Mount Batur is a sacred stratovolcano in Bali of 1717 meters height located in Kintamani. Batur volcano is considered to be more than 50,000 years old and was even more than 4000 meters high before the first eruption 29,300 years ago.

This eruption caused a collapse of the magma chamber that created two concentric calderas.Nowadays Mount Batur is marked by a collapsed top that is called a caldera.Let’s take a look at some of the most astonishing facts about it;

The view from the top of the mountain is so rewarding though, there are some technical parts with loose stones and sand which can be slippery but no huge drop offs and needs one to stay focussed on the steps. The Locals however even do this hike on flipflops, but it is not recommended.

Mount Batur has four different interconnected peaks, one on the rim of main crater called Nang dip peak, Jero Salin peak, Jero Wage peak and Daja Dauh peak. The best point for cath sunrise are Jero Salin, Jero Wage and Daja Dauh peak.

The less crowded is Daja Dauh peak, the crowded one is Jero Salin peak.This makes the Jero Salon peak the most loved and adored peak while this also makes the Daja Dauh peak best for only people who like privacy and also don’t like crowded places.

There several natural hot springs on Mount Batur including the Toya Bungkah hot springs which is good for relaxing the aching muscles, the mineral spring water flows into the various pools that range from 37 degrees Celsius and 43 degrees Celsius.

There are two hot spring places sitting next to each other namely; Batur Natural Hot Spring which is the one recommended of the two and the other is called Toya Devasya Natural Hot Spring Wellness Resort but this one is tacky and often crowded, so not suitable for people who don’t like crowded places.

The Mount Batur has several look out views. The best view is at Penelokan village. This means, ‘place to look’. But basically along the main road all the way to Kintamani you can see the entire Batur Lake (Danau Batur).Most visitors come to Mount Batur for the spectacular view of the volcano and the inner crater

Another excellent lookout point is at Pura Puncak Penulisan in Penulisan, the highest temple in Bali. You can take the 333 steps to the top temple called Pura Panajaron at 1745m. Here one can clearly see rice terraces for kilometers on end plus you can see parts of the north coast.

Mount Batur (Gunung Batur in Indonesian) is considered by the Balinese the second most important mountain on the island, after Mount Agung.Mount Batur and Lake Batur is home to one of the two most important gods in Bali, Goddess Ida Bhatari Dewi Danu, through her water, she provides life to Bali.

The main reason it is considered the second most important mountain is that Mount Batur Lake feeds a network of many rivers, streams, and holy springs in all directions of Bali. It is the source of life for many irrigation systems and groups (subak) which in turn have created those stunning rice terraces Bali is so famous for.

7.Mount Batur has erupted severally over the years 

Mount Batur has erupted severally over the years. The eruptions of Mount Batur happened in 1917, 1926, 1959, 1963, 1994, 1999 with the last one being in 2000.The eruption in 1917 killed 1,372 people, destroyed 2,500 temples and 65,000 houses.

Miraculously the lava stopped at the walls of the second most important temple of Bali, the Pura Ulun Danu Batur. This was considered a good omen to the local people.However, during the 1926 eruption, the temples and villages were completely destroyed.

The landscape and its surroundings have been created by the eruptions that took place in 1917, 1926 and 1963. In the past, life mainly evolved down in the crater. The villages of Kintamani and Batur used to be located there too.

There is a small village of Trunyan located along the eastern shore of the inner caldera in Mount Batur famous for its tradition of not burying the death. They do not cremate their dead like the other parts of Bali, instead, the remains of the deceased are placed slightly covered by rattan under a big banyan tree for the birds and wild animals to eat.

The Bali Aga believe that the birds will take the deceased soul with them to heaven and so encourages reincarnation. The bodies are also placed under the banyan tree for a very good reason as the trees obscure the smell of decay.

9.There are several hotels and restaurants near Mount Batur

There are several hotels near Mount Batur including; Black Lava Hostel (1.38 mi), Villa Jempana(2.33 mi), The Villas Tejakula (7.09 mi), Batur Green Hill (0.96 mi) and Spa Village Resort Tembok Bali (7.21 mi).

10.Mount Batur is mostly crowded during the dry months

Since this mountain very popular in the word and social media as well, it has increased the number of visitors lately. Especially during the dry months of July, August and December you can find it crowded with so many people visiting at this time. 

Usually there are more than 200 visitor everyday who want to capture sunrise from Mount Batur, if you want to climb when the atmosphere is rather quiet, and then choose January to April.It is currently one of the most visited areas in Indonesia and one of the best views in Bali.
