Asia’s most influential people have had significant importance and impact on how the continent has developed and progressed. Some of these individuals came from diverse backgrounds which include politics, business, religion, entertainment, and sports.

1. Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who is popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi across the world is ranked among the top influential people from Asia. He was an Indian revolutionary, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist.

Mahatma Gandhi used nonviolent resistance to lead India’s successful campaign for independence from British rule. He also inspired the movements for civil rights and freedom around the world. The honorific epithet Mahtm (Sanskrit for “great-souled”, or “venerable”), which was first applied to him in 1914 in South Africa, is now used worldwide.

2. Mao Zedong

Born on 26th December 1893, Mao Zedong who is famously known as Chairman Mao was a Chinese Communist revolutionary. He is known for being the founder of the People’s Republic of China.

Chairman Mao led as the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China till his death in 1976. He was an ideologically Marxist-Leninist with his military strategies, theories, and political policies being called Maoism.

3. Lee Kuan Yew

Born Harry Lee Kuan Yew but mostly referred to by his initials LKY, Lee was a Singaporean lawyer, politician, and statesman. He served as the inaugural Prime Minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990.

Lee was also the Secretary-General of the People’s Action Party for several years between 1954 to 1992. From 1955 to his death in 2015, Lee was a member of the parliament of Tanjong Pagar. He is known globally as the founding father of Singapore.

4. Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi, also known as Suu Kyi, is a Burmese politician, diplomat, author, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She served as Myanmar’s State Counsellor (the equivalent of a prime minister) and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2016 to 2021.

She has been the National League for Democracy (NLD) chairperson since 2011, having previously served as general secretary from 1988 to 2011. She was instrumental in Myanmar’s 2010 transition from a military junta to partial democracy.

5. Deng Xiaoping

Deng was a very influential Chinese revolutionary leader, military commander, and statesman. He served as the paramount leader of the People’s Republic of China between December 1978 and November 1989.

Born on 6th May 1918, Sheikh Zayed was an Emirati politician, statesman, and philanthropist. He served as the first president of the United Arab Emirates from 1971 to his death in 2004.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan is highly credited to be the founding father and the huge influence of uniting seven Emirates in the UAE. Sheikh Zayed was also the ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1966 to his death.

Chung-hee was a renowned South Korean politician who previously served as an art general. He also served as the President of South Korea for 18 years, from 1961 to 1979 when he was assassinated.

Park Chung-hee was an unelected military strongman who later became the third President of South Korea. His reign saw a series of economic reforms which later led to rapid economic growth and industrialization.

8. Akio Morita

Morita Akio was a Japanese entrepreneur who cofounded Sony with Masaru Ibuka. He started with a shop for radio repair in the bombed-out Store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.

Ibuka’s venture interested him and he chose to join him in Tokyo after getting funding from Morita’s father. The two founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha, the forerunners of Sony Corporation. Akio contributed more to the technological industry of Asia.

9. Sheik Hasina

The daughter of the founding father and first Bangladesh president, Sheikh Hasina is a politician who has served as the prime minister of Bangladesh since January 2009. Sheikh Hasina is the longest-serving prime minister in the history of Bangladesh for over 19 years. Her influence in Asia is renowned for both its positives and negatives.

10. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Sheikh Mohammed oversaw Dubai’s transformation into a global city. He also established a number of government-owned enterprises such as Emirates Airline, DP World, and the Jumeirah Group.

Sheikh Mohammed also oversaw the creation of a technology park, a free economic zone, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, the Dubai International Finance Centre, the Palm Islands, and the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. 11. King Bhumibol Adulyadej

Bhumibol who was conferred with the title of King was the 9th monarch of Thailand. He descended from the Chakri dynasty, titled Rama IX. King Bhumibol reigned from 9th June 1946 to his death in 2016. 13. Ho Chi Minh

Chi Minh served as the Prime Minister of Vietnam for ten years from 1945 to 1955, and President after his role as PM until his death in 1969. He is a great Vietnamese revolutionary and statesman.

Tata is the head of the charitable trusts that are owned by the Tata Group. He is one of the largest philanthropists in the world. His major achievement and influence is the donation of around 60-65% of his income to charity.

15. Abul A’la Maududi

Abul was an Islamic scholar, Islamist ideologue, Muslim philosopher, jurist, historian, journalist, activist, and scholar who worked in British India. He later lived in Pakistan after partitioning from British India.

His numerous works, which “covered a range of disciplines such as Qur’anic exegesis, hadith, law, philosophy, and history,” were written in Urdu but then translated into English, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Burmese, Malayalam, and many other languages. He sought to revive Islam, and to propagate what he understood to be “true Islam”. His influence was felt during his time and helped in shaping the continent.

Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu famously known as Mother Teresa was an Albanian-Indian Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity. She was born in the Ottoman Empire but spent most of her life in India.

