harder on his flaws and decided to spend more time at the crease without changing his batting style. Tamim’s perseverance paid off, and his lean patch was laid to rest for a period.

9. Tamim bravely criticized his franchise over players’ treatment

In an unprecedented move by a player, Tamim spoke his mind by lamenting about the lack of respect by the Bangladesh Premier League towards players. He went on to state that professional cricket players should not be treated like beggars. He compared it to the way much more established leagues like the Indian Premier League had a lot of clout and money yet treated the players with respect, and urged his own league to replicate that.

10. The cover drive and flick shot are Tamim’s favorite shots

The cover drive in cricket is the act of stroking the ball through the covers with well-timed wrist work and conventional movement of the front foot toward the pitch of a delivery aimed at or outside the off stump. The cover drive is considered one of the most graceful shots playable in the sport. A flick shot on the other hand is usually played to a straight, full length ball or to one pitched on middle and leg. It’s played with a straight bat, as if the batsman were playing a drive, but on contact there is a flick of the wrists that sends the ball through mid-wicket.
