The latter was destroyed during the 1789 French <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris-of-the-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>revolution<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the center of the plaza is occupied by a bronze column, the column of July, which commemorates the French <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/paris-of-the-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>revolution<\/b><\/a> of 1830. Bastille is often a place for rallies and demonstrations in Â鶹APP. What are the things to do near Bastille?<\/p>\n<h3>Spend an evening in the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-the-opera-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Opera<\/b><\/a> Bastille\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/opera_bastille.jpg\" alt=\"Things to do near Bastille in Â鶹APP\" width=\"650\"><\/p>\n<p>One of the things to do near Bastille is of course going to the Bastille <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-the-opera-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>opera<\/b><\/a> house. It was built in 1989, at the spot of the former Bastille station. Along with the older Opera Garnier, it is the main facility of Â鶹APP\u2019 main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-the-opera-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>opera<\/b><\/a> company. The Bastille <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-the-opera-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>opera<\/b><\/a> features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/things-to-do-near-the-opera-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>opera<\/b><\/a> performances of course, but also concerts and ballet performances.<\/p>\n<h3>Stroll through the \u2018Marais\u2019 neighborhood and don\u2019t miss \u2018Place des Vosges\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/des_Vosges.jpg\" alt=\"des_Vosges\" width=\"650\"><\/p>\n<p>One of the very good things to do near Bastille is walking through the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/paris-walking-tours\/trendy-marais-tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>marais<\/b><\/a>\u2019 neighborhood and its small authentic streets.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss the Place des Vosges, one of the two oldest squares in Â鶹APP. It is my personal favorite square in Â鶹APP, as it has a homogeneous architectural style, with houses in brick and stone, typical of the early XVIIth century. The park in the center of the square is particularly nice in summer, with its four fountains at each corner.<\/p>\n<h3>Go to the arsenal Harbor<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/arsenal_harbour.jpg\" alt=\"arsenal_harbour\" width=\"650\"><\/p>\n<p>Strolling on the banks of the arsenal harbor (\u2018Port de l\u2019arsenal\u2019), a former trade harbor, is one of the things to do near Bastille if you are tired of visiting monuments.<\/p>\n<p>This harbor linked the river Seine with the Saint-Martin canal. The Seine used to be widely used for freight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/transport-in-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>transport<\/b><\/a>, and the goods arriving in Â鶹APP to be sold at the former \u2018Les Halles\u2019 market (today moved to the suburbs of Rungis) transited through the arsenal harbor.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1983, goods coming into Â鶹APP arrive more often by road, and the arsenal harbor has been turned into a marina. I always find it very relaxing to stroll along the banks, under the shade of the trees, looking at the boats and the water. It is a good way of taking a break from the hassle and bustle of the city.<\/p>\n<h3>Head to the island \u2018Ile Saint-Louis\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ile_st_louis.jpg\" alt=\"ile_st_louis\" width=\"650\"><\/p>\n<p>One of the things to do near Bastille is heading for then nearby Ile-Saint-Louis. It is the only natural island in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/tour\/city\/paris-walking-tours\/\">Â鶹APP <\/a>along with the nearby Ile-de-la-Cit\u00e9. The island has been inhabited since the Middle-Ages. Today, it has almost only residential houses, dating mostly from the XVIIIth century.<\/p>\n<p>A spot I really like on this island is the ice-cream shop Berthillon which probably has the best ice-cream in Â鶹APP! They have a wide range of flavors, including Capuccino, foie-grand, or grand marnier! The shop is located at the center of the island. Other caf\u00e9s around the island sell ice-creams coming from this shop but be careful, they have a smaller range of flavors.<\/p>\n<h3>Have lunch or dinner at \u2018Le Train Bleu\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/le_train_bleu.jpg\" alt=\"le_train_bleu\" width=\"650\"><\/p>\n<p>Even though it is located inside the \u2018Gare de Lyon\u2019 station, the \u2018Train bleu\u2019 restaurant is definitely one of the things to do near Bastille. Opened in 1900 at the same time than the statin, in is located in a very luxurious setting: the walls have golden decorations and the ceiling is painted with landscapes showing the different destinations one can reach from the station.<\/p>\n<p>In the 190s, only rich people could afford taking the train! The food is of very good quality but of course, it is a little expensive.
