The term alive in this scenario is used loosely. The Floralis Genérica is alive only in the sense that it is equipped with an automated electrical system that gives it motion.

The Floralis Genérica opens and closes its petals automatically depending on the time of the day. At exactly 8 every morning, the sculpture opens its petals. The petals close at sunset every other day using a schedule that is adjusted according to the season in effect.

However, on four special nights of the year, the Floralis Genérica does not close its petals and remains agape. These are the nights of May 25th, September 21st, December 24th, and December 31st. On these nights the sculpture remains open keeping Buenos Aires in bloom throughout the night.

In 2010, the electrical and hydraulic system that was employed to enable the sculpture to open and close was disabled. This was done to prevent the sculpture from damaging which meant it remained open for five years.

This was necessary since as Catalano himself had admitted, one of the petals had been installed incorrectly during assembly. The repair took five years and in 2015, the full functionality of the hydraulic system was restored allowing it to open and close.

7. The Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina Company Constructed the Sculpture

The Fábrica Argentina de Aviones SA (FAdeA) was responsible for bringing Catalano’s sculpture design to life. The company was privatized in the 1990s to Lockheed Martin and conducted the construction of the sculpture as such.

On completion of the Floralis Genérica, the company provided the city with a 25-year warranty. However, issues were detected with the system in 2010 which needed t to be fixed.

However, at the time, the company was not private anymore and the Argentine government had taken it over. This, therefore, meant that the necessary repairs were delayed.

8. The Name of The Sculpture Has Meaning

Eduardo Catalano named the giant sculpture Floralis Genérica for a reason. The word Floralis is the scientific name for all flowers. Which is fitting as it is made in the image of a flower.

The term Genérica on the other hand arises from the concept of “gender”. This indicates that the sculpture represents all flowers n the world.

Through this magnificent piece of work, Catalano attempted to show the dynamic relationship between the modern world and nature.

9. The Floralis Genérica Glows at Night

When the sculpture closes at night, it emits a reddish light from inside which illuminates the park. When it blossoms, the light turns off, marking a new dawn. Catalano once said that the flower “is a synthesis of all the flowers and, at the same time, a hope reborn every day at opening.”
