The History Museum of Armenia is a museum located in Armenia with departments of Archaeology, Numismatics, Ethnography, Modern History and Restoration found in it. It has a national collection of 400,000 objects and was founded in 1920.

Located on the Republic Square in Yerevan it is regarded as Armenia’s national museum and is financially supported by the state. The state also owns both the collection and the building.It is regarded as one of the most important properties of the Armenian government. 

The museum carries out conservation and restoration work and publishes works on Armenian architecture, archaeology, ethnography, and history. They also have published a series of reports on archaeological excavations since 1948.

The History Museum of Armenia was formed using the collections of the Armenian Ethnographical Association of the Caucasus, the Nor Nakhijevan Museum of Armenian Antiquities, the Museum of Antiquities of Ani, and the Vagharshapat Repository of Ancient Manuscripts. The original collection numbered 15,289 objects.

The History Museum of Armenia houses interesting collections from the past for example there is a collection of 3rd and 2nd millennium BC bronze items, or a collection of Miletian, Greek-Macedonian, Seleucid and Parthian, Roman, Sasanid, Byzantine, Arabic, and Seljuk coins circulated in Armenia.

The collection also included coins, weapons, pottery, tools, ceramics and clothing. It also contains findings from the archaeological sites of Garni, Artashat, and Oshakan, specific to the transformation of Hellenistic culture in Armenia. 

5.The museum also collaborates with Armenian colleges to organize guided tours

For many years the museum collaborated with Armenian colleges and QSI International School within the program “Know Your Country”, organize guided tours for the children of border regions, and elaborate new projects to popularize the history, culture and art. 

The History Museum of Armenia has experience on working with local volunteers, as students from different Armenian universities take part in different events to help the staff to organize meetings, museum holidays and special programs.

The general entrance fee costs 1000 Dram, with several exceptions for students and pensioners who should pay only 300 dram. A guided visit is available in 4 foreign languages; Russian, English, French and German.This visit will cost you 5000 Dram, while a guided visit in Armenian will cost 3000 Dram.

If you would like to get to the museum without paying for the ticket, make sure you go there on the last Saturday of each month. The entrance is free on the second Friday of each month for school students and teachers accompanying them.

The museum has several departments included; Archeology Department which is one of the main departments of the museum. The Collection includes collections of the Armenian Highland from the Old Stone Age to the 15th Century AD. Numismatics Department where you can see gold, silver and copper coins.

New and Modern History Department. The collections of this department include documents, photographs, flags and seals of the 17th-21th centuries. Ethnography Department. Here you will see the ethnographic collection, presents the17th-20th century culture, folk lifestyle decorative art of the historical-ethnographical areas in Armenia.
