WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Au Lapin Agile is an infamous cabaret and bar located in the also infamous Â鶹APPian neighborhood of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/top-10-things-to-do-in-montmartre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a>! You may recognize the name from your wanders through the <i>quartier<\/i>, as it is located just next door to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/5-great-facts-about-the-vineyard-of-montmartre-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clos Montmartre<\/a>, the vineyard nestled in the hills of Montmartre, and the bust of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-interesting-facts-about-popstar-dalida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dalida<\/a>, the famous French pop singer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Have I mentioned how much I love this area of Â鶹APP?! I have had so many lovely days and evenings in this part of the city, and it still feels so magical for me! Montmartre was once a village outside of the Â鶹APP limits, and the neighborhood still gives off that vibe of being a place apart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Between the incredible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/10-beautiful-things-to-find-within-sacre-coeur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacre Coeur<\/a>, the artists\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/10-historical-facts-about-the-place-du-tertre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Place du Tertre<\/a>, and the winding cobblestone streets\u2026Montmartre is just waiting for you to explore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">But, enough about the rest of Montmartre! Au Lapin Agile was once called the Cabaret of Assassins<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_17790\" style=\"width: 411px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lapin_agile.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17790\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lapin_agile.jpg\" alt=\"Au Lapin Agile between 1880 and 1890\" width=\"401\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lapin_agile.jpg 401w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lapin_agile-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Au Lapin Agile between 1880 and 1890 &#8211; WkiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">This cabaret and bar opened it\u2019s doors in 1860 under the name of <i>Au rendez-vous des voleurs, <\/i>or, &#8220;At the rendez-vous of thieves&#8221; in English. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/5-stories-of-failure-from-montmartres-most-successful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a> was a bit of a seedy area at this time in history, and so it doesn\u2019t surprise me that there was a bar named for the thieves that used to hang around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Twenty years later, the name changed to the <i>Cabaret des Assassins. <\/i>There are a few different rumors as to why Au Lapin Agile was named as such<i>.<\/i> One version cites that it was because the walls were covered with paintings and portraits depicting famous murderers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Another version tells the tale of a group of assassins who broke into the bar to rob the place, and ended up killing the owners son in the process. I\u2019ll leave it to you to decide which story you think is true!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>2. Au Lapin Agile was renamed for a sign painted by Andr\u00e9 Gill<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_17792\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lapinagile.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17792\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lapinagile.jpg\" alt=\"Reproduction of Le Lapin Agile\" width=\"180\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reproduction of Le Lapin Agile by Andr\u00e9 Gill &#8211; WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">One thing that I can tell you for sure, is the cabaret gets its current name from a sign which was painted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-artists-who-lived-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">artist<\/a> Andr\u00e9 Gill in 1875. The sign features a rabbit with a top hat jumping out of a large pan holding a bottle of wine, all with the greatest of ease!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Once the cabaret debuted the sign, many Montmartre residents began to call the place &#8220;Gill\u2019s Rabbit&#8221;, or <i>Le Lapin \u00e0 Gill<\/i> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-french-sayings-that-dont-work-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">French<\/a>. This quickly morphed into <i>Au Lapin Agile<\/i>, which is quite fitting as this translates to &#8220;The Nimble Rabbit.&#8221; That\u2019s pretty appropriate as you\u2019d have to be a nimble rabbit in order to jump out of a saucepan with a bottle of wine in your hand, don\u2019t you agree?! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">I love this play on words!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. Preserved in Montmartre museum &#8211; WikiCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As you may or may not know, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-guide-to-exploring-montmartre-at-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a> was the stomping grounds for artists in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Rent was cheap, there was ample space for studios, and who wouldn\u2019t want to be surrounded by other artists in order to gain inspiration?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Heavyweights such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-fascinating-facts-about-picasso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pablo Picasso<\/a>, Amedeo Modigliani, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-fun-facts-about-van-gogh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vincent Van Gogh<\/a> and Maurice Utrillo were all known to spend quite a few evenings here, mostly discussing &#8220;the meaning of art.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The artists were joined by other Montmartre residents, some down on their luck folks (tariffs were cheap!), and even gangsters and pimps were known to come to the bar to enjoy a few. In the mid-twentieth century, even students from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/10-things-to-see-in-the-latin-quarter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Latin Quarter<\/a> made their way up to Au Lapin Agile to soak in the interesting vibes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>4. The story is a &#8220;what if?&#8221; tale of Picasso and scientist Albert Einstein meeting at the cabaret. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>5. You can catch a live music show nearly every night at Au Lapin Agile<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Today, Au Lapin Agile continues to celebrate French music. The interior is just as you may imagine, a bit dark, a bit moody, with wooden tables and a piano under a spotlight. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The bar tends to become very crowded, as it is famous for Â鶹APPians and tourists alike! I definitely recommend reserving a table before you show up, to avoid waiting outside.
