It is the crowning glory that sits at the very top of Montmartre hill in the 18th arrondissement, attracting millions of visitors per year as it hovers over the French capital. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-unmissable-midnight-strolls-to-take-in-paris\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a> is home to many a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/a-list-of-beautiful-churches-in-paris-you-didnt-know\/\">beautiful church<\/a>. In the center you\u2019ll find the incredible structure that is Notre Dame. Saint-S\u00e9verin and the Russian church are another two of my favorites. Saint-\u00c9tienne-du-Mont is another wonder that is often overlooked by travelers to Â鶹APP. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is something undoubtably special about the Sacre Coeur, however. Something incredibly whimsical and fairytale-like. Many people report excessive haggling from vendors and artists putting a damper on the experience and suggesting that that church is perhaps best viewed from a distance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Having made the journey up a number of times I must strongly disagree.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-restaurants-near-sacre-coeur-basilica\/\"> Sacre Coeur<\/a> is undoubtably best viewed from up close and inside of the vicinity. A wonder of a landmark in Â鶹APP; here are 10 reasons to pay it a visit. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"s4\">1. The Architecture at the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Basilica of Sacre Coeur<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unbeknownst to some, the same architect behind Notre Dame was responsible for the construction of the Scare Coeur as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1875 a man named<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paul-abadie-the-architect-of-sacre-coeur\/\"> Paul Abadie<\/a> began construction of the landmark after having won the competition held by the city of Â鶹APP to find the man for the job. While Abadie was the frontman in the beginning of the job, he unfortunately didn\u2019t live to see the church\u2019s completion. The stone for the structure was taken from the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Ch\u00e2teau-Landon quarries in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/visit-paris-in-your-20s\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a> that calcifies under wet weather conditions \u2014 this acts as a natural bleach and is responsible for the chalk tone of the entire church. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The interior is everything you\u2019d expect from a lavish basilica in Europe. The symmetry of the archways are what makes the inside so mind blowing. There are also hand painted murals that make up biblical scenes across the ceiling, in which you can lose your thoughts for hours on end. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s3\">2<\/span><span class=\"s7\">. The View from the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Basilica of Sacre Coeur<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the biggest motivations for making the trek up to the church on the hill is the view that comes with it. This part of the 18th arrondissement towers over the city of Â鶹APP, giving one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/where-to-find-the-most-memorable-views-of-paris\/\">panoramic views<\/a> of the south and surrounding arrondissements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even if you aren\u2019t mad about church viewing, this view of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/how-to-decorate-your-paris-apartment\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a> is a very good reason to head to the hilltop. Seeing how each one exists in relation to the rest is super interesting \u2014 you forget just how big this city actually is. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s3\">3<\/span><span class=\"s1\">. Surrounding Montmartre at the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Basilica of Sacre Coeur<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Montmartre is the artists hub of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris-at-night-best-view\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a>. With this comes a certain laid-back, almost carefree, lifestyle through the streets and attractions that make this district was it is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the 19th century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/5-historical-facts-about-the-cemetery-of-montmartre\/\">Montmartre<\/a> was one of the more affordable places to live in Â鶹APP due to its precarious location on the hill of the 18th arrondissement. It was seen as somewhat undesirable and as a result cost of living was considerably cheaper. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cheap rent brings artists, as the saying goes. As you work your way up from the bottom of the hill, near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-bars-in-pigalle\/\">Pigalle<\/a> strip, you\u2019ll pass historic sites such as the Montmartre Museum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-reasons-to-visit-la-maison-rose\/\">La Maison Rose<\/a> and the Cemetery of Montmartre. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Blindly navigating the winding streets that take one up the hill can be confusing. It is sometimes a better idea to join a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\"><span class=\"s9\">free guided walking tour<\/span><\/a> where an experience guide can take you past all the sites and give you the relevant history and information for each. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s3\">4<\/span><span class=\"s7\">. Street Artists at <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Basilica of Sacre Coeur<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One thing you\u2019ll quickly learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/the-best-art-classes-to-take-in-paris\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a> is that wherever large crowds of people are there are street artists following close behind. The foot traffic that the Sacre Coeur attracts means that the surrounding grounds of the church are constantly filled with people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before I go further, let me mention that the beautiful view over Â鶹APP from the top of the hill is accessible both during the day and by night. It is recommended to take a pair of binoculars with if you have access to some. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are many incredible viewpoints around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top-5-artists-who-lived-in-paris\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a> where city views are absolutely unreal. The top of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/3-favourite-places-to-stay-in-montparnasse\/\">Montparnasse Tower<\/a> or, of course, the Eiffel Tower, are two others worth experiencing while in town. None, however, have the same all inclusive view that the dome of the Sacre Coeur is able to offer thanks to its circular foundation. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s3\">7<\/span><span class=\"s1\">. The Sinking House at the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Basilica of Sacre Coeur<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The sinking house is a lot less exciting when you learn that the house itself was never actually sinking in the first place. It\u2019s an illusion; a trick of the eye that creative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-parisian-instagram-accounts-you-need-to-follow\/\">picture takers<\/a> were able to figure out thanks to the unique slope of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/top10\/5-historical-facts-about-the-cemetery-of-montmartre\/\">Montmartre<\/a> hill. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In order to see the house for yourself you\u2019ll have to start at the front entrance of the Sacre Coeur. Move onto the grass and observe the orange building tucked just behind the hill \u2014 <i>that\u2019s<\/i> the sinking house!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Using your camera or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/5-parisian-instagram-accounts-you-need-to-follow\/\">cell phone,<\/a> lay on the ground and tilt the frame until the hill slope appears to be flat and the house appears to be sinking \u2014 <i>voila<\/i>!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s3\">8<\/span><span class=\"s7\">. The Park Behind the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Basilica of Sacre Coeur<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The front side spectacle of the church and the stairs and the grass is a whirlwind of distraction for any first time visitor to the Sacre Coeur. There are ample nooks in which one can curl up with a book or simply bask in the sunlight from one of the benches under the trees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The towers of the Sacre Coeur peek out through the trees of the Parc de la Turlure, giving you a unique angle of the church that not many will make the time to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s3\">9<\/span><span class=\"s7\">. Vendors at the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Basilica of Sacre Coeur<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Similar to the way street artists in Â鶹APP flock to where the crowds are, so too do the street vendors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All through the outside grounds of the Sacre Coeur you\u2019ll encounter entrepreneurial individuals with many an item to sell. These may be in the form of a beaded bracelet, Buddhist prayer card or a homemade CD featuring the work of the optimistic salesman. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While still harmless, these vendors are harder to say no too since the merchandise is already on your person. It\u2019s the age old trick of gifting to someone unexpected and then asking for money at a later stage. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s3\">10<\/span><span class=\"s7\">. The History of the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Basilica of Sacre Coeur<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Sacre Coeur is a historic and iconic part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/best-time-to-visit-paris\/\">Â鶹APP<\/a>.
