The Golden Roof Museum is a landmark building situated in the Old Town section of Innsbruck in Austria which was constructed in 1500; over 500 years ago.

 The Golden Roof Museum is considered the most famous symbol in Innsbruck.

The Golden Roof was decorated with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles to mark Emperor Maximilian I and Bianca Maria Sforza’s wedding.

To observe festivals, tournaments, and other events that took place in the square below the Golden Roof, the Emperor and his wife used to position themselves on the balcony.

1. Emperor Maximilian I Is Immortalized in The Golden Roof Museum

Sculpted reliefs and mural paintings adorn the entire oriel.

The first-floor balustrade is adorned with eight sculpted coats of arms with two flanking panels representing Emperor Maximilian’s territories while six coats of arms face the square.

Two flanking panels of the eight sculpted reliefs and mural paintings on the second-floor balustrade are associated with Maximilian’s life while the other six face the square.

Two central reliefs show Maximilian with the one on the right showing the Emperor with his court jester and his chancellor.

The central relief on the left show the Emperor with his beloved first wife Maria of Burgundy on the right and his second wife Bianca Maria Sforza holding an apple on the left.

2. Paintings by Jörg Kölderer Reveal the Culture of That Time

Above the coat of arms on the first-floor balustrade are frescoes which were painted by Jörg Kölderer in 1500.

Two knights bearing heraldic flags representing the Holy Roman Empire and Tyrol are depicted in the frescoes.

Scenes from the aristocratic life of that time are also depicted on the frescoes that adorn the interior of the loggia which were also painted by Jörg Kölderer.

3. The Flanking Reliefs Show the Popular Entertainment of That Time

Moorish dancers engaged in “acrobatic and grotesque dancing” are shown on the flanking reliefs in the Golden Roof Museum.

The common form of popular entertainment of that time was the “acrobatic and grotesque dancing” which Moorish dancers are shown performing.

Dancing of Andalusian origin is shown on the outer reliefs. Andalusians are an autonomous community found in southern Spain and are a European ethnic group, native to Andalusia.

4. The Original Reliefs Are Permanently Displayed in The Tyrolean State Museum

The original reliefs are permanently displayed in the Tyrolean State Museum which is also known as Ferdinandeum also located in Innsbruck just like the Golden Roof.

The Tyrolean State Museum which is also known as Ferdinandeum was founded by the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum Society in 1823.

The Ferdinandeum has been a major division of the Tyrolean State Museums Operating Company since 2007.

5. Archduke Friedrich IV Constructed the Golden Roof Building in Early Fifteenth Century

In the early fifteenth century, the Archduke Friedrich IV constructed the building that bears the Golden Roof Museum.

Initially the building was constructed as the residence of the Tyrolean sovereigns but not as museum.

It was Nikolaus Turing the Elder, the Innsbruck court builder who designed and built the 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles “Golden Roof” which was commissioned in 1493 by Emperor Maximilian I.

The Golden Roof which was designed and built by Nikolaus Turing the Elder, the Innsbruck court builder was commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I in 1493.

The Golden Roof with its 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles was commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I at the time of his marriage to Bianca Maria Sforza, his second wife.

The Golden Roof Can be said to have been built to honor Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan during her marriage to the Emperor in 1493.

7. The Golden Roof Was Designed to Serve as A Royal Observation Box

The Emperor and his imperial entourage were desirous of an ideal observation box to sit in and watch events organized in a square located below the Golden Roof.   

To enjoy festivals, tournaments, and other events that took place in the square below, the Golden Roof was designed to serve as a royal box where the Emperor and his imperial entourage could sit in state.

Even though the Golden Roof was designed to honor his second wife Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan, the emperor had an image of himself and his two wives painted on the balcony of the building.

The main aim of the image was to ensure that the Emperor does not alienate the allies gained by his first marriage to his first wife Maria of Burgundy.

8. The Golden Roof Houses the International Alpine Convention’s Office

The Golden Roof has housed the International Alpine Convention’s Office since January of 2003.

To champion sustainable development in the European Alps, eight Alphine Countries formed the Alphine Convention as a forum and a demonstration of their commitment to the goal.

The Innsbruck City Archives and the museum which is also called the Maximilianum are all housed in the Golden Roof building.

9. The Golden Roof has become Innsbruck’s World-famous landmark

The Golden Roof has become Innsbruck’s World-famous land mark as the designer and architect of the building created a masterpiece of art and architecture.

Niklas Türing the Elder, the builder is credited with the cycle of eighteen sandstone reliefs around the oriel which are the centerpiece of the Golden Roof.

The stylistic transition between late Gothic and early Renaissance are depicted by the artistically carved stone reliefs.

Till today the roof blinds onlookers with its reflected light when the sun rays hit directly on it due to the 2657 fire gilded copper tiles which make it a unique one.

10. The Golden Roof Provided the Ideal Setting for A Bollywood Movie Scene

As a part of the shooting of a romantic song “Dil Diyan Gallan” in March 2017 by Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif the Golden Roof provided an ideal setting for the scene.

The romantic song “Dil Diyan Gallan”   performed in March 2017 by Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in the Golden Roof has since attracted more than 540 million YouTube views.

The romantic scene was performed for the action-packed spy romance Indian movie Tiger Zinda Hai produced by Yash Raj Films; a Bollywood movie release.
