It sits on the top of the hill of Montmartre &#8211; one of the highest points in the city &#8211; overlooking a sea of grey rooftops. When the weather is nice (and honestly even if it isn\u2019!), there are throngs of people that gather outside the basilica to enjoy the view, chat with friends or listen to the live <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-music-stores-of-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">music<\/a> that seems to always be playing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The outside of the church is unique, as it is made of white self-cleaning stone, which is much different than the other gothic churches in Â鶹APP. The inside of the basilica is not any less impressive, with France\u2019s largest mosaic decorating the ceiling. The Sacr\u00e9 Coeur is my personal favorite church in Â鶹APP architecturally for it\u2019s unique exterior and interior design, and for it\u2019s great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-10-things-to-do-in-montmartre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a> location. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">While the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/moulin-rouge-to-the-sacre-coeur-the-perfect-walking-route-through-montmartre-with-a-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/a> is a beautiful monument to visit, it is not without it\u2019s controversies! From it\u2019s inception, the basilica has raised questions and caused problems amongst Â鶹APPians. Prussia was a kingdom that was controlled by Germany, and in 1870 was at war with France. In September 1870, Prussian forces had captured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris\/all-you-need-to-know-about-georges-eugene-haussmann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Napoleon III<\/a>, Emperor of the Second French Empire. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Prussians invaded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris\/top-ceramics-classes-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a> despite National Guard soldiers that attempted to defend the city. These soldiers were <i>known<\/i> for their radical tactics. Despite their efforts, the Prussians overtook Â鶹APP in January 1871. Adolphe Thiers, the new leader of the French government since Napoleon III had been captured, signed an armistice with the Prussians. He agreed to call off the French army, but did not call off the National Guard. Remember this, it\u2019s important!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As I\u2019ve mentioned, the National Guard soldiers were pretty hardcore. By the time March 1871 rolled around, they had had enough of the control of the Prussians. The Â鶹APP Commune was formed! The Â鶹APP Commune was a radical and revolutionary group of National Guard soldiers that wanted to kick the Prussians out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-4-places-to-buy-hand-blown-glass-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a> so that they could get their country back. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">On March 18, 1871, a few Commune National Guard soldiers killed two French army generals, stating that they refused to be ruled by the new French government that was in cahoots with the Prussian forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26433\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/31272633153_747ceab35c_z.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26433\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/31272633153_747ceab35c_z.jpg\" alt=\"Hotel\" width=\"640\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/31272633153_747ceab35c_z.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/31272633153_747ceab35c_z-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The H\u00f4tel de Ville of Â鶹APP burnt after the conflicts with the Commune by Photographic Heritage &#8211; Flickr<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Â鶹APP Commune governed the city for a little over 3 months, from March 18-May 28, 1871. The Commune was dismantled by the French government, by force. From May 21-28, the French army battled with the Commune in Â鶹APP. It is called <i>La semaine sanglante, <\/i>or The Bloody Week in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-english-sayings-that-dont-work-in-french\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English<\/a>, for it\u2019s violence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">By the time everything was said and done, the French Army had succeeded in taking back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-10-interesting-facts-about-paris-during-the-roman-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a> from the revolutionary Commune. Many, many lives were lost and Â鶹APP was half in ruins. The Tuileries Palace was destroyed, in addition to the H\u00f4tel de Ville. Houses were burned, debris filled the streets and the extreme violence had left an eerie feeling in the air. Because you need to have that background information before I can tell you about the controversy surrounding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/10-reasons-to-visit-the-basilica-of-sacre-coeur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">After The Bloody Week, the wounds from the Â鶹APP Commune were still fresh. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris\/beneath-paris-half-the-city-is-underground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a> was a divided city: those who sided with the Commune, and those who sided with the French government. The Â鶹APP Commune was supported mostly by the working class that yearned for a democratic republic in France. So, when those workers had to get <i>back<\/i> to work for a government they no longer liked or trusted, you can imagine that tensions were pretty high. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1873, the National Assembly voted to erect a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/lisbon\/a-look-at-the-beautiful-churches-in-lisbon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">church<\/a> on one of the highest points of the city. The reason? The church would atone for the crimes committed by the Commune. