It was a big year for the people of France who were very recently coming out of years of warfare in the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the 27th of February in 1915 the beloved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-near-moulin-rouge\/\">Moulin Rouge<\/a> was completely devoured in a fire that ranged through the entire premises. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The establishment was completely shut down for six long years during which rebuilding took place. It reopened just after World War 1 in 1921. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">2. It Was the First Building in Â鶹APP to Receive Electricity <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Walking through the streets of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-bars-in-pigalle\/\">Pigalle<\/a> today you\u2019d never imagine that this village once existed in complete darkness . <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The original Moulin Rouge was the first property in Â鶹APP to receive electricity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The red lighting features were designed by a man named Adolphe L\u00e9on Willette. The Moulin Rouge Used to Feature an Opium Den<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Much of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-cabaret-shows-paris\/\">cabaret\u2019s<\/a> early success had to do with the fact that this was one of the only places in Â鶹APP where one could enjoy both absinthe and opium as desired. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">In the year of opening, the owners Oller and Zidler came across a giant plaster elephant at a local exhibition. They purchase it and moved it into the garden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-choose-a-cafe-in-paris\/\">cafe<\/a> of the Moulin Rouge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The inside was transformed into an opium den featuring belly dancers and other feasts for the senses. They charged people a single franc to get inside. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">4. The Can-Can Was Invented in the Moulin Rouge by Mistake<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This iconic dance move was indeed invented in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-near-moulin-rouge\/\">Moulin Rouge<\/a>, that much is true. However just how this dance came to be will probably blow your mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Can-Can came about as a result of the dancers having to repeatedly kick at overstepping men who would reach up to the stage in attempt to touch them inappropriately. To celebrate this historic event,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/what-you-need-to-know-about-edith-piaf\/\"> Edith Piaf<\/a> agreed to perform at the Moulin Rouge a few nights later. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She introduced a new performer to the patrons of the cabaret, Yves Montand. Yves performed alongside her throughout the evening and it was a true moment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-history-of-le-chabanais-paris-most-luxurious-brothel\/\">history<\/a> for the club. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">6. The Feather Costumes are Made in Montmartre <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While the elaborate costumes themselves are made by the in-house team at the actual premises, the feathers come from elsewhere in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-10-bakeries-in-montmartre-and-what-to-order-where\/\">Montmartre<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The same family business has been responsible for the sourcing of the Moulin Rouge feathers since 1929. Men Were Allowed to be Dancers at the Moulin Rouge<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They still are!
