The first is probably the most famous cemetery in Â鶹APP, and for good reason! The P\u00e8re Lachaise is massive in size, and houses some greats such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-way-to-find-jim-morrisons-grave-in-pere-lachaise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Morrison<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-way-to-find-edith-piafs-grave-in-pere-lachaise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edith Piaf<\/a>. In total, there are over 1 million people buried in the P\u00e8re Lachaise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Montparnasse Cemetery is more similar to the Montmartre Cemetery in terms of set up: the two are often compared for their romantic layout and rambling paths. Inside the Montparnasse Cemetery, you will find over 40,000 graves. Here, you can pay homage to greats like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/charles-baudelaires-life-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Baudelaire<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris\/how-simone-de-beauvoir-changed-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simone de Beauvoir<\/a>, who is buried with her life partner Jean-Paul Sartre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">But, enough about these other cemeteries, let\u2019s continue on with the Montmartre Cemetery! The streets were quite dirty, apartments were crowded and there was always the burning question: <i>what to do with the bodies when people died?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In the early 19th century, local parish cemeteries were beginning to become more and more crowded. In response to this, the city of Â鶹APP decided to open up four cemeteries that were, at the time, located outside the city\u2019s walls. They were the P\u00e8re Lachaise in the east, the Passy Cemetery in the west, the Montparnasse Cemetery in the south, and the Montmartre Cemetery in the north.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The cemetery officially began accepting bodies on January 1, 1825. It was originally named <i>La Cimeti\u00e8re des Grandes Carri\u00e8res<\/i> (Cemetery of the Large Quarries in English).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. Understandably so, as the Montmartre Cemetery is considered to be one of the largest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/10-reasons-to-visit-renoirs-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gardens<\/a> in Â鶹APP! The area of the cemetery is nearly 11 hectares. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There are over 780 trees in the Montmartre Cemetery, ranging from maple trees and lime trees to chestnuts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Not only is there a ton of greenery to take in, the headstones and sculptures surrounding the graves are really unique and beautiful. Many different styles of art can be found within the cemetery, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/art-nouveau-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Nouveau<\/a>, Egyptian, Gothic and Renaissance, to name a few!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>4. The fact that the French population revolted against their monarchs <i>and won<\/i> is something that really stands out for me in French <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/history-and-tradition-of-french-cheese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">history<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As I started to learn more and more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-the-french-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revolution<\/a>, something I asked myself was &#8220;where did they put all of the bodies after they were guillotined?&#8221; Am I weird? The short answer is yes, but I think it\u2019s a legitimate question! Well, I found my answer when I started to research this article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Montmartre Cemetery was created in an old quarry located outside of Â鶹APP. This turned out to be an ideal spot for the mass grave needed for all of the beheaded nobles. During the Reign of Terror, from 1793-1794, about 40,000 people were killed. They ultimately were put to rest in the Montmartre Cemetery!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Ironically, the Royal Executioner of France, who was responsible for beheading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-famous-french-kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">King<\/a> Louis XVI is also buried in the Montmartre Cemetery. His name is Charles Henri Sanson, and seeing as though executing was something of a family trade, his son Henri beheaded Marie Antoinette after being sworn in as an executioner in 1778. Talk about things coming full circle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>5.
