I am in my mid 30s now but left Northern Ireland in 2003 on a journey I never expected to last this long.<\/p>\n<p>I was born in Newtownards in County Down. I grew up nearby in Bangor and since then I have lived in about 10 countries, working around the world.<\/p>\n<h4>Why did you start writing <a href=\"http:\/\/dontstopliving.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>dontstopliving<\/strong><\/a>?<\/h4>\n<p>I have always been a writer. I did creative writing at school, college and university. In my spare time I wrote articles for Northern Ireland and AFC Bournemouth football fanzines, editing a fanzine in the late 1990s. I also wrote for the Glentoran Gazette, passed an NVQ in Journalism and wrote for music fanzines during the Britpop era.<\/p>\n<p>While my first passions for writing were in football, politics and music, it was when I started traveling that I decided to convert my hand written notes to an internet blog. From a hostel in Toronto, Canada in 2007, I wrote my first ever online travel blog on the Blogspot platform. I called the blog \u201cDon\u2019t Stop Living\u201d based on the fact that I saw that phrase graffittied onto a High School Wall in Toronto and it fitted my lifestyle ambitions and beliefs at the time \u2013 live every day like it\u2019s the last \u2013 don\u2019t stop living.<\/p>\n<p>So I started the blog in 2007 and it was also inspired by the first three fellow travel bloggers I met \u2013 Cassiano (from Brazil), Lee and Mike (from England). Strangely, neither of those three continued their blogs after 2008, whereas mine continued long and passionately until late 2016.<\/p>\n<h4>Why did you start traveling?<\/h4>\n<p>The truth is I don\u2019t know. I have no idea why I started traveling. But I know I was getting fed up with my mundane life in Northern Ireland around 2001 \u2013 early 2003 so I needed a change.<\/p>\n<p>I had studied politics, history, geography and English at school and college so I guess I always wanted to see more of the world. When I collected Panini football stickers for the 1986 World Cup album, I remember looking at teams like South Korea, Iraq, Mexico and Uruguay and thinking one day I would love to visit those countries.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s say the reason was curiosity and adventure, influenced by football and a repetitive life in my hometown.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710299.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710299.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"867\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710299.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710299-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710299-610x814.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>What&#8217;s special about your blog?<\/h4>\n<p>That it\u2019s ridiculous, it\u2019s unusual, it\u2019s real, it\u2019s honest, it\u2019s me and it\u2019s far and away the most robust travel blog on the internet for the last 10 years. There wasn\u2019t a day that went by where I wasn\u2019t writing something.<\/p>\n<p>What really sets my blog aside from most of the mundane obvious blogs is that I rarely write about over-backpacked places like Thailand, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, etc. They bore the sunshine out of me. You are more likely to find an article on me traipsing through an unknown Polish town like Starogard Gdanski or Biskupiec or discovering a country that \u201cdoesn\u2019t exist\u201d like Uzupis, Adammia or Transnistria or getting a passport stamp in Podjistan or Gorno Badakhshan.<\/p>\n<p>I also write about completely off the wall experiences such as my day playing football in Afghanistan, my \u201cwacaday\u201d trip to Nukus in the Karakalpak desert or getting naked in the snow of Jarvenpaa in Finland. If it\u2019s a town I\u2019ve never heard of, it is much more of a story for me than a popular place.<\/p>\n<p>I am also honest on my blog which means I often expose liars, fakes and phoneys on my posts. There is nothing worse than people who lie to you and disrespect your business and I also hate fake travel blogs.<\/p>\n<h4>What would be your top 3 things to do in any of the European cities that Discover Walks is active in?<\/h4>\n<p>I will talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/london-walking-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In London, I love the pub culture so my advice is a nightly pub crawl experiencing some of the coolest and most random bars in the city. Bars housed in former prisons, a bar in a toilet, a bar with a view and a cheap old school English pub with a grungy rock band. A bit of jazz music off Oxford Street also goes down well of a weekday evening.<\/li>\n<li>Football comes next and my favourite London stadiums are Millwall (the New Den) and Brentford (Griffin Park) \u2013 you can watch the top 5 divisions in England in London so you get to see what English football culture is like on all levels. Whether it\u2019s a posh box at a Chelsea v. Tottenham encounter, a full house at Loftus Road for the QPR v. Brentford derby or a cultured day out watching Barnet or Leyton Orient, it\u2019s a passionate sport amongst Londoners and English people.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, I\u2019ll have to say the canals at Camden. On a Sunday afternoon, you can see hippies hanging out, embark on a river cruise, get a tattoo, eat and drink in the music bars or go cycling past the canals \u2013 nearby Primrose Hill is also a good spot to relax and I wouldn\u2019t rule out Greenwich Park either \u2013 great place!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/20160513_110129.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9822\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/20160513_110129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/20160513_110129.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/20160513_110129-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/20160513_110129-610x458.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Your Top 3 good addresses in Â鶹APP?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t like to give away too many secrets in a city of so much tourism, but my favourite caf\u00e9 in Â鶹APP is on a tranquil street just south of the square of St. Michel. It is called Caf\u00e9 des Arts.<\/li>\n<li>I also love the views from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/montmartre-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a> and a Happy Hour beer at the top can be as little as 2.5 Euros if you\u2019re clever enough to find the bargains!<\/li>\n<li>For a cool district, I like to get away from the normal areas so I spent a few nights at the Young and Happy Hostel in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/left-bank\/\">Latin Quarter<\/a> and I pub crawled the trendy bars with un-nerving aplomb. It was so different and cool here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710287.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710287.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710287.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710287-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/p1710287-610x458.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Your favorite landmark in Â鶹APP?<\/h4>\n<p>For me it\u2019s the Sacr\u00e9 Coeur at the top of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/montmartre-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montmartre<\/a> \u2013 a beautiful church with a splendid view, though as a keen football fan, I also love the Parc des Princes.<\/p>\n<h4>What is your favorite neighborhood in Â鶹APP?<\/h4>\n<p>It might surprise some readers but I like the \u00c9pinay-sur-Seine district. It is far away from the city centre, but easily accessible by bus or train.
