It is a nice looking building with great architectural design. The RA Presidential Palace was designed in 1951 and was meant to be the Council of Ministers of the Armenian Soviet Republic. Later it was serving as the building of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of Armenia.
It is located at 26/1 Baghramyan Avenue right across from the Baghramyan metro station, in Yerevan. It is also known as the Presidential Residence.
1. The Palace Was Designed By Mark Grigorian
Historians tell us that the building was designed by Mark Grigorian, a famous architectural designer at the time, as the premises for the Council of Ministers of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. It was completed in 1951.
It served as the residence of the president of Armenia from 11 November 1991 until 9 April 2018, when Armenia was officially turned into parliamentary republic, and the building became the official residence of the prime minister. The president’s residence was moved to Mashtots Avenue.
On 8 November 2018, the Armenian government approved an initiative to relocate the prime minister’s residence to Government House 1 and reallocate the building on Baghramyan Avenue 26 again as the president’s residence.
Initially, the edifice designed in 1951 was a two-story building, which later underwent reconstruction, and at the time occupied area of 2720m2. The first floor area of 338m2 and 10m height is a reception area, with detached reception halls.
2. The Building Was Later Reconstructed According To The Design Developed By The Arm Project Institute
Again 1987, the building underwent reconstruction according to the design developed by the Arm Project Institute. The edifice was augmented with two 10 m wide and 6 m long three-story structures. After the reconstruction, the area of the structure totals 4470 m2. The façade of the edifice is built of yellowy tuff.
With the establishment of the Second Armenian Republic in 1992, the building was transformed into the Presidential Palace, which still stands upto today.
3. It Is Also One Of Yerevan Historical And Cultural Immobile Monument.
By decision of the Government of Armenia, in 2004 26 Baghramian Ave was included in the State Registry of Yerevan Historical and Cultural Immobile Monuments as a monument of state significance. This is a remarkable achievement Considering Armenia just got its independence in 1992.
4. Currently, The Building is A Four-Storey Structure
In 2009-2010, by the design of the Distinguished Architect of the Republic of Armenia Narek Sarkissian a four-story structure was built along the axis of the main building to serve as administrative unit which covers the area of 3150.0 m2. The outer walls of the structure are covered with yellowy petrosilex and travertine.
The entire first floor and part of the second floor serve as reception areas with separate halls. The rest of the building serves as administrative area.
5. The Honor Guard Performs Duties At The Residence
Since 2018, the Honor Guard of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia has performed guard duty at the residence. This is a military unit of Armed Forces of Armenia that performs protocol tasks for high-ranking officials at the Presidential Palace and the Prime Minister’s Residence.
Considered as a very important event in the country. The gates to the residence are usually open to visitors on weekends and for a couple hours on weekdays.
6. It Is Used As A Hosting Ground For High Profile Dignitaries
The Presidential Palace is the huge home of the President of the Republic of Armenia and serves as the hosting grounds for the President of Armenia when receiving guests. The building has been renovated and expanded over the years. The building is registered on the State Registry of Yerevan Historical and Cultural Monuments.
It has been visited by high profile dignitaries from across the world. In 2012, then U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave a speech at the Presidential Palace. From the street, it’s actually not a tremendously impressive building. But be sure to at least take a quick look when you’re walking by.
7. The palace had been destroyed but the palace was rebuilt and renovated
Nice looking building with great architecture from 1950s, a residence of President of Republics of Armenia. The building is bigger than it appears from the street, and you can’t get inside of the building or the territory. This is the place where all official guests visiting Armenia are greeted.
8. It Hosted Guests During The 6Th Pan-Armenian Games
On August 3 the President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan received the organizers, sponsors and honorary guests of the 6-th Pan-Armenian Summer Games. Prior to the reception held in honor of the guests, there took place an award ceremony at the Presidential Palace.
During the event, a group of persons were awarded the Letter of Acknowledgment of the President of the Republic of Armenia for their active involvement in the preparation and execution of the 6th Pan Armenian Games. It was presided over by the President himself. An important event in the history of the country.
9. It Has A Demonstration Area That Features Works of Art From Various Renowned Armenian Artists
The demonstration area of the palace features works of art from various renowned Armenian artists that can be viewed by visitors. Some of the artists whose works are exhibited include Panos Terlemizian, Hovhannes Ayvazovski, Gevork Bashinjaghian, Martiros Sarian, Panos Terlemizian, and Hakop Hakopian.
10. The Chapel of the Presidential palace
Sections of the palace on Baghramyan Avenue 26/1 as they were used before reallocation of the building to the president include: The Entrance Hall, The Green Chamber, The Circular Chamber, The Gilded Chamber, The Grand Hall, The Small Hall, The Blue Room, The Meeting Room, The Fireplace Chamber and the White Room, The Conference Hall, and the Presidential Office.
Adjacent to the original building is a newer part of the Palace. It contains a Conference Room, a Meeting Room and the President’s office.
