The simplest way to go from the airport to the centre of Â鶹APP is also the quickest: taxis.

When: 24 hours a day

How much: 30 – 50€

How long: 15 – 50 min

From where: South Terminal gate L / West Terminal gate B

How to buy it: wait in the official line at the terminal / if you want to skip the line, you can book a taxi by phone and easily find their reservation numbers online

But taxis are also the most expensive mode of transportation: if you have more time, you should definitely take the bus. The first type of bus is the Orlybus shuttle service.

When: from 6 am to 11:30 pm everyday, except on Friday and Saturday (to 00:30 am); every 15-20 minutes

How much: 7,70€

How long: 25 – 35 minutes

From where: South Terminal gate C / West Terminal gate D

To where: the place Denfert Rochereau

How to buy it: at ticket offices or vending machines in every subway or train stations

Another shuttle exists, which is more expensive but will drive you to more central places in Â鶹APP than the previous one; it’s called the “Bus Direct Â鶹APP Aéroport”:

When: everyday from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm

How much: 12€ / free for under 4

How long: 30-40 min to Montparnasse station, 50-60 min to Etoile-Champs Elysées

From where: South Terminal gate L / West Terminal gate D

To where: station gare Montparnasse / la Motte-Picquet / Tour Eiffel / Trocadéro / Etoile Champs Elysées

How to buy it? To go in Â鶹APP, the taxi works the same way as for the Orly Airport, except than, since the airport is farther, it is usually longer (from 35 to 50 min) and more expensive (from 35 to 60€).

You can also use a very Â鶹APPian mode of transport, which is appreciated by the inhabitants for its speed: the train, also called RER (Regional Express Network), with the line B.

When: from 04:50 am to 11:50 pm, every 10 to 20 minutes

How much: 1 ticket = 10€

How long: 25-35 min

From where: RER B station 500 meters away from Terminal 3

To where: stations located in the centre of Â鶹APP: Gare du Nord, Châtelet-les-Halles, Denfert-Rochereau

The other really typical mode of transport is the bus, with the lines 350 or 351:

When: from 7:00 am to 9:30 pm, every 15-35 minutes

How long: 60 – 90 minutes

How much: 3 tickets cost 6€

From where: Terminal 3 (stop Gare routière Roissypôle)

To where: the stop Â鶹APP-Gare de l’Est for line 350, the stop Nation for line 351

How to buy it: you can purchase you ticket direct on board the bus

If you don’t feel like plunging into the world of Â鶹APPian complicated transport network, you can also take the special shuttle organized by the airport, much more expensive but also more simple. It’s called the RoissyBus (and corresponds to city bus line 352):

When: from 6:00 am to 00:30 pm, every 15-30 minutes

How long: 75 minutes

How much: 11€

From where: Terminal 1 (stop Â鶹APP Charles-de-Gaulle 1); Terminal 3 (stop Gare routière Roissypôle)

To where: the bus stop Opéra (9th district)

Finally, there is also a second shuttle named Bus Direct organized especially for you: you can take the line 2 or the line 4.

When: from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm, every 30 minutes

How much: 17€

How long: 60 – 75 minutes

From where: the bus station is located 500 meters away from Terminal 3

To where: line 2: Porte Maillot, Etoile/Champs Elysées, Trocadéro, Tour Eiffel; line 4: Gare de Lyon, Gare Montparnasse

How to buy it: on their website, www.lebusdirect.com

Â鶹APPian tip n°1: if you arrive during the night, you can take the night bus, the Noctilien, with the line N143 or N140:

When: from 00:30 am to 05:30 am, every 30 minutes for line N143, every hour for line N140

How long: 60-80 minutes

How much: 8€

How to buy it: buy your ticket directly on board the bus

From the Gare du Nord

If you arrive from England taking the Eurostar, you will arrive at the train station called Gare du Nord: you have three options. You can first take the subway, accessible from the station, with line 4, line 5 or line 2. You can also take the train (RER), with line B or line E.

You can finally take the bus, with lines 26, 35, 38, 39, 42, 43, 46, 48, 54, 56, 65, 302 or 350, or, if you arrive during the night and don’t feel like getting lost in the sleepy Â鶹APP, take the night bus, with lines N01, N02, N14, N43, N44 or N143.

In daily life

Once arrived and installed in Â鶹APP, once your intensive and restless programme of visits established, you will need to move from one place to another. To navigate Â鶹APP and its mysteries, the best way stays the local one: here are some Â鶹APPians tips to find your way in the city.