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/all-about-paris-school-of-fine-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Â鶹APP<\/a> is suddenly divided even deeper, with support for the basilica coming from the Catholic Church, and royalists that were against the Â鶹APP Commune. On the other side were socialists, revolutionaries and democrats. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The land where the future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paul-abadie-the-architect-of-sacre-coeur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/a> would stand was seized from its owners. This obviously didn\u2019t go over too well for the people that had their property taken from them! In 1880, one debate went so far as to call the construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-construction-of-the-sacre-coeur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/a> an incitement to civl war! French writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-things-you-should-know-about-emile-zola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00c9mile Zola<\/a> was very against the construction. He famously called it \u201cthe basilica of the ridiculous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Thanks to the many supporters and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-parisian-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">architects<\/a> involved, plans for construction moved forward, even if at a slow pace. Sometimes called the &#8220;white elephant&#8221; of Â鶹APP, there are still many that do not support its existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2013, amid the elections for the mayor of Â鶹APP, a Communist candidate named Ian Brossat, said that he did not like what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-is-the-best-way-to-get-to-the-sacre-coeur-in-montmartre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/a> stood for, and if he was elected he would close it down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">For Brossat, like for many others at the time of its contruction, he sees the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-10-fun-facts-about-the-sacre-coeur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/a> as a symbol of punishment for the Â鶹APP Commune. Brossat supports the revolutionary motives of the Commune, and he commends them for standing up against the bourgeoisie ruling class at the time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2017, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-3-fun-facts-about-lecole-du-chat-in-montmartre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a> resident expressed his longing to have the basilica torn down, for the dishonor it gave to those who lost their lives for the Â鶹APP Commune. The comment emerged when the mayor of the 18th arrondissement (where you\u2019ll find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-5-reasons-the-montmartre-cemetery-is-so-special\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a>) decided to propose a budget plan in which the residents of the neighborhood would get a say in what their arrondissement spent its money on. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26441\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/www.maxpixel.net-sacre-coeur-paris-montmartre-church-france-2186251.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26441\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/www.maxpixel.net-sacre-coeur-paris-montmartre-church-france-2186251.jpg\" alt=\"Sacr\u00e9-Coeur Â鶹APP \" width=\"640\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/www.maxpixel.net-sacre-coeur-paris-montmartre-church-france-2186251.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/www.maxpixel.net-sacre-coeur-paris-montmartre-church-france-2186251-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sacr\u00e9-Coeur, Â鶹APP &#8211; Max Pixel<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The mayor dismissed the idea, but as you can see there are still a lot of mixed feelings in Â鶹APP about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-restaurants-near-sacre-coeur-basilica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/a>. It seems like you either love it or you hate it, and chances are if you love it unquestioningly, you probably don\u2019t know the whole story of the church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As I mentioned, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-at-the-sacred-heart-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/a> is one of my favorite churches in Â鶹APP for its architecture, but after doing the research for this article, I\u2019m not totally sure I support its construction either! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Those that are on the same page of Brossat and that disgruntled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-10-places-to-buy-art-in-montmartre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a> resident yearn for the revolutionary Â鶹APP of the past. While it can seem exciting to think about Â鶹APP in the state, it\u2019s important to remember the violence and death that come along with revolution. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re a tourist visiting Â鶹APP, or someone doing some research before their Â鶹APP trip, I\u2019m willing to bet that you didn\u2019t know the controversial side of the Sacr\u00e9 Coeur! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There are initiatives in recent years to memorialise the Â鶹APP Commune rather than vilify it. There are talks of changing metro stations to include the Commune (the Council of Â鶹APP suggested a station called Belleville-La Commune in 2015), or perhaps a rue named after Louise-Michel, a woman instrumental in defending the Commune. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019m a firm believer in letting both sides of a story be told, and I think this is becoming more and more important as more time goes on.