Mother Teresa was not only an influential personality in Asia but also in the world. Her work with charity and helping people across the world was her major strength which helped shape the lives of many.

17. Hu Shih

Hu was a diplomat, essayist, literary scholar, philosopher, and politician from China. In his advocacy for the use of written vernacular Chinese, Hu is widely regarded today as a critical contributor to Chinese liberalism and language reform.

He was a key figure in the May Fourth Movement, a leader in China’s New Culture Movement, the president of Peking University, and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature in 1939. He had many interests in literature, philosophy, history, textual criticism, and pedagogy. He was also a well-known redology scholar who held the famous Jiaxu manuscript until his death.

The third longest-serving non-royal head of state in the 20th century, Kim Il-sung was a Korean politician. He was also the founder of North Korea which he ruled from the establishment of the country from 1949 to his death in 1994.

Kim had both negative and positive influence in Asia with the negatives being the invasion of South Korea. However, under his leadership, North Korea had a centrally planned economy as he helped to build the country in the right way.

19. Ban Ki-moon

Ban is a South Korean politician and diplomat who served as the United Nations’ eighth Secretary-General from 2007 to 2016. Before his appointment to the UN, he had served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade in his home country from 2004 to 2006.

21. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Widely known as Bangabandhu, Sheikh Mujibur was a Bangladeshi politician, statesman, and founding leader of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, he is constitutionally referred to as the Father of the Nation who declared independence.

His major influence was felt when he led the country into gaining independence from Pakistani rule. He also led to the transformation of East Pakistan’s state apparatus, armed forces, judiciary, and bureaucracy making it an independent state.

23. Abdul Sattar Edhi

Born on 28th February 1928, Abdul was one of the major influential personalities in Pakistan and Asia. He was a humanitarian, philanthropist, and ascetic who founded the Edhi Foundation.

The Edhi Foundation runs the world’s largest volunteer ambulance. It also has various homeless shelters, animal shelters, rehabilitation centers, and orphanages across Pakistan which have helped many people.

24. Amartya Sen

Kumar Sen is an Indian economist and philosopher who has lived and worked in the United Kingdom and the United States since 1972. 28. Shinzo Abe

The longest-serving prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe was a renowned Japanese politician who was a major influence in Asia. Bandial is Pakistan’s Chief Justice, and he was at the center of the country’s political turmoil. The turmoil that was experienced in Pakistan resulted in the ouster of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government.

When Khan dissolved Parliament in April 2022, Bandial ruled that it was “unconstitutional” and overturned Khan’s decision. 38. Peng Shuai

The first Chinese tennis player to be ranked the world number 1 double player by the WTA, Peng is a renowned retired Chinese tennis player whose influence is felt in Asia and worldwide. She is also an activist who spearheads the rights of women after she came out and revealed that she was sexually harassed.

39. Hoda Khamosh

Hoda is an Afghan women’s rights activist and educator who grew up during the American occupation of her country. Before the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, she worked to promote education and women’s empowerment.

Khamosh was forced to flee her country after the Taliban killed her mother and sister. She was one of six women invited to a Taliban conference in Oslo, Norway, in February 2022.

At the conference, Khamosh advocated for the release of Tamana Zaryabi Paryani and Parawana Ibrahimkhel. Two women activists went missing after participating in a series of anti-Taliban protests. Her influence is widely appreciated.

A Burmese politician and retired General in the Myanmar Army, Thein served as the 8th president of Myanmar from 2011 to 2016. He is widely considered a reformist leader in the post-junta government.

Students from low-income families will receive three years of free or low-cost education from the non-profit college.

Muhammad Yunus (born on 28th June 1940) is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and civil society leader who founded the Grameen Bank and pioneered the concepts of microcredit and microfinance.

The loans distributed by Yunus and co are given to entrepreneurs who are unable to obtain traditional bank loans due to financial constraints. Yunus and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to create economic and social development from below” through microcredit.

Lee Shau-kee’s Foundation made donations of more than HK$20 million to the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity. In 2007, he also donated HK$500 million to the University of Hong Kong and HK$400 million to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

He also made a donation to a site in Yuen Long to the charity organization Po Leung Kuk in 2015. This was to enable the building of Hong Kong’s most prominent youth hostel. These units were to be leased to young people between the ages of 18 and 30.

92. Ela Ramesh Bhatt

Ela Ramesh Bhatt was an Indian activist and cooperative organizer who founded the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA) in 1972. She served as the general secretary of SEWA from 1972 to 1996.

Bhatt was a trained lawyer active in the international labor, cooperative, women’s, and micro-finance movements. Her influence was visible as she received numerous national and international awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1977). She also received the Right Livelihood Award (1984) for “assisting home-based producers to organize for their welfare and self-respect,” and the Padma Bhushan (1986).

Popularly known as P. Chidambaram, he is an Indian politician and lawyer who is also a Member of Parliament.