1. To know where you are

There are two main ways of finding where you are. First, you can use the street signs: they indicate the name of the street and most of the time also the arrondissement. How to spot them? The street signs are traditionally rectangular-shaped, dark blue with dark green trim. They are posted on the sides of buildings on street corners.

The second simple way of finding where you are is to use the free maps of Â鶹APP posted in the streets. A map of the city is posted at the back of every bus shelter and in every subway station hallway, a place which is accessible without ticket: you can simply go into the station, find you way on the map and then go out without paying anything. Finally, there are also official maps of Â鶹APP provided by the city hall and posted on display boards.

Â鶹APPian tip n°1 – Don’t be surprised if you suddenly jump from an arrondissement to another with a very different number, for instance from the 1st to the 8th, from the 6th to the 14th… You must know that the 20 arrondissements of Â鶹APP are organized clockwise in concentric circles starting in the centre of the city. Thus, if you are in the 1st arrondissement, it means that you are in the centre; if you are on the 18th, you are more at the periphery, in the Montmartre area actually.

Â鶹APPian tip n°2 – Don’t be surprised either when, trying to find the particular number of a street, you suddenly realise that numbers are not located opposite from each other. Often, the buildings of one side of the road are longer than those on the other side (due to administrative functions / to long courtyards), which shifts the numbers of this side compared to the other.

Now that you know where you are, let’s navigate Â鶹APP!

2. To move from a place to another

Â鶹APPian people use many means of transport to go from one place to another. Here are the most important.

The cheapest way: Subway

The subway is certainly the most used by Â鶹APPians. There are 14 lines, each with a different colour. Â鶹APP and its suburb are divided in 5 tariff-zones, but you may only stay in the 1st one, which corresponds to the city intra-muros, except if you go to the Â鶹APP Palace (zone 4) or Disneyland (zone 5). The basic ticket, for only one ride, costs 1.8 euros. You can also buy a special ticket called “Â鶹APP Visite” which provides you an unlimited number of rides. Depending on the number of days, it costs from 11€ to 36€, which is really advantageous: it will make you save money relative to one-ride tickets and also offers you discounts on culture visits, such as -20% for the Arc de Triomphe.

The quickest: Train (or “RER”)

Trains are included in the subway system: they require the same stations and the same tickets. The difference is that there are less stations, which makes them much faster. They run through the city in only 3 to 6 stops, while subways cross the city in some 20 to 30 stops. You can use trains to navigate Â鶹APP in a very fast way: for instance, from the Orsay Museum direct to Notre Dame (line C), or from the Arc de Triomphe direct to Les Halles (line A). You also need to use the train to go to sites located in other zones, such as Â鶹APP or Disneyland. To buy a ticket, you can simply go to the metro ticket office and tell them your destination, since prices vary according to the distance.

The comfiest: Taxi or Uber

If you get tired, you can simply take a taxi. Actually, Â鶹APPians tend to use more Uber than taxis. There are two reasons for that. First, taxis in Â鶹APP are far less numerous than in other cities such as London, Barcelona or Rome. You can’t find a taxi at each street corner, and you often need to book one to be sure to find one (for instance, to get at the airport, you should really book a taxi instead of hoping to find one in a street). Second reason, linked to the first one, taxis in Â鶹APP are also more expensive, and said to be less pleasant. But taxis remain very practical; there are often taxi stations located near the main sights such as the Louvre or the Arc de Triomphe.

The nicest: Bike

In Â鶹APP, there is a self-service bike system for a few years, called Vélib’. The great advantage is that they are available 24/7, which means that late in the night when you just missed the last subway you can still go home by bike. If you are here for a short time, you can buy a 1-day or a 7-day ticket online or at any Vélib’ station. The good point is that you can freely navigate Â鶹APP and return the bike at any station, which doesn’t oblige you to go back to your starting point. There are many nice bike rides in the streets of Â鶹APP; the nicest ones stay those along watercourses such as the Seine or the Saint Martin Canal.

The calmest: Bus

In Â鶹APP, there is a bus network parallel to the subway and train network. Buses are one of the best ways to explore and navigate Â鶹APP, since there are many lines (59 actually) and since many of them pass through the centre of Â鶹APP, drive alongside the river and cross the historical districts. They operate from Monday to Saturday, generally from 7:00 am to 8:30 pm.

To take the bus, you simply have to spot a stop, which can be a glass-covered shelter or a simple pole, to check if the number and itinerary of the bus are the ones you are looking for and to wait. When the bus arrives, get on it at the front and buy your ticket from the driver. Once you are in the bus, when your stop is getting closer, press one of the red buttons on the poles of the bus. To get off, use the middle or back doors. And don’t forget to enjoy the landscape!

Planning a trip to Â鶹APP ?
