Top 10 Amazing Facts about Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho (National Martyrs’ Memorial)


 

Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho is a national heritage of Bangladesh located in Savar, about 35km southwest of Dhaka’s capital. It was constructed in memory of the heroes that died during the struggle for independence. 

The war of independence took place in1971and the victory led to the separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan. The structure is so beautiful that it attracts masses both locally and internationally

The structure was constructed by Concord Group and designed by Syed Mainul Hossain who was both a structural engineer and an architect. His design was selected after a competition was held for the design of the project among fifty-seven architects in 1978. 

The whole structure including the artificial lake and other facilities in the monument was completed in 1982 and it was inaugurated on December 13th of the same year.

1. It has a Unique Design and Structure

The unique structure consists of seven isosceles triangular planes which vary significantly in their size, height, and base. The planes used for construction are folded in the middle and then placed one after another.

The tallest part of the building is about 150 feet. The entire complex covers an area of about 84 acres and it is also surrounded by a green belt that measures about 24.7 acres.

In the front of the monument lies a mass of graves and an artificial pool of water bodies. The red bricks are used for the pavement and other structures while concrete is used for the monument tower.

2. Syed Mainul Hossain Designed the Outstanding Monument

Syed Mainul Hossain’s design was selected after a competition amongst fifty-seven competitors with different architects. He was both a structural engineer and an architect in Bangladesh and the designer of Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho which is one of the national landmarks of Bangladesh.

He also designed other major buildings which include; Bangladesh National Museum in 1982, the Shilpakala Academy auditorium, Bangladesh Bar Council Building in 1978, the Vocational teacher training institute and vocational training institute in 1977, and Uttara Model Town in 1985.

He also received awards for his beautiful designs which were Ekushey Padak (1988) and Sheltech Award (2007).

3. The Seven Pairs of the Wall Represent Significant Chapter in Bangladesh’s History

Each of the pairs of the wall has a significant meaning to the history of Bangladesh. They represent the following,

The war of independence in 1971 led to the death of very many people. The six-point movement in 1966.

The language movement in 1952. The constitution movement in 1956. The movement against the education commission in 1962. The mass uprising in 1969. The provincial election victory of the United Front in 1954

4. People Gather in National Memorial to Pay Homage to the Heroic Martyrs

People of all ages and classes gather at the National Memorial to show their respect to the heroic martyrs of the liberation war. Many people march with red or green flags in their hands while chanting slogans at the memorial premises.

Other people match while singing patriotic songs with flowers of different colors in their hands to pay homage to the fallen heroes.

The thousands of people that join the events are very overjoyed to pay respect to the 3 million martyrs and the two lakh women.

5. The Monument is a Symbol of Sacrifice and Valour

The magnificent structure was built for the memory of the heroic men and women who passed on in the war during the struggle for independence. That is the place where thousands of people congregate to pay their respect to the fallen heroes.
