Karijini National Park is located in the Pilbara and is the second largest of the Western Australian National Parks. The rock formations in and around the gorges of Karijini formed more than 2500 million years ago.’
Some rocks in the Hamersley Ranges have been in existence for at least 3500 million years. It’s amazing how ancient the landscape is.
These ancient rocks are rich in iron and silica and are subsequently rich in color. The best time to visit Karijini is between May and September.
The main road into Karijini National Park is sealed. Many roads are listed as 4WD.

The hike to reach Hancock Gorge is as fun as the views are astounding. But be prepared to scramble along some rocks, swim through large canals, or wade through waist-deep water as you travel along the infamous Spiders Walk.

Karijini is home to no less than three distinct peoples: the Innawonga, Kurrama, and Banyjma Aboriginal, whose origins can be dated back to more than 20,000 years ago (meaning they were around during the last ice age…).
Given its natural beauty, it’s no surprise that the gorges served as a keystone to these cultures’ traditions. And for people interesting in learning more about Australia’s rich native history, here you can find everything from sacred burial sites to group meeting places.
