And not long ago either, they were still erect during the better part of the 20th century. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The windmills of Â鶹APP were imperative to the successful order of daily life during these years in history. The only remnants are the ones still standing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-10-bakeries-in-montmartre-and-what-to-order-where\/\">Montmartre<\/a>, north of the city center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Their reputation and longevity precedes them. The Montmartre windmills are now a tourist attraction of their own; here are 5 things you need to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">1. There are Technically Four Surviving Windmills, Not Two<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s2\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a> through Montmartre you might hear your guide make refer to the \u201cMoulin de la Galette\u201d. While this may sound like a reference to a single landmark, it is actually the collective name used to refer to the two windmills still standing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/10-interesting-facts-about-the-i-love-you-wall-in-montmartre\/\">Montmartre<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Moulin Radet and the Moulin de la Galette are the two main windmills that are still brining tourists to their sites. This takes the windmill count in Montmartre to three. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the very base of the Montmartre hill we can find the fourth surviving windmill of this district. I think its earned the right to be part of the long standing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/how-to-choose-the-best-airbnb-in-montmartre\/\">Montmartre<\/a> windmill club, don\u2019t you?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">2<\/span><span class=\"s1\">. They Aren\u2019t All Open to the Public<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">While all of the acknowledged windmills can be publicly viewed, only three of them can technically still be entered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The Moulin de la Galette holds its original home on Rue Lepic, however since being partially restored in the late 20th century it is now built on private land. This one is still a publicly accessible unit that visitors can go inside of. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Of course, the windmills at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/5-historical-facts-about-the-cemetery-of-montmartre\/\">Montmartre Cemetery<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-near-moulin-rouge\/\">Moulin Rouge<\/a> are both public properties and visiting these is as easy as an afternoon stroll through the property. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">3. They Have Been Painted by Many of the Great Artists of Montmartre <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back in the artistic heyday of Montmartre, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-parisian-artists-of-the-lost-generation\/\">artists<\/a> from all over Europe flocked to Â鶹APP in hopes of making it big, the windmills became the unofficial muses for the painters in this village. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Van Gogh, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-interesting-facts-about-the-french-painter-renoir\/\">Renoir<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-5-fun-facts-about-picassos-studio\/\">Picasso<\/a> and <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Toulouse<\/span><span class=\"s5\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s4\">Lautrec all took turns using the windmills as features in their paintings. It currently hangs in the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay in the city center. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">4. Chef Antoine Heerah Has Built a Restaurant Inside One of Them<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s7\">As mentioned, the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Moulin Radet is still accessible by the public. It is the current site of one of Chef Antoine Heerah\u2019s many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-things-to-know-about-parisian-men\/\">Â鶹APPian<\/a> restaurants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s6\">Try not let this confuse you, but the restaurant built underneath the Moulin Radet is named <i>Le Moulin de la Galette<\/i>.
