The 25th of April is the day the word “Freedom<\/i>” found its true meaning. On the 25th of April of the year 1974, early in the morning, Armed Forces soldiers took hold of the radio station. They explained the population they wanted Portugal to be a democracy again, a free country with its elections. They played on air songs dictatorship censored.<\/p>\n

During that day, the population joined the soldiers and a real revolution started. At a certain moment, a florist started distributing carnations to the people. Soldiers put it on the barrel of their guns, and the civilians on their chest. That is why the 25th of April is also called the \u201cRevolu\u00e7\u00e3o dos Cravos\u201d<\/a> (Carnations Revolution<\/i>, in English). It was a peaceful revolution where carnations took the place of bullets. It became the symbol of the revolution for Portugal.<\/p>\n

The colonial war was over, the civilians got their social and legal rights. Dictatorship fell and a new beginning for Portugal started.<\/p>\n

I guess you can see how much this day means to Portuguese people<\/a>. A huge parade takes place, every year on the 25th of April, since that historic day. It starts at the Pra\u00e7a Marqu\u00eas de Pombal<\/b><\/i> and ends at the Pra\u00e7a dos Restauradores<\/b><\/i>. Another thing to do in Lisbon<\/a> in April is something you might have heard of is the Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery<\/strong><\/i>. It is definitely a must-see place.<\/p>\n

It was built by the King D. Manuel I, with the gold collected from the Discoveries. It is an amazing monument. Constructed in a unique architectural style only found in Portugal, the Manueline style. The monastery was given to the monks of the Order of Saint Jerome, from whom it got its name.<\/p>\n

In the church of Saint Mary, you will find the tomb of Vasco Da Gama<\/a>. He was the most famous Portuguese sailor who discovered the sea route from Lisbon to India. <\/p>\n

The Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery<\/strong><\/i><\/a> illustrates the power and knowledge of Portuguese. The remains of important Portuguese figures have been transported to the monastery. You can also find the remains of Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es, the poet who immortalized the Age of Discoveries in its poem Os Lus\u00edadas<\/i>.<\/p>\n
